AN: This fic will only be two chapters and an epilogue to wrap things up. Without further ado, time for the dreaded Kacy phonus interruptus.
Chapter 2
The sound of a phone ringing woke Kate up the next morning. Her eyes fluttered open as Lucy shifted in bed to reach for her phone on the nightstand and answer it. The conversation was brief and happened in whispers as Kate slowly woke up and the haze of sleepiness cleared.
"I can do that. Yeah, shouldn't take long. Got it. Be in soon." Lucy quickly hung up and Kate used the sheet to cover her chest as she sat up in bed.
"Everything okay?" asked Kate. Lucy smiled apologetically over at her.
"Yeah, sorry about that. I have to head into work for a few hours. Last night was fun though, how long are you in town?" Lucy hopped out of bed to grab a shirt from her floor to put on and Kate looked around the room. In their lust for one another the night before, Kate didn't notice the clothes splayed about haphazardly. The room wasn't a biohazard zone, but it certainly wasn't as tidy as her apartment back in D.C.
"Um, Monday, I head out Monday morning," said Kate.
"Well, you have my number. I would offer you breakfast or something, but I have to get ready to go."
"No, don't worry. I get it," assured Kate. Lucy gave her an appreciative smile before hurrying into her bathroom. Kate got out of bed and quickly collected her clothes to get dressed. She was very familiar with having a job that demanded attention the moment anything came up and was actually relieved by the distraction. She wasn't looking for an awkward goodbye. By the time Lucy was out of the bathroom and dressed for work, Kate was gone and Lucy wasn't sure if she was relieved she didn't have to explain why she needed to leave so abruptly or disappointed she didn't get a kiss goodbye.
After heading back to her hotel for a hot shower and relaxing breakfast on the balcony, Kate decided to embrace the beauty of the island and beach access close to her hotel. The beach wasn't as ideal for surfing as the one she visited the day before, but it was perfect for what she needed. She spent hours laying out on the beach, catching up with a book, and listening to some music. She shook her head in amusement when she heard Dylan's ringtone and answered her phone.
"Okay, at this point, you're stalking me. You haven't called me this much since we were kids," she teased.
"I finally have some free time, so sue me. How did your night go? Let me guess, you had one glass of pinot, were disappointed they didn't serve it in a mason jar, and used that as an excuse to head back to your hotel."
"Actually, smartass…"
"Glad you remembered my middle name."
"…I met someone last night." She couldn't help but to smile as she thought about the brunette that she ended up wrapped around well into the wee hours of the morning.
"Wait, what! Really," exclaimed Dylan.
"It was just a one-night thing, but I don't know, it was different than just a hookup. It was intense in all the best ways. I've never connected with someone like that."
"Um excuse me, I'm right here." Kate giggled.
"You know what I mean. You and I were different. We grew up together, it happened over time, but Lucy was different. It's like as soon as we started talking, we knew there was something happening between us."
"Oooh, Lucy, sounds like you had a good night," Dylan practically sang.
"An amazing night," admitted Kate.
"So when are you two seeing each other again?" Kate frowned in confusion.
"We're not. What part of one night don't you understand?"
"Kate, come on. You had a good time, an amazing time, so what's the problem?"
"I don't live here and I was really clear about that."
"That doesn't mean you two can't hook up while you actually are there. Live a little, woman. Sheesh. Please tell me you at least have her number. Kate, I swear if you left without getting her number…"
"We exchanged numbers at the bar."
"Again, then what's the problem?"
"It's just…I don't know, it felt like it was supposed to be a one-time thing."
"Not if you exchanged numbers."
"Yeah but, isn't there a rule or something about calling her back so quickly? I don't want to come off as desperate."
"She gave you her number and you aren't in town long enough to play the long game here. Have fun. Don't overthink it. Just let it be a good time. If she doesn't want more than last night, then she'll drop that hint and you can finish your trip knowing you finally got some. You have nothing to lose."
"You mean besides my dignity?"
"She doesn't know you. That's what makes it exciting. Kate, you can be whoever you want this weekend, so enjoy it." Kate took in a deep breath and nodded.
"You're right. I'll call her." Dylan giggled.
"Good. Have fun and you better tell me all the dirty details later."
"I will," she giggled back before hanging up. She was suddenly nervous as she stared down at her phone and tried to figure out what to say. Lucy did say it was fun and asked her how long she was in town. Maybe that was a hint that she was open to meeting up again, but she hoped that was still the case after the post-coital bliss had worn off and they were out of their bubble. She took in a deep breath and typed out a message. She decided to take Dylan's advice and pushed send before she could overthink it.
Last night was definitely fun. Busy tonight?
She was surprised when Lucy responded back before she could put her phone down. She expected to have to wait it out and obsess over her decision, but she was relieved as she read the text.
