chapter 2
"How was school?" Esme asked as soon as we entered the house. I didn't bother to answer, I just went upstairs to my room. I didn't need to be paying attention to know that she had asked Alice about my behaviour. But Alice didn't have an answer; her brain was all muddled as she searched the future. Which meant a decision hadn't been made. "I just don't know," she answered, "I can't see." About an hour later Carlisle came home and knocked on the door. "Come in," I called. He opened the door and entered the room. He waited a bit to see if I would talk about what was on my mind - I didn't. "What's happened?" he asked. When I didn't give an answer he led me into his office. Once we were seated he took a deep breath, "alright Edward tell me everything." he prompted. "The new student, Hope Marshall" I began, his mind immediately turned to concern for the girl. "No she's fine" I said trying to stop the ideas rolling around in his head. "Then what's the problem?" "There's just something off about her." and without any more prompting I recited the entire story. Once I was finished he pondered my words for a while. When he finally answered he just told me he would try to find something out if he could. I went out hunting after that conversation, if Carlisle didn't know anything I didn't know how I would figure this out. Suddenly I heard a noise in the bushes and a quiet whisper. I chased after it but after miles of them avoiding me they disappeared, I took a look at my surroundings. I was in the middle of the woods a couple miles outside of town, but I was standing in front of a huge house, with a big garden and an easel on the front lawn. I couldn't hear anyone's mind but I could hear people inside it was weird. The door opened and a man and woman stepped out in the middle of a conversation. "I don't see why we're in this town of all places," he said. "It's a peaceful town," she answered. "We need to be back home, to New Orleans where we belong." he shot back. Then she lost her temper, "No we don't, Klaus, that place is way too chaotic, and I think our daughter needs some brand of normal in her life." he looked her dead in the eyes and said;"Hayley, I would think you would like to spend more time with you family in the Bayou, and I do believe Hope was doing just fine at the Salvatore school." Then he turned to face the trees where I was hidden. "Someone's here," he said. but Hayley stops him from going anywhere telling him that they couldn't make any kind of scene anymore. After I left I spent the rest of the week in the woods trying to understand anything. All I had really learned was the names of Hope's parents and that her father had one hell of a temper.
