Dragon Rising
Rygar, the Dovahkiin, had only a few months reprieve after he defeated Alduin to relax. Perhaps relaxing was a stretch but it was as close as he could come while Dragons still roamed the land. General Tullius had put a decisive end to the civil war not even a week after Alduin's defeat, killing Ulfric Stormcloak, his generals, and scattering his men to the winds. That had been a brilliant military move on Tullius's part, he had used the temporary truce to his advantage. Gaining more men and training the others so that they were real fighters unlike Ulfric's band of misfits. Rygar had to admit that for someone just using random farmers and merchants as his military might, Tullis had done a fantastic job. Now that the civil war was settled things at the Cyrodiil border had grown more volatile. The empire had used its time since the great war wisely, amassing a military might that could subdue the Elven threat. Titus Mede II had planned ahead for the eventuality of a second great war, even personally training a new emperor before his untimely demise at the behest of the Dark Brotherhood. The Thalmor assumed that the new emperor would be a weakness for the empire, but they found that the Heir to the throne, taking the mantle of Titus Mede III, was far stronger than his predecessor. No one knew where the man came from, but he was exceptionally skilled on both the battlefield and in the political sphere. He made quick work of finding who was responsible for Titus Mede II's death, publicly executing Amaund Motierre and removing the once noble family from the Elder Council entirely. After taking care of any other treasonous members of the Elder Council, Titus Mede III then turned his sights to the war ahead.
Rygar was currently walking into Solitude having been summoned by General Tullius. He hadn't been back to Solitude since the civil wars conclusion as his services had not been required. Despite being a legate, he was more valuable in the field as a symbol of the empire's control over the land. * I wonder what Tullius needs me for? Perhaps we will be dealing with the Thalmor? Or I he is planning to raise more troops for the next war with them? * It didn't take long for him to arrive at Castle Dour, upon entering the voice of Legate Rikke arguing with him once more. * I swear she doesn't have any other way of speaking to him *
"General with all due respect I don't believe this scheme will work."
"Oh? I don't recall asking your opinion legate. I told you what we are going to do."
"But sir!"
"That's an order legate!"
"Yes sir…" Rikke turned and walked out of the door, not before glancing to the dragonborn with a weary expression. He gave her a soft smile in return before turning his attention back to General Tullius.
"You summoned me, sir?" Tullius looked him over before nodding.
"Indeed, I did legate. We have much to discuss." He motioned for the Rygar to follow him into his office. Rygar waited patiently to hear why he was needed once more. "I'm sure you've heard the rumors from the border by now."
"The ones about Aldmeri soldiers testing for weakness?" Rygar asked, hoping those were the rumors being spoken of. General Tullius nodded,
"Yes, those rumors. I will be frank; they are true. That is exactly what is happening at the border right now. They are testing to see how the new emperor responds. So far, we have held strong despite the civil war diversion the Thalmor attempted." Rygar nodded his understanding. "I summoned you for a very specific reason, I need you to give the Thalmor a scare."
"A scare?"
"Yes, I need them to report back home that attacking the empire while you are serving is a bad idea."
"Did you have something specific in mind? Or am I to just attack the embassy unprovoked?" Tullius raised a brow at this inquiry.
"It won't need to be an unprovoked attack. We've caught wind of a Thalmor coup to remove several clans in High Rock from the council. I would like you to journey there with a regiment to ensure this coup fails. Make a large display of it, I want the Thalmor soldiers running away in fear of the empires might for breaching the Concordat." Rygar smiled to General Tullius,
"Sounds like fun, do we have a location?"
"They will be heading through the Jackdaw Cove area staying on the southern road passing through the Viridian Woods on their way to Evermore." Rygar nodded, he would look the location up on one of the imperial maps before heading out. "Any other instructions?" General Tullius pulled out a scroll.
"Before you kill their leaders or scare them make sure to read this to them. If Elenwen is present, then make sure she survives. I know she can tell those in summerset what happened quickly. We want Alinor to know our power." Rygar took the scroll placing it in his satchel he nodded once more.
"Understood, I will be sure to send a clear message. Is the new emperor planning for a second war?"
"I cannot say for sure Legate Rygar but I'm sure he is taking precautions for one as we speak. Right now, we need the Aldmeri dominion to hesitate. We are nearly ready for a full-scale war to end the Thalmor tyranny, but we need just a bit more time. I am hoping this display will be enough."
"I will make it the best display of strength possible then. I will send the message that the dragon will never fall."
"Very good, I will leave it to you to make the arrangements necessary. Take the 6th and 8th regiments with you."
"Yes sir!" Rygar saluted then took his leave. He heard Tullius call,
"Divines be with you Legate." Rygar waved a thanks to his General then walked out the door. Walking to the barracks he located the Commanders for the 6th and 8th regiments. Once he had spoken to both of them, they went to one of the many map tables and began to plan their route and ambush location.
The sun was beginning to set by the time Rygar left Solitude. As he made his way home, he took inventory of everything that needed to be dealt with before he left on this mission. The planning phase had gone well, and they would have an advantage using the topography of the area for their ambush. * He said he wanted it to be a big display of strength… I think I know just the thing to send those elves whimpering back to their ruler. Assuming everything goes well for us weather wise. Hard to do a large display if it's obscured by the fog or rain after all. * It didn't take him long to reach his manor near Morthal. He after all had many residences around the whole of Skyrim. He could have stayed in Solitude but decided against it as he disliked the bustling city noises first thing in the morning. He would be ready to depart in two days' time as agreed upon with his Commanders. In the meantime, he planned to craft a new set of armor and gear and make sure his financial investments were well taken care of along with his two charges who resided elsewhere.
As the dragonborn reentered Solitude, wearing his newly crafted dragon bone and scale Imperial armor, he couldn't help but notice a growing presence of merchants in town. After making note of this he headed back to Castle Dour to pick up his regiments. He found them waiting for him when he arrived with General Tullius speaking with the two Commanders. He saluted, receiving a nod from Tullius, he waited to be spoken to.
"It's time Legate Rygar. Are you prepared for what is ahead of you?"
"I am sir."
"Good, then I wish you all a safe and successful journey." Tullius looked over the dragonborn's armor then commented, "After your return I would like you to explain how you created that armor you are wearing." Rygar smiled,
"See something you like General?"
"Indeed, I do. I hope you won't mind sharing the technique."
"If all goes well, I will craft you a set myself." The General nodded his approval.
"Then I look forward to your victorious return. Dismissed." Saluting once more he signaled to his men to move out. The Commanders fell in line just behind him leading the two regiments out of the city. It would be a long journey ahead of them but well worth it to strike some fear into the treacherous Thalmor.
After about an hour's time, Commander Huldrek Gray-Drums of the 8th regiment decided to make conversation with their legate. She had worked with the dragonborn before and knew he was never opposed to engaging in conversation as long as their focus was still on their job when the time came.
"Legate Rygar, did you make that armor just for this mission?" He glanced her way as did Commander Salvor Horsoman who was still getting a feel for their leader. Rygar smiled over at her,
"Yes, I was told to be as flashy as possible while sending this message to the Thalmor. I figured that meant I should stand out a bit for the display alone. After all we want the Thalmor to realize who I am and what it means if they attack the empire." Huldrek grinned at this,
"Well, I don't think there is another set like it in the whole of Tamriel."
