The summer weather was unrelenting on the city of Los Angeles. Perry Mason and Della Street didn't mind the heat as they were used to it. Perry had finished his trial, and soon he and Della would travel out of town on a much-needed vacation to their cabin at Lake Tahoe. Married for several years, the couple vacationed there when they needed a break from their trials. Although they owned a nice house out of town away from the city, it was there in Tahoe where they could be one with nature, and Della loved the addition of gaining a cabin.
"Della, are you ready to go home and pack for our weekend getaway?" Perry asked as she covered her typewriter. Della smiled satisfyingly that the day was finally over. He walked from the law library and grabbed his briefcase and her purse with his other hand. Della stood by his desk as he gave her purse to her with a huge grin.
"Chief, I can't wait to go out to the cabin. It's so refreshing and relaxing. I'm so glad we're making a trip out there this weekend." Della wrapped her arms around his waist as he pulled her into his embrace.
"Me too. I wonder if the fish will be biting out on the lake. I'm going to take up some fishing while we're out there." Perry peered down into her hazel eyes and stroked her lower back.
"Yes, I know. I figured that you would since it's been a while, and you're going to be making up for it." Della leaned forward and kissed him.
"Della, so are you going to join me out on the lake while I fish, or are you going to do wifely duties and spruce up the cabin?" Perry whispered against her lips before he gave her a chaste kiss to her mouth and her cheek.
"I completely forgot to tell you that the delivery company is supposed to drop off furniture for the den. I'll need to be at the cabin to sign off on the paperwork." Della told him in a teasing manner while he looked down at her chest and back up to her face.
"Oh, the delivery men, huh. You going to be okay without me being there? Do I need to hang around until they are gone?" Perry asked her with a concerned tone.
"I'll be fine Perry. Don't worry. As long as they see the car, I'm sure they will think you're not too far away." Della assured him.
"Okay." Perry released her from his grip, and she shook her head while he opened the door.
"You know that you'll be out first light out on the water. Don't worry, Perry. You're the only one for me, and in case the men are handsome, I won't be looking." Della's voice was sultry, and he clicked his tongue in reply as they walked to the parked car.
On their way home, Perry picked up take out from the Italian Cuisine Restaurant. Once they arrived at their apartment, Della opened the apartment door as Perry carried their meals to the kitchen table. Della toed off her shoes and released a sigh of relief as her feet ached all day. Della made it perfectly clear to Perry that hunger won out, and she would be taking a nice, hot bath after dinner which he didn't protest.
Della packed their suitcases after their refreshing bath together so that they could be on the road early in morning. Perry found a novel that Della bought at the bookstore a few weeks ago and tossed it in his suitcase. Della packed the essentials and also found massage oil which she wasn't leaving without. Della finished packing while Perry made sure the dishes were put away, and the trash was emptied in the respective receptacle. Della came from the bedroom carrying a small tote and sat it down by the front door.
"Perry, there are two more suitcases in the bedroom. Would you grab them please?" Della called out to him while she combed her hair and saw movement in the bedroom.
"Sure. Della, I need to stop by the little shop by the market to fill my tackle box since you'll be stocking up on the groceries." Perry said to her as he carried the suitcases to the front door and sat them down. They settled in for the night to get up early in the morning.
"Yes, I will most certainly need to stock up on our supplies for the weekend. Steaks, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, dessert, and wine or champagne?" Della joined him in the bedroom and looked up at him quizzingly.
"Surprise me, Della." Perry gazed at her as a smile played on his lips.
"Okay, I can do that." Della pulled the sheets back on the bed while Perry followed her example and gathered her in his arms to hold her through the night.
Early that morning, the alarm clock stirred Perry awake, and he shut off the alarm. Della laid on his chest and stirred against him as she elicited a soft moan from her lips. Perry raked his hand over his face and caressed her backside.
"Della, we need to get dressed if we want to beat the traffic to the airport." Perry whispered into her hair, and she brushed her leg against his thigh. He groaned when she moved her knee closer to his already half-mast erection, and she kissed his chest before she smiled against him.
"You better get up yourself, Chief. You don't want to stay in bed all morning, do you? After all, you have a problem, and I have the remedy." Della teased him in her raspy voice before she disengaged from his arms and walked to the bathroom. Della knew she wasn't going to get away with that, but Perry had every intention of beating the traffic this morning.
Della dressed in a navy blue and white sleeveless sundress with white sandals while Perry wore navy Chino pants with a white polo shirt and brown loafers. He opened the door and picked up the suit cases as Della followed him with her smaller suitcase. He locked the front door while Della proceeded out to the car, and placed the larger suitcases in the trunk and got in the driver seat.
