Chapter 58:

Julia listened carefully to what her superior, Mathieu Belford, told her about the three investors – two men and a woman – who were in the room with them. But she could easily see that the previous scene had disturbed them all very much. And honestly, she had a hard time understanding why. They were not doing anything wrong after all.

"Here…" Dr. Belford concluded before consulting his pocket watch. "I see you've finished your shift... By the way, could you take over the operation from Doctor Richardson who has already gone home?" his superior asked kindly.

The young woman smiled and turned to take her hat from her coat rack, under the intrigued gaze of the people present in the room.

"No. I'm sorry, but I have a date with my companion tonight." she smiled under the looks of shock from her three colleagues who had never known her like this.

She was always working overtime to prove her worth. She accepted anything and everything while the other men had the right to come home on time. It was all over. Someone was actually waiting for her outside and she did not care what anyone thought of her skills. She had proven herself enough like that, all to earn an ounce of respect. She had not had a raise for all the extra hours she had worked, nor a simple recognition of the doctors whose patients she was taking back... So why continue? She too had the right to leave on time.

Julia smiled at her interlocutors then passed gracefully between them, beaming.

"Please excuse me." she told them kindly, until she opened her office door and found William standing in the middle of the hallway.

He looked at her and she smiled. She walked over to him and took his arm.

"Where are you taking me?"

"Where you want, my love." he replied lovingly.

Julia quickly turned to her open office door where the six people were still standing.

"I wish you a good evening, ladies and gentlemen."

Mathieu Belford was in his office, his face downcast. He still remembered the moment he opened the door and saw Julia in the arms of a man. He had recognized him immediately, having seen him recently in the papers about The Winter Mist train affair. It was Detective William Murdoch, and he could not help but think he had pushed Julia into his arms by giving her vacations. If he had revealed his feelings to her before, maybe things would have been different…

He sighed. It really did something to him to see her like that. Especially since she seemed so happy since returning from vacation… He did not think it was because of that. In addition, she no longer worked any overtime. She was doing what she should have been doing from the start: only her own job, not the extra work of others.

And this man... He was extremely handsome, and Mathieu had to admit that he did not come close to his ankle, according to him. Now that he had seen Julia's eyes shining when she looked at her lover, his only wish was that she would not leave the hospital to stay with him more often.

Note: Poor Mathieu... Thanks for reading! Thanks for the last comment :) It's true that it's Crabtree who interrupts them most often haha.