"Unless another can kill dragons and craft their hide and bones into armor, I highly doubt there is, especially with the Imperial insignia on it. Though perhaps a dragonborn emperor had one crafted for him." This seemed to make his companion pause a moment shaking her head.
"I don't recall one being mentioned in any of the archives."
"Not everything is recorded in the archives." Salvor finally pipped up. Rygar nodded to him with a smile,
"That is true. Regardless, it was made for this endeavor as a way of flaunting the empires strength." Salvor was aware of their leader's status as a dragonborn though he knew very little about what that entailed. Instead, he probed about the armor a little more, as he was a merchant's son and knew much about arms and amors.
"So what weight is this armor?"
"It would be considered medium armor. I normally wear heavy armor but for this I thought it best to lower the weight a little given the marching distance."
"Are you a smith?"
"I am a little of everything honestly. I can smith yes, I do own Felhammer Forge; it would be odd if I didn't know how to make armor and weapons." He chuckled a little as he saw the man's eyes widen. They were silent for a short time as they watched for any danger along the road. Rygar could hear the troops chatting quietly behind them.
"So have you gotten any big orders lately?" Huldrek asked while watching their surroundings, they were taking a path that would keep them out the embassy's line of sight, it was a little bit longer but the less the Thalmor knew the better.
"A few, nothing like those orders a few months back though. I think this area has settled down now that the civil war has been settled."
"Makes sense… we haven't received a lot of new recruits."
"Does the empire buy from your forge?" Salvor inquired,
"Upon occasion yes when the forge in solitude can't fulfil orders. It's usually my employees doing all the work though as I haven't had time recently to do the orders myself."
"Oh? Tullius still got you running to the different holds?" She seemed amused by such an idea.
"Not him no. Elisif had me doing a few things for her. I also have the College for Winter hold to take care of."
"How did you end up with that college anyway? I have never seen you use any magic." Rygar chuckled shaking his head,
"I was convenient at the time that the old administration was killed. I get the impression that none of the other instructors wanted to lead the thing, so they named me the Arch-Mage. I do use magic Huldrek, just not very often." He shrugged as Salvor seemed to have a slew of new questions pop into his head. Only one of which he actually spoke aloud,
"What magic can you use?" Rygar smiled as he saw this new Commander relaxing into the conversation between them,
"I mainly focused on destruction magic, but I can use a little of every school. Restoration being my second strongest school of magic. All of it is useful under specific circumstances even if I usually don't need it." Rygar chuckled at the look on his companion's face, he knew she wasn't very thrilled about magic like most nords. He continued to chat with them as we marched along, knowing it would help pass the time.
After a few days they reached the mountains that acted as the border between Skyrim and Highrock. Rygar and his Commanders agreed to let their troops rest before attempting the arduous climb through the mountains. Rygar lead them to a path that would be out of view of watchers but safe for traversal. Knowing how these mountains were, he kept a modest pace, making sure they cleared them in two days' time. Once on the other side he let his men rest before they continued to the jackdaw cove area. He led the bulk of his regiments south, sending a small contingency led by a captain north to the area near the bridge leading out of the jackdaw coast. There they would remain out of sight unless the Thalmor traveled that way. Once they were by the Troll's Toothpick, he instructed Salvor to head over with half his regiment to Fang's Lair. They were to stay out of sight until the horn blew then show themselves on top of the hills of the raising area. Most of his team would be arches giving them a tactical advantage by having the high ground. This would also pin the Thalmor to the Halcyon Lake coast, giving them only one way to travel once the trap was sprung. Huldrek and the remaining troops remained with himself to act as blockade going forward. For now, they would wait for their quarry to show up. According to the intel he had received they were at least three days ahead of the Thalmor.
When the lookout finally spotted the Thalmor, Rygar was more than ready for them, his people had plenty of time to regain their strength while the Thalmor looked worse for wear. He found it unusual that they did not stop to rest despite many of their ranks looking exhausted. * Poor leadership I suppose. * He waited until they were nearly on top of his position before he sprung the trap, he and his commander stepped out with part of the 8th regiment, the rest were one top of the hills. One of the tribunes blowing the horn which caused the archery half of the 6th regiment to appear on the hill tops surrounding the Thalmor. Rygar immediately recognized the third emissary, Rulindil, deciding that he would be the one to survive this no matter what. The Dovahkiin had told his commanders that the first person that he pointed at would be off limits, this would be who would survive this encounter. Luckily his commanders also recognized the man and understood his intention when he pointed at him.
"Rulindil, third emissary of the Thalmor I am here with a message from Emperor Titus Mede the third." Rygar's voice boomed over the landscape making all of the Thalmor soldiers nervous. Rulindil to his credit remained calm despite this surprise ambush.
"Oh? By all means deliver your message then. Though I should hope you sent this to our first emissary as well."
"You need not worry about that third emissary." The dragonborn smiled, he had seen the look of recognition pass through Rulindil's eyes after seeing him. * Good he recognized me, just like I wanted him to. * He unrolled the scroll given to him by Tullius,
"It has come to my attention that the terms of the White-Gold Concordat have been breached by the Thalmor. The specific terms breached were the non-aggression and non-interference terms laid out in Section 4 of the Governance Clause stating that the Thalmor would not cause any disruption within imperial or local governance directly, they would report any issues or administrators within the government to local Imperial Officers before seeking to correct said issues. No such notice of administration violations have been reported within Highrock, as such this Thalmor escapade shall be seen as a coup to overthrow the local governance of Highrock, a clear violation of the non-aggression and non-interference clause.
I, Titus Mede the third, shall not stand for such blatant disregard of the White-Gold Concordat. I have instructed my Generals to send a stern warning to your superiors and to remove the offending Thalmor force from Highrock by any means necessary. No further violations will be tolerated by the Empire." As the dragonborn finished reading he could see the surprise in the Thalmor's eyes. * So, they didn't realize we knew what they were up to huh? Interesting. Always good to get the jump on the enemy. * He locked eyes with Rulindil, "I will give you one chance to leave peacefully." It took a moment for the elf to respond but Rygar already knew what he would say.
"As pretty as the speech was, we have every right to be here. You would not dare to remove us by force."
"Are you so certain emissary? Perhaps you should reassess your situation. You are vastly outnumbered, your forces are exhausted due to your lack of foresight, and you know as well as I that your plot has been discovered. The disadvantage is yours not mine." He could see the elf's jaw clench as he did rethink his current situation, but he did not back down. The Dovahkiin chuckled, "Perhaps you need a bit more persuasion then." Rygar raised his hand, all of the archers set arrows and drew back waiting for the signal to loose their arrows.
"You are making a mistake!"
"Oh, there is no mistake emissary."
"The empire will fall in the second war!"
"No, the dragon will never fall. Not while I am here." His eyes drove his words home as he stared the elven ambassador down. He signaled part of the archers to loose a few warning shots at the Thalmor. Several agents and soldiers backed up as a result, realizing that they were indeed outnumbered and out maneuvered. When he knew the man would not call his people to leave, he unleashed a mighty shout. "Mid Vur Shaan!" The weapons of the closest allies glowed with his power, dropping his hand his archers fired. They had been instructed to kill some lesser ranking members only. He wanted witnesses to survive after all. After only a moment he shouted once more, "Mul Qah Diiv!" His body glowing with the look of a dragon as he led the charge against the Thalmor leadership. As he predicted the Thalmor ranks buckled immediately, using this to his advantage he targeted Rulindil and a few of his officers blowing them back with another shout, "Fus Ro Dah!" This would certainly hurt but not kill them, it would also get them pushed to the side where they would no longer be targeted by the rest of the regiment.