As he looked for oncoming traffic, Perry pulled the car onto the highway. Since Perry charted an airplane out to Lake Tahoe and rented a car, it wouldn't take a long time to get to the cabin. He pulled the car into the bait shop while Della went to the country store to pick up their food and perishables. Perry looked at the lures and the bait that he thought would be pleasing to the hungry fish. He hoped the clerk was right about the newest models of lures and purchased them. Perry walked out with his items after he tipped the clerk for his advice and placed the bait into his tackle box. He glanced up from the car and saw Della carrying two bags of groceries, and he walked towards her and took a bag from her.
"Perry, thank you. Did you find what you were looking for in the bait shop?" Della asked as Perry opened her car door.
"Yes, the newest edition of the lures was on stock. I just finished stocking my tackle box when I saw a lovely woman who needed my helping hand approaching me." Perry took the other grocery bag from her and placed it on the bench seat, leaned back against the car and pulled her to him. He didn't care who saw their public display of affection.
"A helping hand, Perry? I could have easily carried them all by myself." Della placed her arms around his waist and pulled him into her embrace as he caressed her forearms. He leaned into her and gave her a quick, chaste kiss on her lips before he swiped a curl off her brow when the breeze slightly blew around them.
"Looked to me like you struggled back there." Perry said to her in a baritone voice that always made her knees go weak. She brought her hands from around his waist to his chest and swatted him playfully before she shook her head and giggled at his allegation.
"I wasn't struggling that much. I had it under control until I saw you looking all handsome as you tended to your tackle box." Della laughed at him while he grinned at her playful mood.
"If you say so Della, I know what I saw." Perry replied and pulled her close for another kiss and released her from his grip before she got into the car. Perry shut her door, walked around it, and got in. Once they reached the cabin, the place was quiet, and the outside was neat and tidy. The grounds crew had recently tended to the lawn.
"The place looks very nice, Perry." Della spoke up as he parked the car in the driveway. He looked towards the house and back at her with a smile.
"Yes, the groundskeepers have done a wonderful job. Come on, Della. Let's get unpacked and settled so I can check on our boat at the dock." Perry said anxiously before he exited the car. He opened the trunk to the car, retrieved the suitcases, and carried them to the house. Della couldn't help but smile at his eagerness. He was like a kid in a candy store when he was out on the water.
Della put the groceries away as Perry carried the suitcases to their bedroom. Della had her back turned away from him while she put the last of the perishables in the cabinet. He noticed that she wasn't paying attention when he came from the main den. She busied herself and packed him a small lunch to take with him. He walked up behind her, placed his hands on her shoulders, and leaned into her space, before she felt his warm breath on her ear. Della leaned back into his chest, and looked over her shoulder to see him peering down at her.
"I'm heading out to the lake. I'll be out there most of the day. Are you sure you don't want me to hang around here until the delivery men get here? You're sure you're going to be fine?" Perry asked as he kissed her ear and her neck, which caused her to sigh when she felt his tongue dart out to taste her salty skin.
"Perry, I'm sure. I packed you small lunch to take out with you on the boat. What would you like for your drink? Cola, Pepsi, or Root Beer? I placed your book in your tote too. It looks like a very interesting read." Della replied and returned his kiss on his cheek and his mouth.
"Put all three in there. The book looks interesting, Della. Is it a romance novel or a mystery? I get the hint, Della. You are running your husband off so you can flirt with the delivery men. Are you making dinner this evening?" Perry turned her around and pinned her against the kitchen counter with his large frame.
"If you're not home by dark, what should I do? Eat dinner alone, or look for you out on the lake?" Della lowered her eyes seductively down the front of his shirt.
"I'll be home for supper, Della. For you, I'm always a starving man." Perry lowered his gaze to her lips and captured them with his. Perry deepened the kiss as Della wrapped her arms around his waist. He pulled her flush against him and kissed her passionately. Reluctantly, Perry pulled away from her eager mouth, grabbed his lunch in one hand, and departed the kitchen before he glanced back after he opened the door and closed it. Perry took the tackle box out from the car trunk and walked down to the boat dock. He left Della the car in case she needed it.
The morning sun peeked above the tree line. Perry knew he had to hurry before the fish stopped biting, or he'd be out on the lake all afternoon and into nightfall. He untied his boat and steered it out onto the lake. A few early boaters had dropped their anchors and picked out their fishing spots. Perry ferried his boat out further from the shoreline and dropped his anchor. He set up his fishing pole, baited his hook, casted the line out into the water, and sat down in his chair. Although Perry wasn't hungry for a snack, he opened his lunchbox and found the book. He read the introduction and was intrigued.
