"DId I ever tell you why Wendy didn't marry me?" Tony began quietly. Gibbs shook his head mutely.
"She found out about Danny, wanted me to leave the police force and go back to my father. She said that a person with a name like mine didn't belong in law enforcement on a tiny salary, that I should be next to my father, making millions every year off of other people's misfortunes."
"Well, I told her I wouldn't do it, that I loved being a cop even though Danny had completely stabbed me in the back. She argued that because Danny was dirty, I would be seen as dirty too, no matter what I said. She said that my career as a cop would be over, since no one else would take a "dirty" cop, and working alongside my father was by far my best option."
"I wasn't too keen on that idea, so she came right out and said that if I didn't do what she wanted, she wouldn't marry me. Said that she never intended to marry a cop, always thought that I'd grow out of my silly fantasies about playing cop and do what was right for our life together. As you can probably imagine, I didn't take too kindly to finding out that Wendy was a gold digger, especially because of what happened with Danny. I was a wreck. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. Then, out of nowhere, a federal agent offers me a new start, and says he and his boss don't care that my partner was dirty. Saved my life."
There was a pause, then, "Have I ever thanked you for that, boss?" Tony asked
"Every day, Tony. Every day." Gibbs replied with a fond smile.