"Taste real power!" Rulindil shot lightning at the dragonborn, Rygar however barely felt it as he moved forward punching the elf in the gut. Said elf backed up coughing, as the dragonborn smirked down at him.
"You do not know nor understand true power." Rulindil then laughed at him before summoning as storm atronach.
"We shall see about that!" Rolling his eyes, Rygar decided he had enough of this nonsense, "Yul Toor Shul!" his fiery breath sounded even more dragon like than normal with dragon aspect still active. Rulindil's eyes widened and the atronach faded from existence only a moment after being summoned.
"This is not over!"
"It very much is for you." Seeing a bunch of atronachs on the field he decided that he would prevent any casualties on his side and give the elves an even greater scare. * I hope he remembers not to kill everyone. * "Od Ah Viing!" After his voice boomed through the air, a dragon's roar was heard. Soon the red dragon descended spewing fire on the atronachs and the elves who summoned them. It only took a few passes for the mighty dragon to deal with all the remaining Thalmor forces. Rulindil's façade was broken after seeing the legendary red dragon under this man's command. He knew what this meant for his people and resolved to survive this encounter to warn his people of the danger. The dragonborn had spoken to his red friend before this, asking for his assistance in scaring the elves. Odahviing hadn't seemed thrilled at first but decided that picking on the weak arrogant magic users would be amusing after everything was explained. Rulindil made a break for it with a few of his high-ranking men, Odahviing gave chase, shooting fire at them; barely missing them on purpose. After they had fled into the mountains, he circled above them for a little while before he returned to the dragonborn. His soldiers looked uncertain of the dragon but didn't fire as they realized the dragon was under their leader's control.
"Dovahkiin, Lost Dii Nos Ol Hi Laan?" (Dragonborn, was my attack as you wanted?) The mighty dragon hovered above, Rygar nodded responding.
"Hin Nos Lost Lot Wuth Fahdon." (Your attack was great, old friend.) The dragon chuckled,
"Your dovahzul is getting better Dovahkiin."
"I am glad to be able to speak it. Thank you for your help."
"I am honored to be of service. Perhaps next time it shall not be for display that you summon me?"
"I guarantee that it shall not be." With a nod the red dragon took off into the skies once more.
After a few moments Huldrek came to his side shaking her head.
"If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, would not have believed it. So, the stories are true, the red dragon does exist?"
"They are true yes; he is the very same red dragon who aided Tiber Septim."
"He obeys you?"
"He will do what I ask most of the time. He is still a dragon, so there are times he and I argue. If I can't win our argument, then he will just do his own thing. He has agreed to ally with me, that doesn't make him mine."
"Still a powerful ally…."
"Indeed, he is." Salvor interjected now, his troops had started marching as soon as their Legate had ordered an attack.
"Didn't you just tip our hand though?" Rygar shook his head,
"No, I have more allies than just the red dragon." This made the man shake his head in disbelief.
"The stories I shall have to tell after this trip." Rygar chuckled before he signaled the group to form up.
"Let's get back to camp then head back to Skyrim in the morning."
"You think Elenwen will flip her lid over this?"
"Oh, she will defiantly be yelling at Tullius by the time we return, I guarantee it. However, I also believe the high ups will be thinking twice about provoking the empire. I showed them the red dragon for a reason, the elves fear it. It's the very thing that Tiber Septim defeated them with, that should make them hesitate which is all we really need."
"Technically, he used the red dragon and the Numidium against them." Salvor stated as the walked back to camp.
"True, the brass god did help out during that but that matters very little right now."
"I hope you are right Legate Rygar."
"I am, we only needed them to hesitate, to buy us a little more time before we are ready to take them on fully. The red dragon will be enough to do that."
"So did Tullius know you had him as an ally?" Huldrek inquired, smirking at the dragonborn's chuckle.
"No, he's never asked about my abilities or allies, nor have I mentioned them so it will be a surprise to him as well." She burst out laughing just imagining Tullius dealing with elves babbling about a dragon. Salvor shook his head,
"Doesn't that leave our General at a disadvantage."
"Knowing him? No, he will take said information and roll with it. That's the way he is." He knew that likely the general would be annoyed by the lack of knowledge but would adapt quickly. Tullius was smart, he would use anything to his advantage.
"Won't the Thalmor attempt to assassinate you?" Salvor asked as they sat down by the fire nearest their legate's tent.
"I am sure they will try but this wouldn't be my first time dealing with assassin's" The man raised a brow at this statement, Huldrek probed further.
"Who else tried to kill you?"
"I'm not sure actually. Never found out a name, only knew the dark brotherhood was after me for a time. Apparently, the price paid didn't cover their losses after a while, they seem to have given up." Rygar shrugged, he wouldn't reveal any more about that as he wasn't inclined to speak of his involvement in the brotherhood. * Hopefully Nazir will be able to head off any other assassins before they get very far. * He had spoken to the red guard before going on this mission, keeping him aware that more than likely someone would attempt to kill him once this was done. Nazir assured him no assassin would get past the rebuild brotherhood.
"You have such an eventful life."
"Too eventful sometimes." He told his companion, before glancing around.
"Let's get these men fed and rested. I'd like to get back as soon as we can. Send a runner to pull the contingent we left to the north back to camp." The two commanders nodded one walked over to get the cooks working and instruct the soldiers to eat and go to bed the other instructed a messenger to go get their other troops.
By the time the dragonborn returned he could see there was some fallout already from their excursion. The Thalmor at the embassy stared as they walked past but didn't provoke them. He noticed one of the soldiers going inside likely to tell Elenwen of his return. He walked into Castle Dour knowing full well he was likely to get an earful about not informing his general of what his plan was to scare the elves. What he didn't expect was for Legate Rikke to be the first to yell at him.
"Shor's bones! Why would you show them the red dragon!? Have you lost your mind?" Rygar held up his hand, but she continued to berate him. "You showed our strongest weapon to the enemy!" Shaking his head, he looked over at Tullius who seemed irritated though he couldn't tell if it was by him or Rikke.
"That is enough Legate Rikke!" Tullius barked when Rikke looked like she was still going to berate the dragonborn. Finally, she was silent, the General then looked over at Rygar; his expression telling the dragonborn to explain himself.
"The red dragon is NOT my strongest ally. He is only one. I have other dragon allies. Ones that the elves have never heard of. Ones that even the empire has never seen." Tullius looked intrigued now, "You asked me to put fear into their hearts, the red dragon did just that. It was the only thing that made Rulindil falter, even facing my power full on didn't convince him to flee. Only once he saw the red dragon did he scurry away like a frightened child."
"So, she sent him, did she?"
"Yes, third emissary Rulindil was leading the small contingency of Thalmor agents and soldiers."
"He is a hard one to scare… I can see why you needed the extra assistance." He paused before speaking again, "I would have preferred you tell me your intentions of calling such an ally to your side. When Elenwen stormed in here the other day I wasn't sure what she was talking about."
"I would hope you remembered the stories about Tiber Septim."
"I did indeed, I pieced together that you likely had that same dragon as an ally."
"So, what was Elenwen barking about?" Tullius shook his head,
"She was trying to say we broke the concordat by attacking her people. When I showed her our intel about the planned coup and her own breaches of the concordat, she left fuming."
