Chapter 3
The next morning, both teams arrived for the big game, but only to discover there was one problem: the track was all broken! The Princess wasted no time in contacting Ryder, who wasted no time summoning the pups. "I know you built it the way it was supposed to be, but it's all busted," she lamented. "Was there a storm, or was there troublemakers on the loose?"
In the background, everyone could see Mayor Goodway running in circles and screaming, "THIS IS A TOTAL DISASTER! EVERYTHING'S A DISASTER! THIS TOWN IS CURSED WITH THE CURSE OF MAYOR HUMDINGER!" (Although Humdinger was in prison for the rest of his life, it was common for people long before that to say that the town was cursed with the curse of Humdinger, because he and his KCC, or Kitten Catastrophe Crew, were always trying crazy pranks or scams to cause trouble and allegedly bring glory to Foggy Bottom, a town where it just wasn't happening.)
"There wasn't a storm," Ryder replied.
"This may be a first," Chase commented. "It was an Ultimate Construction Rescue. Now it's an Ultimate Police Rescue. Or is it?"
"It's both at the same time," said Ryder, "but let's all be construction pups since we have to fix everything. Still, go ahead and sniff out who did it if you can, Chase."
"Yes, sir; Ryder, sir!"
As before, all the pups were anthros. Sweetie, who was watching the game with the Princess, also appeared as an anthro. She fantasized about being queen, but kept her promise to the Princess to just be the royal pup, and so she settled for humming military marches to herself. These were what the band was playing when the pups, as the Mighty Pups, protected the world from the chaos of the second meteor that made the pups able to alternate between walking on all fours and walking on two legs.
As the crew got back to work fixing everything, Chase went to work sniffing out who did it. Unfortunately, he began sneezing. "Bless you," said the Princess afterwards.
"Do you sneeze a lot like that?" Sweetie asked, not wanting to be rude. "Sorry if that came off disrespectful."
"It's fine, Sweetie; it wasn't rude at all," Chase replied. "But there is only one thing that makes me sneeze like that...kittens!"
"So if it isn't the Kitten Catastrophe Crew, who is it?" Rocky asked.
"I have no idea," Rubble replied, "but they do like to cause trouble for everybody, sometimes just for laughs."
"And I even told them I banned them from ever entering my town again," the mayor added.
"You realize that they're Humdinger's mischief makers, don't you, Mayor?" Captain Turbot replied. "They always disobey the law."
"Your ban didn't work, but neither did the place that was supposed to be keeping them incarcerated," Francois put it. "The prisons need to do a better job of keeping prisoners in prison. We never had such problems back in France!"
"With cats, no. With people? Well, that's a different story."
"True."
"AH-CHOO!" Chase sneezed again. "Oh! Too much...AH-CHOO! Kitty fur!"
"Which way did they go?" Skye asked.
"This way. AH-CHOO!"
"Skye, can you look from above for me?" Ryder asked.
"On it, Ryder! Ruff! Construction copter!" Skye lifted off and began to use her goggles to search for the KCC.
Note that the Cat Pack also made Chase sneeze, but he usually had worse allergies when it came to the KCC. This was evident by the amount of times he was sneezing. "AH-CHOO!" he continued. "It definitely smells like...AH-CHOO! Humdinger's kittens!"
"The difference is that they don't have Mayor Humdinger to boss them around," Rubble commented. "Now they're just doing their own thing. I don't know how we'll figure out what their reason is for wrecking the track."
"That would have been my next question, dude," said Zuma. "Did they think it was just something else, or are they just doing it to have fun?"
"I don't know if we'll ever figure that out," Ryder replied, "but our duty is to keep those kittens from doing any further damage."
After finishing the repairs and testing everything again, the crew went to investigate the possibility of the KCC doing this. Rex stayed behind to do what he could to help, as well as answer any questions the royalty of Barkingburg had about his place in the lost world of dinosaurs. (Dr. Turbot opted to let it be open to the public after multiple incidents of Humdinger's attempts to open his own dinosaur ranch, and another one where a T-Rex got loose and ran wild in Adventure Bay. "And to think all these years they said dinosaurs were extinct!" Francois lamented. "Why did those scientists have to lie to us?"
Further investigations confirmed it was indeed the KCC's doing, but it was not clear as to what the motivation was for the kittens to do this. Ryder felt it was safe to assume it was just them pranking everybody just for the heck of it. Marshall suggested that the track was getting in the way, because sometimes the kittens just wanted to find grass to use so they could play with their yarn balls. "Just an idea," he said.
"AH-CHOO!" Chase sneezed again. "Whatever's the case, it was them, all right. My nose knows. AH-CHOO!"
"Gesundheit," Rocky put in.
Just then, Skye's goggles zoomed in on what appeared to be the cat version of Rocky. "Ryder; I think I see one of the kittens! He's just behind that rock!"
The "meow" everybody heard was the kitten panicking, and soon, all six of the kittens in the KCC ran for their lives. "Don't let them get away!" Rubble called.
"Ruff! Snowcat!" Everest called, starting up her vehicle and beginning pursuit. Chase rode shotgun with her so that he didn't have to sneeze as much, and he also changed pup packs out of sight so that he was now wearing his regular police pup pack. At the right moment, he shouted, "Ruff! Net!" The net shot out and subsequently captured all the kittens. Chase then hopped down, risking another sneeze, and gave them all a stare down as he said, "You won't be ruining any more sporting events today!"
By the time the authorities came to bring the kittens back to their version of the prison, they showed Ryder, Mayor Goodway, and some of the other humans security camera footage of how the kittens broke out of prison (using equipment from the cat version of Rocky's cat pack), as well as discuss the possibility of using lasers to prevent a jail break. "I'm not sure that's a good idea," the 10-year-old boy replied, "but the cats do love lasers."
"We will just see how it goes, then."
Back at the track, the two teams were already skating on the track, and as the public address announcer prepared to introduce the players, the mayor took another opportunity to thank the PAW Patrol. "I honestly do not know what this town would be without you and the amazing pups!" she concluded.
"You're welcome, Mayor," Ryder replied. "Whenever a bunch of kittens mess up your match, just jam for help!" Everybody had a good laugh over the comment.
In the end, Barkingburg won the game, but only by five points. It wasn't until the next day that the crew began the tear down, and by the time it was a soccer field again, the pups and Ryder also took time to get the grass as green as new.
