Season 1, Episode 1: "Johnny Test's Halloween Spook-tacular"
High School. These two words can send chills down an adolescent's spine. I've been in High School for a couple years, and let me tell you, it's FUCKING HELL! We've got people shoving others in lockers, random ass fights in the hallway, people losing their virginity in the restrooms (remind me never to go into another public restroom), and people trying to kill each other.
Today, the chilly October breeze is more pronounced. I walk to school like I normally do. I pass Maddox Thompson's home on the way there. His mother is preparing for Halloween outside. She gives me a wave. I return the kind wave and head for school. I walk in and there is utter chaos. Students are shouting, lockers are being hurled, and the teachers don't give a damn. It's absolute chaos. I attempt to head to class while avoiding being decapitated by flying lockers. I enter homeroom and take my seat. There's no teacher in the room. The principal enters and tells the class that there's a substitute today. The substitute walks in, and it's my Junior High teacher, Mr. Teacherman.
"Alright class, today we're gonna learn about the quadratic formula!" he says. I doze as Teacherman mumbles on about Algebra. The bell rings, dismissing us for our next class. As I'm walking to class, I'm confronted by the school bully, Nathan.
"Hey, Lame-y," he says. I scoff.
"My name's Johnny, and you already knew that, asshole!" I snap at him. He just laughs and shoves me with his hands.
"Come on! Fight like a man, not a wuss!" Nathan says. Suddenly we're surrounded by a group of teens recording with their phones. Then I hear a familiar voice, one I've heard every day since Junior High. It's Maddox. He walks up, smiling at all of them. My heart starts beating faster than before.
"You think you're hot shit, right, Nathan?" he asks.
Nathan looks taken back at first but soon turns into an angry expression. "Oh, shut up, Maddox. You know what happens to losers like you."
Maddox glares at him. "I could say the same thing to you! You're gonna have your dick cut off if you ever lay a fucking hand on Johnny again."
Nathan scoffs. "Pfft, whatever!" Nathan walks away as Maddox turns back to me.
"Don't let Nathan get to you. He's an ass," Maddox says. I smile.
"Thank you, Maddox," I reply. He nods and walks out the class. I continue to my next class, then my next class, then my last period class...and every single time I see Maddox, I feel my face turn red. The fact that I couldn't stand up to Nathan by myself is embarrassing enough, but the fact that Maddox had to stand up for me? I can't even show my face! As I'm walking out of the school to head home, Maddox stops me.
"Hey, Johnny, I'm having a Halloween Party next Friday," he says, handing me an invitation. "You should come!" I stick the invitation in my backpack.
"I'll try to make it, Maddox." I say. He nods his head and runs off as I continue home. When I walk inside, the smell of spaghetti enters my nostrils. At least it's not Dad's meatloaf. Again. I plop on the couch and feel a rush of relief. Another day of school come and gone.
"So, I heard you almost got in a fight today," Dad says. I sigh. He knows about the situation between Nathan and I.
"Yeah, I was walking by and Nathan decided to start shit." I shrug.
"Jonathan Test! Watch your language," Mom shouts from the kitchen.
"I'm sorry, Mom. I'm just peeved." Dad chuckles.
"Why do you let that Nathaniel kid bully you? Back in my day, I'd tell my parents and they'd go to the bullies house and confront his parents," Dad says. I look up at Dad.
"When exactly WAS your day? You're, like, 60!"
"WHAT! I'M IN MY MID-FORTIES!" Dad shouts. I sigh and stand up.
"I'm going up to my room," I say. I close my bedroom door behind me. I take out my laptop from my nightstand and lay on my bed with it. I open the laptop and get started on my homework. By nightfall, I'm so exhausted, I can't even play video games. I get into my pajamas and crawl underneath the covers. My eyelids droop. Just when I'm starting to drift asleep, someone knocks on my bedroom door. Mom and Dad enter my room.
"We found this Halloween Party invitation in your backpack," Mom says, showing the invitation. "Do you want to go?"
"I don't know," I say. Dad and Mom sit on my bed next to me.
"Johnny. You're 16. You really need to start making friends," Dad says.
"I do have a friend. Maddox." I say.
"Well, Maddox isn't exactly the best influence," Dad says.
"He's the one who stood up toward Nathan for me!" I say.
"What did you DO to Nathan anyway?" Mom asks. "Why does he bully you?"
"Hell if I know!" I say. "Now, can you please leave my room so I can sleep?" Mom and Dad leave my room, closing the door behind them. I finally drift off to sleep. Monday at school, the principal calls me into his office.
