Chapter 1: The Birth
Berlin, Germany, 1935
Penny scowled at the map in front of her. Around the room, pinned to the walls, were a lot of posters advertising Nazism. Carlos was sitting at the desk and Sara was sitting on the floor, going through the files they'd managed to snatch.
'Jews, homosexuals, blacks, even redheads.' Carlos shook his head. 'All of them are persecuted. If we're going to help them, we're going to have to be very clever.'
'What do you mean "if"?' Sara asked. 'That's why we came to Berlin in the first place.'
'Yes, it is.' Penny looked up at them. 'But this is going to take a lot of thinking.'
The door opened and Jordan came in.
'What are you grinning at?' Penny asked.
'Sorry, auntie.' Jordan gestured out the window. 'I know I shouldn't be happy with what's going on out there but it turns out I was right. Indiana Jones is one of us.'
'How do you know?' Carlos asked.
Jordan smiled and tapped his temple. 'I've only felt this three times before.'
'What?' Sara looked at Penny for an explanation.
Penny smiled. 'The Holy Children are telepathically linked. When a new one is born, the others always feel a stirring in their minds. Jordan's saying that a new one has been born. That means that our Dr. Jones is a notable hero. He's one of us.'

Indiana Jones stood over the bassinette that had been set up in the room, looking down at the baby inside. Turning his gaze over his shoulder, Indy smiled. Marion had fallen into an exhausted sleep. After a ten hour labour and then what they called a breach birth, she deserved some rest.
Something about the kid coming out feet first. But, then again, Indy knew all the Holy Children had been born like that. Indy looked back down at his son, sleeping peacefully and wrapped up in a warm blanket.
There was a knock at the door and Indy looked up. Marcus tentatively stepped into the room. He looked around and his brow furrowed before he came over to Indy. He stared down at the baby.
'Did you know you looked just like that when you were that age?' he asked.
Indy chuckled. 'Trust you to know that.'
'What's his name?' Marcus asked.
Indy reached down and stroked the light dusting of brown hair that poked out from under the cap the nurses had put on the baby's head. 'I let Marion name him. Henry Walton Jones III.' He chuckled. 'If he's that much like me, he'll change his name before long.'
Marcus cracked a smile. Then he frowned. 'You know, I would've expected Abner to put his differences aside for this.'
Indy shook his head. 'No. Shortly before we got married, Abner told Marion that if she went through with it he'd refuse to have anything to do with her. Wouldn't even answer her calls when she tried to tell him.'
Marcus was quiet for a moment. 'Tell me, Indy. Did you extend the same courtesy to your father?'
Indy was silent for a moment. He looked back down at Henry. 'I would have…if I thought I'd get an answer. Not really worth trying to talk to someone who won't talk back.' He stared down.
'He would want to hear about this, you know,' Marcus told him.
'It has nothing to do with the Holy Grail, so he wouldn't listen,' Indy said. 'That's what I'm afraid of, though.'
'I beg your pardon?' Marcus looked at him with a puzzled frown.
'I don't want to be like that.' Indy sat down in the hard plastic chair, not taking his eyes off of his son. 'I don't want to put my obsession before my son. I want to get the Cross of Coronado out of the way as soon as I can.'
Marcus was silent for a long moment. '…How long have you been thinking about this?'
'Since Marion told me she was pregnant,' Indy said. 'But I didn't want to leave her alone while she was in that condition.'
'And you've talked to her about it?' Marcus asked.
Indy nodded. 'She agreed with me. She's given me a five year limit. If I can't find it by then, I've got to put it aside until Henry's grown up.'
Marcus turned his head in an attempt to hide a smile. 'It sounds as if she shares your opinion on this.'
'If you recall, she grew up much the same way I did.' Indy sighed and closed his eyes.
'When do you want to leave?' Marcus asked.
'We'll get settled with him first,' Indy said. 'Then I'm gone.'