"I am sure she is still fuming. I expect her to return soon, I saw one of her soldiers report my return to the area."
"Just what I needed… another headache."
"If the report of the empire having the red dragon once more reaches Alinor I believe we have gotten what we wanted. I doubt Alinor would want to test things any further with the red dragon's involvement. They know they can't fight a dragon already."
"Let's hope you are right Legate Rygar." He paused, "I expect a full report by tomorrow."
"Yes, General Tullius." Rikke spoke up,
"What do we do now General?"
"For now, we wait. The next move is our opponents." Rikke nodded though Rygar could see she wasn't thrilled with this.
"I believe you and I need to have a conversation about your abilities and allies Legate Rygar."
"Yes sir, that would be wise."
"That can wait until after you are rested, and I have your report. I also still want to know how you made that armor."
"I will be sure to disclose how it was made, General." Just as the Dovahkiin was about to take his leave the door to Castle Dour slammed open. Elenwen stormed right up to General Tullius who tried his best to mask his annoyance.
"I believe you owe me an explanation, Tullius!"
"I do not owe you anything, Ambassador."
"Your troops have returned; I want an explanation right now!"
"I told you before, you are not owed an explanation after the coup you just tried to execute!"
"My men were slaughtered! Never given the chance to retreat! That breaches the…"
"That's enough out of you!" he cut her off. "Legate Rygar. Did you allow for a retreat?" Tullius glanced his way, Elenwen's eyes shifted to the dragonborn.
"Yes General, as instructed I read the declaration you gave me and gave the opportunity for retreat. They were given this opportunity more than once before I attempted to remove them forcefully. Rulindil refused to leave despite my pointing out that he had exhausted his contingency by not resting after the journey through the mountains. He seemed confident that we would not force them to leave, we fired warning shots first as instructed. He still refused to leave forcing us to engage them. The entire time a corridor behind them was left open for their retreat. I had told my troops to disengage if the enemy was retreating. Rulindil and his officers refused to retreat until most of their soldiers and agents were dead." Elenwen had met Rygar before; she knew who and what he was. She also knew that he wasn't lying. She had enough experience with interrogations and her own men to know when a soldier goofed up and was hiding something, Rygar was not hiding anything from his commanding officer.
"You're saying my officers are incompetent is that it?" Rygar's gaze shifted to Elenwen,
"Would a competent officer make his troops continue marching without rest after going through the Druadach Mountains?" Elenwen seemed to have no answer for that. His gaze shifted back to Tullius who nodded to him,
"It seems Ambassador that you need to have a chat with your officers. Legate Rygar you are dismissed, I expect your full report to be written and turned in by the end of tomorrow." Rygar saluted,
"Yes, sir." He then took his leave, Elenwen tended to annoy him rather quickly and he would rather leave than deal with her any further. Especially since she was likely to harp on the same things over and over as she had no other recourse due to her poor selection of officers. Rygar waved to his commanders as he left Castle Dour, he knew they would be required to report in as well. Their reports would corroborate his own, showing just how stupid the Thalmor had been. For now, he would return to his home in Morthal, after his report the following day he would travel west to stay out of the Thalmor's sights for a bit. Likely there would be assassins to deal with, but the Thalmor assassins weren't very good at their job. As long as the Morag Tong did not get involved, he knew he would be safe.
When Rygar returned to Castle Dour the following day he wasn't surprised to see a flurry of activity in the courtyard. Likely the Thalmor had caused an uproar after the prior days encounter. He waited for General Tullius to finish speaking with one of the other Legates before he approached. He presented his report to his General after a salute. Tullius read over the report then turned his gaze to the dragonborn once more.
"It sounds like you followed orders perfectly. The Thalmor have no grounds for dispute, which is exactly what we wanted."
"General with all due respect you know I would never jeopardize our mission, regardless of my own feelings on the matter."
"I am well aware of that Legate; that was exactly why I chose you for this mission, I meant no offense. Though I wasn't expecting the display of power that you brought to the table. I am glad for it make no mistake. Alinor is in an uproar but not willing to engage the empire in combat. There have been a flurry of messages and requests coming in. I just needed your report to respond to the emperor, I promised he would have a response by tomorrow. He understood that you and your commanders needed rest and granted my request. As always, your report is absolutely thorough. Leaving the lake shore corridor open for retreat was a brilliant move, it gave our side every advantage."
"I was not willing to give the Thalmor any advantage in this encounter. I wasn't expecting them to be so exhausted to be honest. I expected their leader to have them rest after passing through the mountains just as I did. It was only a slaughter due to the exhaustion of the soldiers and agents. They would have been a bit more of a problem had they been fully rested. Odahviing barely had to do anything to send the group running. One sweep with his fire breath sent even the most stubborn elf fleeing."
"Is that his name?" Tullius asked curiously, the Dovahkiin nodded an affirmation.
"Yes, he is the same dragon who helped Tiber Septim all those years ago before Alduin re-emerged from the time rift. He assisted me when Alduin fled like a coward once I had the upper hand. Calling into question the power of the first born of the dragon, which stopped the other dragons from assisting Alduin." Tullius seemed to mull this over a moment before asking,
"Why would they turn on Alduin just because he fled?" The Dovahkiin chuckled,
"Because "might makes right" in the world of dragons. The strongest one leads, nothing else matters. When I gained the upper hand, my Thu'um was proven to be stronger than Alduin's. This meant I was the mightiest, which made the others defect. Granted not all of them have come around to me but they no longer wished to serve Alduin. Now that he is gone, most of them are doing their own thing, though they all respect me." He waited for the General to think this over before asking, "So how long was Elenwen a problem yesterday?" Tullius sighed,
"Too long…" with a shake of his head he then he signaled the dragonborn to follow him. "She stayed about an hour after you left. She had no ground to stand on, but she certainly tried to make an argument regardless."
"I figured she would. I will give her credit for all the effort she puts in even when dealt a horrible hand." They entered Tullius's private office, one that Elenwen would have no way to get to. Rygar understood why they were here and was glad for the privacy to disclose what he was truly capable of.
"Yes, she is certainly zealous about her duties. It's really too bad she is working against us." He gestured for his legate to take a seat. Rygar did so as the General sat down at his desk. After he had retrieved some paper and his quill he then asked. "Now I am sure you know why you are in my private office."
"I would assume you wish to know my other allies and abilities?" He received a nod as confirmation.
"Let's start with your abilities. You know magic, correct?"
"Yes, my strongest school is destruction in which I know master level spells. Second strongest is restoration. I am still working on learning the master level spells for that school. I can use most novice and moderate spells from the remaining schools of magic." He waited until Tullius asked further.
"What about these shouts? Are they magic?"
"They are dragon magic in a sense, yes. I know a variety of shouts. Most are offensive, but I do have a couple that can be used for support. I used one on my regiments while dealing with the Thalmor to increase speed in which they could wield their weapons." This seemed to catch Tullius's attention, he glanced over at his strongest ally.
"What is the range of this shout?"
"About a twenty-five-foot radius." He could see his general thinking of all the applications for this new ability. "It has its limits, only lasting a few minutes in battle before needing to be recast."
"Even so that is a great advantage to have."
"It can be yes if used at the proper time. Most of my strongest shouts have limits making them useful only if used at the correct time." He waited for General Tullius to finish jotting down his notes, he wondered if he would need to tell him all of his shouts during this interview. Much to the Dovahkiin's relief he did not ask about any other shouts.