"Mr. Test, Nathaniel Kramer says you punched him," he says.
"WHAT?! NO I DIDN'T! HE SHOVED ME AND CALLED ME ABYSMAL INSULTS!"
"Jonathan, just because he shoved you doesn't mean you need to retaliate and punch him," the principal says. "Retaliate"?! Ugh. Why won't the principal get it through his thick skull that I didn't punch Nathan? He is such an imbecile.
"Look, Jonathan! No use in lying! Nathaniel told me everything!" Principal Davis exclaims. Great. That little prick told lies to the damn principal.
"Principal Davis! You can't believe EVERYTHING that comes out of Nathan's stupid-ass mouth! Check the damn security camera!" Principal Davis has a stern expression. He looks at the security camera footage. The video shows Nathan pushing me, the group of kids showing up, and Maddox stepping in.
"Well, looks like you were right, Johnny," Principal Davis says. "Looks like I owe you an apology."
Without another word, I leave the office. Tuesday is a whole new level of Hell. People are throwing things, people are fighting. I end up getting hit with something once or twice and once I fall off a curb. This is a fucking nightmare. Friday, after another frivolous week of school, I head toward Maddox's house. He's in the basement, setting up.
"Johnny! You're early!" he says. He's setting up the snack bar. "Can you finish this up? I need to take care of something."
I nod. Maddox heads upstairs as I finish setting up the table. I decide to try a beer. I've never drank beer before. It tastes terrible, so I dump it into the plant. Moments later, guests start arriving one by one. I was unaware that this was a costume party, so I feel underdressed. I see a boy in women's clothing
"Why are you wearing that?" I ask.
He smirks. "I came as the scariest thing I know. My mom!"
I roll my eyes and watch as the rest of the guests show up. Everyone is here. Bling-Bling Boy, Gil, Sissy and her boyfriend Mitchell "Bumper" Randalls. Bumper was my former school bully in Middle School. But as he grew up, he became a better person. Sissy still deplores me though. Bumper actually works part time at Taco Chime. Maddox comes back downstairs.
"Sorry about the wait," he says. "Let's get this party started!" After about 15 minutes of the party, I notice Nathan. But he's acting suspicious. I decide to ignore him. If that retard does something to get hurt, he deserves it. I grab some tacos and head back upstairs. I'm sitting on the stairs, overlooking the party. I look at my watch. 7:42. Susan and Mary should be here with some games. Where are they? I hear someone clear their throat behind me.
"Excuse me, you're in my way." he says.
"Oh, sorry Orthal." I move as he tumbles down the stairs.
"FUCK!" he shouts. If only I got it on video. I would've posted it on SnoobTube. I call Susan and Mary on my phone.
"Where the hell are you?!" I shout.
"Sorry we're late. We got held up by traffic." Mary says.
"It's fine. So, where are you guys?" I ask.
"We're almost there. We got the Mundo-Blutto Water Soaker. Never know when you'll need it," Susan says. I hang up.
"Hey, Johnny, bruh! I'm heading home. Ciao!" Gil heads upstairs and I hear the front door close. A few moments later, Susan and Mary arrive with armfuls of Halloween-themed party games. Like Pin the Arm on the Zombie, Murder Mystery: The Board Game, and The Haunted House of Horrors (a game we played as children), all the stuff I would usually play is here. We're playing "Murder Mystery" when the lights turn off. I hear a girlish scream before the lights come back on. Maddox is missing, but there's a pool of blood where sat. There's also a note stuck to a chair. It reads: "You're Next". I gulp.
"What the hell?! This can't be happening!" Bumper panics. He paces back and forth as Sissy tries to calm his nerves. I wonder who would do such a gruesome thing to Maddox. He's a good person.
"Nathan! You had a motive for murdering Maddox!" I shout.
Nathan scoffs. "Yeah, I hate the asshole, but I didn't KILL him!"
Maddox returns from the closet.
"You're alive?!" I say.
"Of course, Jonathan Test. I only screamed because I'm afraid of the dark." I pick up a Solo Cup from under Maddox's chair. He must've spilled his fruit punch when the lights went out.
"So why were you in the closet?" Susan asks.
"Yeah, that's rather suspicious." Bling-Bling Boy says. "And this coming from someone who used to hide in Susan Test's closet."
"What?" Susan says.
Bling-Bling replies, "N-Nothing."
