Prologue
"Shepard! Shepard!"
I groaned in pain. It took a while for my ringing ears to make sense of the voice screaming. My eyes opened to see a clearly distressed Liara. I felt her rigorously shaking my body.
I'm okay, Liara. I wanted to say, but for some reason my mouth didn't say those words. Instead, noise as if someone was voice testing a microphone escaped my lips.
"Shepard, thank the Goddess that you are alive."
To my horror, my mouth refused to listen again.
"Asari, I am sorry to inform you that this 'Shepard' is gone. I am temporarily using this body to communicate with you."
"Shepard you must be joking with me right?" asked at first shocked then amused Liara.
"I'm sorry, asari, but I am not the person you're looking for."
"The joke is getting really old now, Shepard." Liara's smiled awkwardly.
"I do not want to cause you distress, but this Shepard you keep calling for has died. I am merely possessing this body so that we can communicate."
Hey! Who are you calling dead?! I am right here. I wanted to scream but my body, much less my mouth was not under my control.
"Please accept that She-" My mouth stopped moving as if something shocking had stunned the thing currently controlling my body. "How is this possible!? A Protector in this day and age!"
"Protector? What are you getting at now, Shepard," questioned a very confused Liara.
"Liara, I don't know what is going on, but I am alive..." My mouth finally spoke out and I paused in confusion. I blinked at stared at a stunned Liara and smiled. "Great, I can speak again!" I screamed happily as I embraced Liara.
The confused asari stared at me in confusion, but it was not long before she smiled and hugged me back. "So you finally thought the joke went for long enough."
"Liara, I was never joking." I whispered back. "Someone one was controlling my bod–"
Suddenly, there was a loud banging from nearby. Instinctively, I turned around in direction where the loud banging was coming from. My face suddenly turned pale when I noticed what was causing the banging.
I quickly had flashback of what had happened not to long ago, and I looked down with creeping fear. To my horror, I found that I hadn't been imagining things. Several holes riddled my torso and I recalled vividly the pain of having my heart and lungs….
"Shepard!" screamed Liara as she caught my falling body. "Are you okay?"
"I should be dead…" I replied in horrified tone while recalling with great clarity of feeling the pain of clearly fatal injuries before blackening out.
"Don't say such dreadful things, Shepard." Liara quickly chided. "You are clearly alive! See," she kissed my forehead. "If you're dead then you wouldn't feel that."
My eyes brightened while cherishing the sensation of Liara kissing my forehead.
"Did you use an Emergency Stabilizer?" I called out hopefully.
"I haven't, but now that you said mentioned it…" Liara quickly rummaged through her multiple pouches lining her belt. "I should place it on you."
I looked in a mix of horror and relief as Liara attached what could arguable be one of the greatest inventions around my neck. The Emergency Stabilizer acted immediately and I could feel life-saving Mana stream from it into my brain, ensuring that even if my vital organs were unable to function that my brain would survive for several hours until the stored Mana was depleted. A time long enough for me to reach medical facility for proper treatment.
With the possibility of death pushed back for several hours, I took a good look at the origin of the banging. My mind recalled what had happened before I had taken a burst of gunfire into the chest after my energy shield had failed and my armor had been breached.
"Are you the one that took control over my body?" I asked at the Rachni Queen banging its front legs on the semi-transparent barrier separating it from me.
The Rachni Queen looked at me, and I somehow seemed to have gained the ability to understand its body language when before I would have never been able to recognize it. It continued to stare at me in dumbfounded manner, at least the Rachni equivalent.
I felt a mental probe and this time I didn't defend like I had done before I had been shot in the chest and nearly died. The alien mind soon entered my mind as my mental defenses allowed it in.
"You're not an Asari." The Rachni Queen's words echoed in my mind.
I frowned in confusion. "What do you mean by that? I am clearly an Asari."
"Do Asari have memories of the Reaper War?"
My first instinct was to claim that the Rachni Queen was wrong. There was no way I had memories of the mythical Reaper War that the Cult of Humanity taught had once taken place thousands of years. Only the most devoted human worshippers were graced with a glimpse of that era…
Or at least that was what I was going to say until I clutched my head in pain as felt decades of memories that eerily matched many of Cult of Humanity's religious texts.
"What did you do to me?"
"I didn't do anything. Those memories are yours from your previous life."
"Previous life?" I repeated incredulously. "Are you saying that I was once a human?!"
Codex Entry:
Emergency Stabilizer
Emergency Stabilizer are life-saving tools used as first aid to prevent the death. It does so by attaching to the patient's body, ideally the neck, and injecting Mana that sustains the patient's brain to prevent cell damage and cell death. This life-saving device was one of many profound inventions created by reverse-engineering human artefacts.
Reaper War
The Reaper War has many different names differing between Window Species' myths and legends of humanity. Regardless of which name or version of the story, all races collectively agree that the extinct humanity fought a galactic-spanning war that left countless planets in ruins and space graveyards filled with floating wreckages. This enemy of humanity being described as Reapers of life that was hellbent in harvesting all life that had been destroyed, but with the terrible price of humanity going extinct.
Cult of Humanity
The Cult of Humanity is the name of describing the loose coalition of several different religions that all worship humans. There were once many different mortal enemies that fueled wars dividing a species to interspecies conflicts. Over the centuries, many of the differing religions worshipping humanity has become centralized under the Cult of Humanity, but it still common for differing interpretations and ways of the worshiping humanity to cause religious conflict, but thankfully the days of millions dying to determine whose view on humanity has become a thing of the past.
Without spoiling too much. This Chapter is basically the Mass Effect 1 scene involving the Rachni Queen on Noveria. More on the difference due to my alteration of canon to create this AU will come later.