"What about other skills?"
"I excel with a one-handed blades, shields, dual wielding, and archery. My success rate for sneaking into locations for intel gathering is very high. It's rare that I am detected before I get what I am after."
"What about your skills in diplomacy and business?" Rygar raised a brow at this line of questioning, * What is he angling at? Something else is up. I will have to hold back some information of the time being *.
"As a business owner I have developed many connections and the skills needed to talk myself into some good dealings. If that is what you are asking?" Tullius nodded, "Diplomacy is something else entirely, I would not say that I am very successful in that field as most confrontations result in my having to kill someone. Though can sometimes bluff my way through conversations if needed." After a moment came the next question,
"You said the red dragon was not your only ally. Who else do you have as an ally?"
"Odahviing may be the first dragon to ally himself with me, but I have few other dragons who might assist me. One such dragon I met in my travels currently resides in plane of oblivion but will come to my aid should I summon him." Tullius looked up from his writing giving the dragonborn a disbelieving look.
"You're telling me you have ben to another plane of oblivion and there is a dragon in that plane that allied himself with you?"
"Yes, general. He was tricked by the Ideal Masters into serving them, they created their own plane of existence within oblivion called the Soul Cairn. They were the ones who created the black soul gems that pop up amongst necromancers."
"Did you meet these Ideal Masters?" Rygar paused a moment,
"As confusing as this answer is, yes and no. I saw the forms they chose to take but I did not speak with them. They won't speak to anyone they don't wish to make a deal with. Their physical bodies were shed long ago, they are more of an astral being now. If rumor is to be believed they were once necromancers themselves and found a way to become immortal."
"They made a plane of oblivion their own?"
"Yes, though I can't say how one goes about that."
"Would your dragon friend know?" Rygar shrugged,
"I wouldn't know. I never asked him. Considering he came to their plane of existence to learn something before he was trapped, I have my doubts that he would know much more than I about them and their abilities." After a few more moments his general looked his way again,
"Any other allies?"
"I have many allies amongst the people of Skyrim, such as the companions. I am a thane in every single hold, giving me the Jarl's ear should I have need of it in those holds."
"I had heard of your connections throughout the whole of Skyrim including your accomplishments as a thane in each hold. You currently lead the companions do you not?"
"I am their harbinger, yes. Much like the dragons, I can't order them to do anything, but I can ask. It's entirely up to them should they choose to assist me. I reserve such calls for assistance for when I have true need of them only. I won't call the companions to my side for the purposes of war without a substantial reason to do so." Tullius nodded his understanding then finished up his notes. After he finished glanced to his legate with a sigh,
"I will be passing this on to the emperor, don't worry I am sending out decoys before we send the real message out. I do not want the Thalmor catching wind of any of this. Once I finish my report it shall be sent with your full report and this new information. I will warn you that we may need you once more soon." Rygar nodded,
"I will be heading west for a bit; I need to check in with the college before I head back to my residence at Riverwood."
"You mean Draco Castle?"
"Yes, that is the main residence I stay at."
"I will send a messenger there if you are needed once more. About the armor you made, could you teach the royal smith how to forge it?"
"I could… though they would have a hard time with the materials. Dragon bones and scales aren't something most smiths can obtain or work with easily. Did you want a set for yourself General?"
"Yes, though I would prefer a special royal set be made first."
"I can do that General. Just send the specifications to my castle. I will begin work on it upon my return. I am still willing to attempt to teach this to another if they wish to learn."
"I will send someone after I know you have returned to Riverwood. If I can get any of the royal smiths to make the journey." Rygar nodded, "That is all. You are free to go Legate Rygar." With a nod he rose and walked out of his general's office, closing the door behind him.
As he made his way out of the city, he noticed Elenwen and a very worse for wear Rulindil walking towards Solitude. He ignored the pair mounting his horse, who had been patiently waiting for his return. Turning his steed to leave he could see the stern glare of the approaching elves. He chose to ignore this, urging his horse to move out as he really didn't want a confrontation with either of them at this time. Unfortunately, that was not what he ended up with much to his annoyance.
"I'm sure you think you have won, but this shall not stand!" Elenwen spat at him while getting in his horse's path.
"I do not believe you can change the outcome of the past. As such it will stand as an event that has already happened, one that you lost." Rygar knew she was baiting him, he would no stoop to her level though.
"Your pathetic empire will fall due to your actions." He snorted, shaking his head.
"Is that what Alinor said when you reported in? or is that your own boasting?" He heard her stutter slightly,
"You… you ignorant little…"
"That's what I thought. Perhaps Ambassador you should live up to your role and not cause any further international incidents to occur." His gaze met hers now, he could see the fury in her eyes. "A war is not for you nor I to decide. Only those above us can determine where this all leads. I would suggest you maintain your station and do not reach beyond it, for your own sake."
"Is that a threat I hear?" Rygar laughed at this notion shaking his head,
"Not a threat, just a little friendly advice for your career. Whether you heed it or not is entirely up to you. Good day milady." Rygar urged his horse forward again, the piebald stallion moved around the offending elf. Rygar could tell that Elenwen was once again fuming, * I feel a little sorry for General Tullius, though he should be able to at least barricade himself in his office for a while. * Rygar had no doubt that this would not be the end of things, he would likely see the first emissary far more often now that he had this direct confrontation with her people.
Once he was out of her sight he urged his steed to a faster pace, he would stop in Dawn Star for a visit with the brotherhood before heading to the college, as he had told his general he would be doing. Tullius was well aware of his connection to the college and would think nothing of the visitation. He had no doubt that the Thalmor would plant an agent there as well, likely as a spy. Luckily for him they would never gain anything from this endeavor as he stored his best information at the Dawn Star Sanctuary or the Nightingale Hall where no one would find it without knowing its location. While he galloped along the path, he had plenty of time to think about what was going on. * Elenwen likely won't let this go even if Alinor is telling her to do so. She seems the vindictive type. If she continues to cause issues though she might be removed from Skyrim, that is if Alinor truly wishes to avoid a war at this time. * He considered that a moment, * still there is something that seems off about this… why the coup in High Rock and why would the emperor want to see my full report? I assumed my report was need for Tullius to send his own in. Hmm… perhaps I should not have shown my ally after all. I didn't tip the empires hand; I tipped my own. Am I a threat to the emperor? Or is there something more to this? * He contemplated that awhile longer before slowing his steed as he approached Dawn Star. * Whatever the case, I am going to hold my remaining cards close to my chest until I know what is going on for certain. My connections to the thieves guild and dark brotherhood will remain a secret regardless. I won't allow either to be used in a war. * He deliberately stayed out of sight, moving his horse through the trees before coming of the coast on the backside of the sanctuary. His horse would remain in the woods, making his way on foot towards the door. Once he answered the doors question, he made his way inside finding Nazir talking with one of the new recruits. He left the man to his instruction, instead he made his way over to where Babette was relaxing. Smiling to her he took a moment to pour himself a drink before taking a seat.
"So did you send the elves running?" the vampire asked with a grin, returning her grin he nodded.
"They fled like children caught stealing sweet rolls." She laughed, "I made sure to kill quite a few, but unfortunately we need a few to survive to pass the message along to Alinor." She nodded taking a drink of her tea.