Maddox chuckles. "That's where the circuit breaker box is," Maddox says. I shrug. We go back to the board game. The chandelier sways back and forth as the lights continuously flicker, occasionally flashing red. A strange feeling begins to form inside me. It feels like⦠Fear. I feel my body quiver as I hear strange noises come from the closet. The closet door creeps open and Dukey steps out. But he's different. His eyes are blood red. His fur is overgrown and matted.
"Welcome to Hell, Johnny Test!" he says in the deepest monotone. Dukey raises his arms and the room starts to shake slightly. The chandelier swings rapidly before crashing down. Everything in the roam floats before ultimately falling.
"Holy shit! What is that?!" Maddox yells. The lights shut off again. I hear Nathan yell. Maddox turns on his flashlight to see that Nathan's gone, leaving behind is comically large glasses. There's a knife on the floor beside Nathan's glasses. Yeah, the boy was cruel, but some part of me feels like I should investigate. But suddenly, Nathan comes tumbling down the stairs. He looks slightly different. His eyes glow red. I look over at Maddox, whose eyes are also glowing red. I look around to see everyone else had left in fear. That's when it dawned upon me that these guys aren't human. They're robots! They corner me against a wall, saying "ANNIHILATE JOHNNY TEST!"
I try to fight them, but it's futile. I run over to the smashed table and grab the Mundo-Blutto Water Soaker that Mary and Susan left behind. If it worked on those Boyborgs five years ago, it should work on these guys. They're practically the same machines. I blast the two of them at the same time. They short circuit and I make a run for it. I still have no idea who killed Maddox and Nathan and replaced them with robots. As I'm running up the stairs, I start floating in the air. I look and see Dukey with his arms in the air, making me levitate. I try to push away from Dukey's levitation, to no avail. I pull a pistol out of my pocket. I aim it at Dukey.
"You wouldn't kill your best friend, would you, Johnny?" he says with a deep voice. I quiver aiming the gun.
"No," I say. "But I will kill that damn demon possessing you!" I take a shot and the bullet flies right through Dukey's chest. I drop down. I can't believe I just put a bullet in my best friend. I collapse on the ground next to Dukey's lifeless body. What was I supposed to do? He was possessed by an evil spirit. I didn't want to kill him, but I had no other choice. Suddenly, over my sobbing, I hear mechanical whirring. Curious, I feel Dukey. He's metal?! So this was a robot the whole time!
Now I'm furious. Not only are Maddox and Nathan gone, I also thought I'd killed my best friend. I march upstairs. Madeline and her best friend, Francine Owens, are sitting on the couch watching a horror movie. "Madeline!" I shout. Maddie jumps. "Your brother's dead!" I say.
Francine laughs.
Madeline sighs. "No he's not. He's upstairs playing video games!" She points up. Now I'm really confused. Bewildered, I run upstairs, and lo and behold, Maddox is on his PC, acting innocent.
"Hey, Johnny!" he says. I shove him against a wall.
"Don't play innocent with me, Maddox Thompson! What did you do to Nathan?!" I growl. He pulls my arms away.
"I only killed him so he wouldn't bully you anymore!" he says defensively.
"So then why the robotic of yourself?!" I shout.
He rolls his eyes. "Well, it was in case anybody discovered the robot replica of Nathan, so nobody could blame me, because I'm 'dead' and replaced by a robot!" Maddox is now shaking like a leaf in a windstorm. As Maddox is trying to reason with me, I feel an intense anger. Maddox has never been anything but kind to me, especially since we were kids.
"Where's Nathan's body?!" I say. He pulls a trash can from his closet and shows me a bloody corpse.
"He's no longer a problem, Jonathan." Maddox says. I can't believe this! How could someone as nice as Maddox kill Nathan?! Sure,Nathan was a punk, but he didn't even deserve this. And Maddox went through all that trouble just to get rid of Nathan? I run away from Maddox's house. I run to the police station and tell them everything. The police follow me to Maddox's and they investigate. They find the body in Maddox's room. After questioning Maddox, they decide to charge him with the murder of Nathan. The judge decides to sentence him to twenty years in prison. As I leave the courthouse, I begin to think about everything that happened. How did everything float? Why would he do this? I choose not to think about it and head home, with Dukey following.
"What? No 'Hi Dukey"? No 'Thanks for waiting like a good boy, Dukey'?" he says.
"Look, I've had a long weekend. I just need to rest." I say. Dukey shrugs. This has been one strange Halloween.