Just getting home and done for the day. Need a tour guide?
The moment she processed the words, she called Lucy and grinned from ear to ear when she heard the giggle that made her heart flutter.
"Is this a yes," teased Lucy.
"Definitely," assured Kate.
"Good, then how about we meet up and I can show you around? I know a few places we could go. I could even pick you up from your hotel if that works."
"Perfect, see you in about an hour?"
"See you then," said Lucy. Kate grinned from ear to ear as she hung up the phone. She knew she wasn't ready to say goodbye to the brunette with the hazel eyes that consumed her every thought just yet, but a part of her still didn't expect to see Lucy again.
A couple of hours later, Kate found herself walking through a lush valley as the couple strolled to a waterfall Lucy suggested they go check out. Kate had heard about Manoa Falls and had it on her list of places to consider seeing if she had the time. Lucy smiled at the way her eyes lit up when the 150-feet waterfall came into view.
"This place is so beautiful. It definitely should've been higher on my list," said Kate.
"Your list?" Kate blushed.
"Yeah, I like to make lists. They keep me organized. I did some research about the islands and made a list of places I could see. Most of the sites were the best beaches for surfing, though. I'm actually kind of surprised we didn't end up at one. I wouldn't have minded getting the chance to see you in a bikini." It was Lucy's turn to blush as she smiled cheekily at her.
"I would love to see you in one too. The beach isn't really my thing though."
"Which beach isn't your thing?"
"Any beach, I hate the ocean. I'm not a big fan of any body of water in general, but I make an exception for this particular waterfall because I love the trail."
"Wait, you hate the ocean?" Lucy gave a confident nod as confirmation.
"Yep."
"But, you live on an island. How is that even possible?"
"I guess I'm just a complicated soul."
"Good to know," giggled Kate. Lucy held her hand out to her.
"Come on, let's go get some pictures," she suggested. Kate happily nodded and laced their fingers together as Lucy took her to get a closer look at the scenic views.
They spent the rest of the day together, cruising around the island and sightseeing. That evening, they headed back to Kate's hotel as the sun began to set. Lucy looked around the suite while Kate put down her things. She knew the view alone cost a fortune and was curious about what Kate did for a living, but decided not to open that can of worms. If she asked, Kate would ask and the last thing she wanted to think about was work when she could be focusing on the leggy blonde she planned on being wrapped up in for the rest of the weekend. She smiled when Kate wrapped her arms around her from behind and began kissing her neck.
"Thanks for showing me around today. How ever will I repay you?" Lucy almost melted on the spot when she turned in Kate's arms to see the lust and desire smoldering in her eyes.
"I think we'll figure something out," Lucy teased back before tenderly kissing her. Kate nodded as she pulled her toward the bedroom, already having plenty of ideas in mind.
They spent the rest of the weekend wrapped up in each other like that. Pleasurable hours turned into two pleasurable days. Everything about their time together was euphoric. It was room service and steamy showers. It was unspoken words conveyed only through lingering kisses. It was knowing what they were doing was more than a one-night stand, but being too caught up in the lust and pleasure to care. Both ignored the inevitable for as long as they could, but early Monday morning brought with it the goodbyes neither one wanted to say. Kate had a flight to catch and Lucy had work to focus on. The breaking of dawn set their departure into motion and Lucy held Kate closely as they stood in the entryway of the hotel suite, trying to find the words to say. It was just a weekend. Both knew it and yet everything about it felt like so much more. Kate could feel the ache in her chest, knowing that things would be different if she lived there. There was no way she could only have Lucy for one weekend if she lived even remotely close to her, but her life in D.C. was a distant memory calling her home and she couldn't change that.
"Just so you know, this meant something to me. I know it has to end here, but…" Kate trailed off as she looked down and sighed when Lucy cupped her cheek. She leaned into her touch and Lucy rested her forehead against hers.
"Me too. If you're ever on the islands, call me."
"I will." With that, they kissed each other one last time. They held each other close and reveled in one another as long as they could before Lucy's phone rang. Kate's did as well and both sighed. Kate opened the door for her and Lucy kissed her cheek.
"Safe travels," said Lucy.
"Bye, Lucy." Lucy gave her a sad smile and wave.
"Bye, Kate." Lucy forced herself to leave and not turn back, focusing on her phone call instead of the blonde that she was enamored with so effortlessly. Kate did the same and grabbed her phone. It was her boss and she did her best to focus on debriefing him on the report she received during her last meeting, but all she could think about was the brunette she wanted in her arms again.
AN: I hated writing the end to this chapter. It is so epic to think that they met in a bar, spent a weekend together, and then had to leave each other, truly believing they would never see each other again, but actually found a way back to each other. The epilogue is up next and yes…spoiler alert…our queens are together in it because Kacy Endgame is all I know how to write.
