Vietnam Memorial Wall
Christmas Eve 1999
Harm stood and watched Jenny place his fathers wings on the ground in front of the wall. As she did this simple jester, his thoughts drifted to Mac. He'd been shutting her out, since his return to JAG and DC, his father had found comfort in a woman he'd only known a few hours, had been able to open up to her. Why couldn't he let go and do the same with Mac? Now there was the million dollar question.
Jenny started to walk away, until she felt a hand on her arm. She turned to look at the handsome young man. She could see the questions in his eyes. "He needed a friend; someone to talk to. I was there; more or less."
"Did you love him?"
"I fell in love with the feelings he brought to life; I knew he could never return them, I could tell from the way he spoke about your mother, that she is the love of his life, his best friend, the one person he wanted to be with more than anything."
Harm pondered her simple words, was it that simple? Was Mac truly the love of his life? Was it as simple as that? Was it as simple as just allowing himself to admit that Mac is all he wanted for the rest of his life. Could it really be just that simple.
Jenny watched him, she gave him a small simile, "She must be a special person if she can make your eyes sparkle in that special way."
Her words startled him."Excuse me Ma'am?"
"I just assumed you where thinking about a special young woman or your own wife."
Harm chuckled, "Actually she's a very special woman, one that I've taken for granted."
"Take it from me, tell her how you feel, because if you don't you'll spend your entire life wishing you had." Jenny walked away leaving Harm standing there looking at The Wall. Her words struck a cord with him, Mac was the part of the reason he'd come back DC if he was being honest with himself.
He made his way to his SUV. Hearing Jenny's words still echoing through his head. Was it just as easy as just talking to Mac? Could all his wishes come true if he just went and talked to her? Without even realizing it, he was now standing next to his SUV fingering his keys.
He used the remote and unlocked the vehicle, after getting in, he started it and turned on the radio, ( something that he rarely ever did ) he surfed the stations not looking really for anything special to listen to, a local Christmas station caught his attention.
Normally he hated Christmas music, but there was something about this song that made him just sit there and listen to it.
I'd like you for Christmas
Please make my wish come true
'Cause I'd dream trees and deck the hallways
If I knew you'd be mine for always
I won't be blue on Christmas
If old Saint Nick comes through
And he remembers that I'd like you for Christmas, New Year's, Easter too
She'd like you for Christmas
Please make my wish come true
'Cause she'd dream dreams and deck the hallways
If she knew you'd be hers for always
I won't be blue on Christmas
If old Saint Nick comes through
And he remembers that I'd like you for Christmas, New Year's, Easter too
New Year's, Easter too
As the song came to an end, Harm just thought, it really was just that simple as the song said. He stared his drive to Mac's place for he knew what he wanted Christmas.
Mac's Apartment
Georgetown
She heard knocking her on her door, she wasn't expecting anyone, especially this late on Christmas Eve. Long ago she'd given up ever expecting to get any visitors on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, so imagine the shock on her face when she opened her door to come face to face with last person she'd never expected.
Harm simply stood there looking at her shocked face, he couldn't tell what was going on in her head. Normally he could tell, but not tonight. So he took a leap of faith, "Care if I come in?"
His words brought her back, "No; come on in." She watched him walked and remove his cover, he was toying with it in his hands, he often did this when he was nervous. For the life of her, she had no idea why he was there. They had no new cases, plus he always went and spent Christmas Eve with his dad. She was about to speak when he beat her.
"Mac... No; Sarah, " ( he paused letting out a deep breath ) "I don't know how to start this, I don't have the right words."
She walked over to him, looking deep into his eyes, she saw something she'd longed to see, she saw love. "Tell me what you want."
"This is going to sound cheesy to you, but I'd like you for Christmas..."
Smiling at him, she walked over and took him into her arms. "All you had to do was ask Sailor."
