Chapter 10
Violet slowly walked with Peggy after seeing the catastrophe that had happened with the 107th and Steve Rogers who had tried to make a good run at the show that he had been ordered to put on. They came closer where Steve dressed in an overcoat, sitting on the edge of the stage sketching.
"That was quite a performance." Peggy said, voicing their arrival.
Steve saw both Peggy and Violet there. He stood up rather surprised to see the two of them there. "Yeah, I had to improvise a bit. The crowds I'm used to are usually more...twelve." He said rubbing his neck knowing how strange it sounded.
"I understand you're "America's New Hope"." Peggy said, looking at Steve, her lips quirking a bit.
Steve noticed that his Captain America suit was exposed. He quickly moved his coat, closing it keeping his suit hidden as he sat down. "People buy bonds, bonds buy bullets, bullets kill Nazis. Sales rise ten percent in every state I visit."
Violet's brow raised as she looked at Peggy and then to Steve. "Is that Senator Brandt we hear?"
Steve looked up at the two women. "Hey, Phillips was going to stick me in a lab. At least Brandt got me here."
"And are those your only option?" Peggy questioned looking at the sketch that he had drawn up. "Lab rat or dancing monkey? You know you're meant for more than this."
Steve took a breath through his nose knowing that Peggy had a point. "It's just, you get enough people telling you you're a hero, after years of them telling you you're nothing… All I dreamed about was coming overseas, being on the front lines, serving my country. I finally get everything I wanted and I'm wearing tights." He looked up seeing a platoon of tired wounded soldiers. He watched an ambulance pull up to the hospital tent. "Looks like they've been through hell."
Violet pursed her lips together as she crossed her arms.
"These men more than most." Peggy admitted.
Steve eyed Peggy understanding what she meant. "Hydra?"
"Not officially." Violet said letting out a breath as she shifted a bit of her weight onto her right foot.
"Back home, that's a yes." Steve said, looking at the two of them.
Violet leaned in so he could hear. "Schmidt was moving a force through Azzano. 200 hundred men went up against them, less than fifty came back. Your audience contained all that's left of the 107th. The rest were killed or captured." She said softly not giving a damn of what would happen.
"The 107th?"
Peggy nodded her head. "Yes, what?" She questioned seeing the look in Steve's eyes.
Steve got up to his feet pulling Peggy up as well. "Come on." He said running out of the tent holding onto Peggy's arm.
Violet quickly followed Steve and Peggy quickly knowing that they had lit a fire under Steve's ass knowing that this probably wasn't a good sign.
Steve barreled into Colonel Phillips' tent with Peggy and Violet behind him.
Colonel Phillips looked up from the stack of papers that he was working with. "Well, if it isn't "the star spangled man with the plan." What is your plan exactly?"
"Azzano. I want to see the casualty list." Steve said knowing that this probably wasn't a good thing.
Phillips pointed to the ranking insignia on his collar. "You don't get to give me orders, "Captain"."
"I don't need the whole list. Just one name. Sergeant James Barnes from the 107th."
"You and I are going to have a conversation later that you won't enjoy." Phillips said, looking at both women.
Violet rolled her eyes.
"Just tell me if he's alive, sir. BA-R…"
"Do not spell at me, son."
Peggy saw that Steve's resolve was starting to crumble. She turned to Colonel Phillips. "Sir, Rogers is only on loan to the USO. Officially, he is still SSR."
Colonel Phillips eyed Steve finally relenting. "Barnes?"
Steve nodded his head firmly. His jaw clenched tightly.
Phillips picked up the thick stack of letters leafing through the first few of them. "I've signed more condolence letters today than I'd care to count. But the name does sound familiar. I'm sorry."
Steve's face paled, his words sinking in. He stared at the map of Austria on the wall along with the aerial photos of a facility that he didn't know of. "What about the others? You're planning a rescue mission?"
"Yeah. It's called "winning the war"."
"But if you know where they are…"
"They're thirty miles behind the lines. Through some of the most heavily fortified territory in Europe. We'd lose more men than we'd save. I don't expect you to understand that, because you are a chorus girl."
Violet gripped her hands tightly at her sides.
"I think I understand pretty well." Steve said rather cooly, not liking how Phillips was talking to him.
"Then understand it somewhere else. If I read the posters right, you've got someplace to be in a half hour."
"Yes, sir. I do." Steve said, taking one last look at the maps before he left.
Violet turned on her heels following him. "Steve." Violet called out causing the younger man to stop and turn his attention to her. "I know what you're thinking."
"You do?"
"I'm a military personnel. Of course I know what you're thinking. You want to go behind enemy lines." She said, keeping her voice low. "You're going to need a pilot to take you in."
"And you have someone in mind?"
"I know who to talk to." Violet said with a nod of her head. "You're going to have to play this close to the chest. Go and get what you need and meet at my tent later."
Steve swallowed the lump in his throat and nodded his head firmly knowing that was what he needed to do. Steve turned on his heels and moved away from the woman.
Peggy came out of the tent and came up to Violet. "What are you planning?"
"Being behind enemy lines isn't a good thing. They made a mistake of sending people in that deep."
Peggy's brows furrowed together. "And you're thinking…"
"That Steve can get them out?" Violet said, looking at her. "More than anything. He's one single man… they won't expect it…"
"I hope you're right."