Meanwhile, Della walked through the cabin and checked to see if the housekeeper changed all the linen before she walked into the spare room. The cabin was meant for just the two of them, but the extra rooms weren't a problem for Della. She longed for a baby with Perry, and the thought of having one was always in the back of her mind. She wanted to keep the room open in case they would be expecting. Miracles happen every day, and they never lost hope. Della shook her head and walked back into the bedroom, where she unpacked their belongings. She had a few hours before the deliverymen arrived and wanted to tidy up the place.
A few hours later, the phone rang while Della prepared for dinner.
"Hello, yes, this is Mrs. Mason." Della smiled into the receiver.
"This is Owen's Furniture Company. The delivery men will be out this morning to deliver your furniture." The older man said while rustling was heard in the background.
"Okay, I'll be here. Thank You." Della placed the phone back onto the receiver.
As she patiently waited on the delivery truck to arrive, Della kept a watchful eye out the window. Finally, after an hour she could hear the approaching truck. A few stops were made along the houses as the men checked the address since the truck driver was new to the area. The second man who assisted him was very familiar with the area, and whose house belonged to whom.
"Come on, Mack. We need to deliver these items before our boss has our heads." The older man told him firmly and pointed to Perry's cabin.
"I know. He's growled at me every time I'm late with a customer's order. I'm sorry. I'm not from around here, Ralph. I just moved here, and give me some time, and I'll know the roads here better than anyone else." Mack replied as he steered the truck around the bend and saw a Cadillac parked in the driveway. The older man had the paperwork in his hand for Della to sign, and the younger man shut the truck off before they exited the vehicle. Della looked out the window and greeted the delivery men at the door with a smile.
"Hello. Are you Mrs. Mason? We have your delivery. Where would you like for us to put your furniture?" Ralph told her politely with a toothy grin.
"Yes, sir I am." Della said responded and met them outside.
"We're in sort of a rush because we have another delivery at the warehouse that we need to pick up." Mack eagerly said as he wanted to rush the older man who was inclined to stare at Della far too long for her liking.
"Come on. Ralph, would you help me! Let's get a move on, or the boss will have our hides!" The young man called out to him. Della signed the paperwork before the men grabbed the wooden cabinet and lounge chair. Another item that was on the list was a surprise since it was smaller and folded up, and Della had no idea what the purchase was. As far as she knew, it wasn't anything she ordered unless Perry ordered it, but he would have told her about the extra expense.
"We didn't order that." Della expressed confusion at the object.
"Your order was the only one on this route and we can't take it back to the warehouse, Ma'am. As far as we are concerned, it's yours to keep." Mack tipped his hat and smiled before he climbed back inside the cab of the truck.
"Thank you. I'm sure my husband will make use of it. If there happens to be charge on our account, my husband will gladly pay for it." Della gave her thanks to the men, and stepped away from the truck.
"If our inventory is off by one item, I'm sure our boss will find the error and will charge your account, but if not, take it as a gift from our boss. Sometimes he is a generous fellow to our new customers." Ralph smiled at her from his seat. Mack started the truck and headed out onto the highway.
"Did you see that lady? She was a knock- out, and I'm sure her husband wasn't too far from the house. You saw that nice wedding ring, didn't you? I bet he is someone of importance." Ralph took a cigarette out of his shirt pocket and lit it.
"Yes, she was very beautiful, and I'd hate to tangle with her husband although he never showed his presence, but her ring sure did." Mack steered the truck onto the major highway route and looked over at his colleague.
"Yeah, I guess you're right." Ralph replied after he took another drag off his cigarette.
Della admired the furniture, but the extra furniture piece puzzled her. She thought to herself, 'What could it be?' She decided to wait, when Perry returned, he would find out what it was. She wondered if it was something that they should keep or give it to her family as a gift. Della didn't give it a second thought and went back into the kitchen.
Perry secured his fishing pole onto the boat and watched the line in the water. He watched the water rippling as he thought he snagged a fish on his line, but it was only a small tug on his lure. He took the pole from the fastener and held tightly onto the line and reeled in his catch. He caught a massive rainbow trout and he secured it on his line before he dropped it into his water bucket. He rebaited his line and casted out his line again. After a few more minutes, his line caught something else which thrashed in the water. Perry had a fight on his hands as he reeled the line toward his boat and pulled the fish towards the surface to reveal a big mackinaw. It was much bigger in size than the rainbow trout, and he placed it on a stringer along with his other catch.
Perry's day was getting started, and he considered himself lucky as he already had caught two fish, and it was mid-morning already. It was short lived as he casted his line again out into another direction and patiently waited. As he patiently waited for a half hour, he hadn't caught anything. Perry settled in his chair as he waited and watched. He reeled his lure in again and cast his line a few yards from his previous spot and sat down and looked at the book Della bought him. He flipped open the cover and read the introduction. He smiled to himself and would thank Della when he returned since this was a mystery novel with a hint of a forbidden romance.