"I'm sure that caused an uproar. Elves never like being told they are wrong." He snorted,
"That's an understatement. Yes, there is a huge uproar. Elenwen was practically throwing a tantrum while I was reporting in with General Tullius." This caused giggle to bubble forth from the childlike vampire.
"I hope you aren't planning to involve us in any wars?" Nazir spoke while grabbing himself a drink.
"No, our involvement will only be whatever contracts this generates for us. I would never allow the Brotherhood to become someone's pawn. Not after everything that has happened." The red guard nodded as he took a seat. "New recruits coming along well?"
"Yes, they all seem to be progressing nicely. One is even ex Morag Tong, not much to teach her."
"Always nice to get someone that doesn't need much instruction. Did she say why she left the Tong?"
"According to her, she moved to Skyrim with her husband recently. Knowing the Tong can't operate here she left them, they are still on good terms from what I understand. When she found out the Brotherhood was active in the area, she sought us out, I personally went to meet her and make sure she wasn't a threat to our new family."
"I trust your judgement Nazir."
"I am glad for it, but I am still waiting for you to approve all the recruits. You are the Listener after all." Rygar chuckled,
"I suppose I am for better or for worse. I'll be sure to speak with each of them before I leave."
"Has the night mother spoken to you lately?"
"No but I will go to her chamber shortly. Sometimes she waits for me to come to her before telling me anything. Other times I hear about it halfway across Skyrim." He shrugged,
"Sound annoying." The young-looking vampire commented.
"It is indeed if I am honest. I really can't even say why I was chosen."
"Perhaps because of your loyalty." Nazir stated, causing the Dovahkiin to meet his gaze. "You are the most loyal out of all of us. Yes, all of us were a family before you came but even then, we all knew what pissing off Astrid meant. You didn't fear her though, not even after she tried to kill you. I believe that's what made her fear you the most, that she would lose to you eventually regardless of your status as Listener."
"I didn't realize how much she was breaching the rules until I read the tenants for the first time." Rygar admitted, "I could see what she was doing was wrong. I was hoping to show her how to improve but instead she believed I would kill her. Even her husband seemed to come around to me."
"She led us down a dark path, thank Sithis you came when you did."
"Ironically there was a contract on me that she failed to fulfill. Instead, she made me kill someone in a cabin then gave me the ability to join the brotherhood. I never understood her reasoning. I could have very easily turned on her after everything that happened." Nazir pondered this a moment,
"I wondered why you, one of our marks, ended up joining us. She never told us why you had been invited; she only said the person who hired us called off the hit."
"I doubt that was the case."
"I doubt it as well now that you told us what happened. Perhaps she could see that your killing prowess was too good to pass up. You did take a contract from us."
"Accidently yes. I honestly just wanted to kill the woman abusing orphans." Rygar shrugged making Babette laugh,
"Everyone wanted her dead it seems."
"She actually had four contracts on her." Rygar glanced over a Nazir,
"Really? All at once?"
"Yes, we just hadn't gotten around to dealing with her yet. When you killed her, we actually didn't know if it was over a contract at first of it you just hated her as well. Astrid realized you answered that boys call and went after you."
"Hmm… well I can see why she'd have so many wanting her dead. I would have killed her regardless of what the boy asked though. I was just investigating weird rumors at the time I bumped into him. At no point did I say I was from the brotherhood. He just insisted I must be." He shrugged as Babette chuckled.
"That happens a lot."
"What's the plan now?" Nazir asked,
"Business as usual unless you catch wind of any assassins heading my way. I can handle any of those from the Thalmor, they are very poor at their job. I am more concerned with the Tong showing up."
"We will keep an eye out for both. I will be sure to get word to you if any are spotted or dealt with." Rygar nodded,
"I will reside at the castle for the most part, I have a few things to attend to there. I expect my involvement in the imperial nonsense to pick up, but I will relay any contracts I hear about to you. I will place them in the usual spot." Nazir nodded as Babette smiled to him.
"I hope you plan to give us the best ones."
"Of course, I would never take away your fun." He grinned to her, "I should go see if the night mother wishes to bestow any new contracts upon us." The pair raised their glasses to him as he down his remaining alcohol.
Rising he walked towards the inner sanctum where she was kept. He noticed Cicero lounging about as he entered but didn't disturb the crazy jester as he approached the night mother's coffin. It didn't take long for her voice to fill his head,
"Ah my listener, you have grown strong in your absence. Good, there are many contracts for you to execute." The Dovahkiin pulled out a book and began to write down all of the contracts given to him. Once she was finished, he received a unique warning from his mistress, "Listen well to this warning, you shall not be the only target of a contract. There shall be an unexpected target that you must protect. Be vigilant and you shall see who it is and when it shall occur. Do not hesitate or falter for disaster awaits should you fail."
"I am to stop their assassination then?"
"Yes, it shall be attempted by another, you must keep them from harm."
"I do not understand but I shall heed your words night mother. I will be vigilant."
"Go rest my child, meet your new family. You shall need your strength. I will contact you in your dreams as I have need." He bowed his head to the corpse before him before turning to leave.
"Has she bestowed new contracts, Listener?" Cicero asked enthusiastically, despite not being able to take any of said contracts.
"Yes, several in fact. I am going to meet our new family members before assigning these. I hope you are enjoying our growth?"
"Oh, very much! New brothers and sisters! Just what Cicero wanted!" Rygar chuckled,
"I am glad as well that we are growing once more. I will make sure the tenants are followed as long as I remain Listener."
"Oh, I know you will! You have already proven to be the greatest listener Cicero has ever seen!" Rygar shook his head,
"I would not claim that myself, but I shall do my best. Now I must go meet our new brothers and sisters." Cicero laughed,
"Off you go then, cicero has much to do as well." Though he doubted that very much he left the jester to his work. Making his way to the dinning hall he saw many new faces, seeing Nazir nearby he walked over to him with the list of new contracts in hand. The red guard grinned seeing so many available to them with a nod Nazir went to speak with Babette about the list. The Dovahkiin then grabbed a bottle of mead, heading to the nearest table to take a seat amongst a few of the new recruits. They all noticed him and seemed curious of his presence. He waited for them to finish their conversation before speaking with them.
"It's good to meet you brothers and sisters. I am Rygar the Listener of the Dark Brotherhood." They all seemed unsure of how to react to him, all but one dunmer woman.
"I'm honored to finally meet you Listener." He smiled to her, "Do we have new contracts?"
"Yes, we do. Nazir will assign them shortly."
"Rygar… Listener sir… are they your Speakers?" He glanced at the young argonian shadow scale who had asked the question,
"Yes, they are."
"What about Cicero?"
"He is the Keeper."
"Don't you usually have four speakers?" the dunmer asked, she seemed to be interested in the inner workings of the brotherhood. * She is probably the ex Morag Tong then *
"Two of those spots are currently open. Should any of you prove to be capable leaders, it is possible for you to be granted such a role." They all seemed surprised at this making the dragonborn chuckle, "now, why don't each of you tell me who you are and why you have joined our family." After his interaction with this group, he had learned much about them. The dunmer, Dilvesa, was indeed an ex-member of the Morag Tong. Skilled with both a blade and poison she would be a great asset to her family. * a good candidate for speaker she is but she will have to prove herself first. * He then went one to meet the remain new members before settling down with a cup of ale at one of the small tables. Nazir approached him after a little while,
"I believe I know who to assign each of these contracts, with your approval of course." Rygar accepted the paper presented and looked it over a moment before nodding. Handing it back he smiled,
"As always you know the best way to use everyone's skills."
"So, what did you think of her?"
"Dilvesa?" The red guard nodded, "Very promising. I believe she will be a wonderful sister to the others and a highly skilled member. Perhaps even becoming a speaker in time should she prove an adept leader."
"I hoped you would see what I did in her."
"How could I not? Such skill cannot go unnoticed." He took a drink of his ale as he waited for Nazir to grab his own drink.
"I meant to ask, what is weighing on you? I know something is bothering you and I would hope it doesn't mean trouble for our family." Rygar glanced his way before shaking his head,
"I have many things weighing on me. Most of which I doubt would have any involvement from our family however I was given a warning by the night mother."
"Warning about what?"
"She wasn't specific, but I need to prevent someone's death by assassination. According to her it will prove disastrous should I fail. If that is the case, I believe she wishes to prevent anything from happening to our family. I doubt she would say anything otherwise."
"Then it won't be one of our targets…"
"No, some other would attempt the assassination. She didn't say when it would be or whom I am to protect though. Only that I should stay vigilant, and I would understand when the time came."
"I hate cryptic bullshit like that."
"As do I Nazir. For now, all I can do is look out for who this possibly could be. I won't allow anything else to happen to the brotherhood." Nazir was silent a moment,
"If I catch wind of any others operating in Skyrim, I will alert you immediately."
"I appreciate it." Nazir took a long drink of his ale before probing once more.
"What else is on your mind Rygar?" the Dovahkiin snorted at his probing before relenting. Babette joined them as he spoke,
"As I said many things." Could see his assassin friend's eyes narrow, "The most predominant of which concerns the new emperor."
"Oh? Has he given you a direct order?"
"No, my orders come from Tullius, however the General was asking some rather poignant questions about my abilities and allies today. He stated that my report of our mission would be sent directly to the emperor. That is not standard procedure. I believe my display of power didn't just scare the elves."
"You think is scared the new emperor as well?"
"Yes, especially since I never divulged my dragon ally to Tullius before now." Nazir seemed to think this over as Babette asked,
"Would he feel threatened by you though? You are an ally, and officer no less."
"I'm not sure. It's possible that due to my being the dragonborn he could feel threatened. Dragonborns have often ended up becoming emperors."
"That is true, but you have no such desire."
"He doesn't know that though. I haven't exactly met the man."
"You could be seen as a threat or a pawn in some greater operation." Nazir stated, his eyes showing concern.
"Either is possible. I won't be telling them of any of my other abilities or allies. At this point I don't trust them with such information."
"Did you withhold while they were talking to you?"
"Yes, I held back using vague language once I realized something was not as it seemed. Though I would never divulge everything regardless of my trust." Babette smirked a this,
"It seems you will have to wait and see what their next move is."
"Indeed, for now though I will just rest and keep an eye on things." The subject changed to one more befitting of assassins. Recounting recent adventures and kills as they enjoyed the rest of their night. The Dovahkiin remained with them for the night, leaving in the morning to head to the college as he had told his superior officer he would be doing.
Upon entering the college, he found Tolfdir and Faralda having a heated debate in the courtyard. Rolling his eyes walked up to them, * They are like children I swear. *
"I would hope my two best wizards aren't causing a scene in front of the students." The pair glanced his way looking rather startled by his presence.
"Arch-mage Rygar, it's good to see you."
"Ah you've returned at a most apt time. Perhaps you can settle our disagreement." Tolfdir seemed overjoyed to have his superior present once more. Rygar raised a brow before asking,
"What is this disagreement you are having?"
"It would seem we wish to take different approaches when teaching the students. I prefer the hands-on method like you experienced while my colleague prefers a more academic approach." Tolfdir's explanation left a lot to the imagination, so Rygar's gaze landed upon the high elf who was looking rather irritated.
"What my colleague failed to mention is that he endangered several of our students and that my more academic lesson focused methods are far safer." Rygar sighed, * this is only JUST now coming up as a thing after the whole eye of magnus fiasco? * After a moment he spoke with them both,
"Firstly, this disagreement should have been happening in the hall of countenance NOT in the courtyard." His voice berating them, both cringing at his tone. "As to your disagreement, you both have some merit to your arguments however I have to agree with Faralda on this. Tolfdir, you did put us all in danger while we were at the ruins. We only had a single lesson on wards before you led us to that location. You didn't even assess us before hand to see if we could handle such an escapade. Not to mention it having absolutely nothing to do with our magical lessons. A field trip should have a relevant reason for occurring. I understand your fascination with history and wanting to pass that on to you students. But there is a time and place for such expeditions. As Master Wizard I expect you to put our student's safety above all else. I am not Aren; I will not look the other way should a student die. Should a student die there will be an investigation and if you are at fault, I will have no choice but to remove you as Master Wizard. Please do not make this something I have to do." He could see that his words hit both instructors, each having a different reaction to his words.
"I understand your position Arch-mage. I will take such council into consideration for any future lessons." Tolfdir's response showed his disappointment, but he wouldn't argue.
"If any field trips are to happen, please submit them to me with an explanation of their relevancy to your students' current studies. I will approve them if they are relevant and can be done safely." Rygar could see Tolfdir appreciated having this option even if such trips would now be rare. The students where here to learn magic, not dive into dungeons. Faralda was silent though he could tell she enjoyed her victory. After he was sure the pair were done arguing he nodded to them both before taking his leave. He knew there was likely a pile of paperwork on his desk. He didn't get far before he heard his destruction magic instructor's voice.
"Arch Mage if you have a moment, I would like to discuss something with you?" He glanced her way before nodding,
"What is on your mind Faralda?"
"Wanted to ask you if we could create a room more suitable for wielding destruction magic. The hall of elements has protections, but we had an incident with two students the other day. They are fine but both were injured while trying to practice their magic." Rygar considered this as they walked to his office. On the way he made note of several new students who were behaving oddly upon seeing him. * So, they have spies here already? I suppose I should not be surprised. * He responded to her question not wishing to draw any further attention.
"I believe we can find a way to create separate chambers for such practice sessions. It might take a little bit of time to create these areas though."
"I don't expect an instant result Arch-Mage." He nodded, "I have a few suggestions if you would be willing to hear them."
"Of course, I am always open to suggestions. I have told you that before." Soon they entered his office and he moved to find some parchment and a quill. He gestured for her to pull up a chair, which she did after assessing if they had been followed. "What were your suggestions?" He pointed to the door and gave her a questioning look. She nodded the mouthed 'we were followed' to him before answering his question.
"I think we could either add a room to the upper balcony or use the midden should we make a new access point for it." He nodded to her,
"Out of the two the midden has the most space. It would require a lot of work though." He spoke while pulling out a talisman. "Here let me show you the best location on the map over here." He pointed for her to walk over there, meanwhile he snuck up to the door and placed the talisman on it. It made the whole wall, and the doors glow a faint blue. Once done he walked to her side and showed her the part on the map he was talking about.
"Was that muffle spell?" She asked quietly,
"Yes, they will not be able to hear us while it is up. They should assume that we are just too far away for them to overhear any longer." She sighed,
"I'm glad you understood what I was trying to tell you."
"I knew the Thalmor would send more spies our way. It was only a matter of time. How may have you spotted?"
"At least four, there could be others though."
"I will keep a watchful eye out for them, don't worry."
"Your mission seems to have them in an uproar."
"Yes, it does. Elenwen was fuming the whole time I saw her. If looks could kill, I would already be dead."
"I have no doubt." She chuckled, "Just be careful."
"I will, I know what I am up against believe me." She was silent a moment before asking,
"Why did you choose Tolfdir as the Master Wizard?"
"I didn't choose him. He appointed himself. At the time I didn't realize that I could have chosen who took that roll. I thought he claimed it due to some hierarchy I wasn't aware of amongst the instructors." His honest answer surprised her, her brow furrowed as she seemed to think this over.
"Would you have chosen him?"
"No, he is too… absentminded for such a roll. I just don't know how to rescind such an appointment without causing an incident." It looked like he had confirmed something she long suspected.
"So, you agree that he is… reckless."
"Yes, he maybe very good with magic but his teaching methods are reckless at best. Despite his whole not rushing into things lecture he gave in the hall when I first met him. He then turned around and sent us into a newly uncovered ruin." Rygar shook his head, "On top of that he also wanted me to explore a chamber filled with draugr after it was discovered. Not even telling the other instructor that it had been uncovered. If it had been anyone else, they would have died in that chamber." Faralda looked shocked, after a moment she sighed.
"I had not realized just how reckless he was until now. You are right, had it been another student they likely would have died." After a moment he spoke once more, his gaze meeting hers.
"Faralda… I would like you to become my Advisor. Your council would be greatly appreciated while I deal with the mess left behind by Aren." He could see his high elf instructor had not expected such a request.
"I would be honored to assist you. Though I must ask why?"
"I find your level headedness and knowledge to be most helpful. I must confess I do not understand why I was made arch-mage. I was a student… I barely used magic at the time of such an appointment. I was definitely not qualified for such a position."
"Tolfdir had told us that Mirabelle at appointed you upon her death…"
"That was not the case…. I believe I was just convenient honestly. Tolfdir didn't want it but also didn't want someone more qualified to have the position."
"Because he wanted to teach his own way regardless of the danger?"
"That could be the reason though I do not know." He shrugged, "Regardless my goal is to become worthy of the position. I will fix the problems with the college and our relationship within Skyrim. Once I have done that, I will turn the position of arch-mage over to another." His eyes meet hers causing them to widen.
"Are you considering giving me the position?" Her voice filled with uncertainty.
"Yes, should you want it when the time comes. For now, I will use my influence within Skyrim to rebuild the colleges reputation." After a moment she smiled to him,
"Am I to be the shadow Arch-Mage then?" He chuckled,
"You could say that. I would prefer someone with more magical knowledge than myself have input into how we deal with things going forward."
"I am flattered that you are willing to give me such a role."
"The question remains, do you accept my proposal?"
"Yes, I accept. I shall do my utmost to aid you in improving this college and its relationship with the denizens of Skyrim." He smiled, before nodding.
"I will announce your position as my Advisor at the evening meal. Tomorrow we can look into converting part of the midden into a practice chamber."
"I look forward to working with you." With that she took her leave, their spies having left after being unable to hear anything for so long. The dragonborn sat down at his desk with a sigh, the pile of paperwork looming before him was intimidating to say the least. He knew it would be hours before he finished with his work, he only hoped there were no other death reports within the pile before him.
By the time the evening meal rolled around his mood had soured, he had found that four students had died in "accidents" while he was away. They had all been new students that he had never met. The ineptitude of his instructors had become upsetting, so many who died were just starting to use magic. He would bring this up with his advisor when he got the chance. Until then he needed to make his announcement and grab something to eat. Once everyone was settled into their tables with their meals he stepped up onto the stairs, tapping on the side of his glass to gain everyone's attention. They all looked his way, quieting down as he spoke.
"I have a couple of announcements for you all. Firstly, we will be building a new area for practicing magic within the midden. Construction for such will take some time but should provide a much safer area for practicing the more dangerous spells. For now, if you are practicing a powerful spell for destruction or conjuration please go up to the upper balcony. I do not wish for any of you to be injured while you are learning. Targets will be added tomorrow morning for you all to practice on." He heard from murmuring, holding up his hand he quieted them once more. "My second announcement is that I have appointed Faralda as my Advisor going forward, please show her the proper respect. She and I will be working to make the college safer and more effective in teaching you all the magic you came here to learn." Now the murmuring came from his instructors, "Lastly my instructors, I will be holding a staff meeting tomorrow with you in my office. Please be there at 8:30 am." After this announcement the walked back down to his seat at the head of the instructor's table. Tolfdir was sitting to his left and Faralda had taken up a seat to his right. He could see Tolfdir was a little bewildered by these announcements. He half expected Tolfdir to comment about his appointment of an Advisor, but the older man seemed reluctant to engage with that topic. Instead, he chatted with the other instructors about their students and what they were currently teaching. Rygar was suspicious of this banter as he had never heard the Master Wizard talk to anyone about the curriculum before. He glanced to Faralda giving a query that she seemed to understand, with a small smile she shook her head. He nodded and gave her a smile of thanks before returning to his meal. He was thankful that the high elf understood him well enough to interpret his gestures, only a few had ever managed to do so accurately.
After their meal he made his way to the upper balcony, looking over where to place the targets the following morning. He sensed a presence behind him, a smile creeping across his lips as he spoke.
"Looking for some respite?" he heard her gasp before she chuckled and walked up next to him.
"I suppose I am." He glanced over at her seeing her watching him.
"Are you aware that we had four deaths in the past two months?" She sighed, her expression turning grim.
"Yes, I am aware of them. All new students."
"I will not allow this to happen again. Either the instructors become more vigilant in safeguarding students, or I will remove them." He could see the surprise in her eyes as she thought over his words.
"Is that what the staff meeting is about in the morning?"
"Yes. They will get one warning. If another student dies in their care due to ineptitude, they will be replaced."
"I understand. How do you plan to replace them?"
"I have contacts across Skyrim. I can find new teachers if needed."
"Would you except recommendations from myself?"
"Yes, I trust your judgement. That is why I asked you to be my advisor."
"I believe having a replacement in mind before firing the old instructor would be best. Not having someone to fill in would hurt our students."
"I understand. If need be, I can fill in for the missing instructor. I know all the schools even if I am not a master in them. Most of the students aren't that far along due to our lack of a proper curriculum."
"Speaking of that I would like to create a proper curriculum for our students. It would make things easier for our students to learn and develop their skills faster." He smiled to his advisor; this is exactly what he wanted her to do.
"Then we shall make one. I would also like an entrance test that tells us a students skill level. No sense in putting a student who is more adept in with the new students." She nodded, then smiled to him.
"I believe this coalition between us shall prove to be very fruitful for the future of the college."
"As do I. Thank you for agreeing to assist me with his endeavor."
"It's my pleasure Arch Mage." The sun had disappeared into the sea of ghosts as they spoke. The glowing blue energy from the pillars of light providing just enough light to see by. Walking back into the college they bother enjoyed the warmth the college provided after being out in the crisp of night air.
"I'll see you at the morning meeting."
"I wouldn't miss it for the world." She smiled before taking her leave. He chuckled at her response as he headed into his study to write up a few notes for the meeting before retiring to bed hoping that the staff meeting would go well.
AAN: lots of set up needed for this one to get off the ground. Please be patient and you'll see where this is really headed.
