chapter 3
I didn't go back to school for the rest of the week. All I did was go through every book I could find that might help solve the mystery that Hope and her family presented, because after hearing her parents' argument I knew they were in on whatever was going on with her. However after a week of searching with no results I couldn't stay home any longer. Besides, the best way to learn more is to talk to her. right? Not that it mattered. Not that she mattered. I went back to school the coming Monday and by the end of Sunday had convinced myself that Hope didn't matter, that it was all some kind of fluke or pipe dream. Only adding to this was the fact that the old truck was completely absent, even once lunch rolled around. But when I entered biology and took my seat she was seated in hers, her red hair blocking my view of what she was writing in her notebook. A couple minutes later she closed it and put it in her bag pulling out a textbook, she didn't say a word. "Hello", I finally spoke up. I know I said it didn't matter but when once again presented with the opportunity to figure out her mystery I just couldn't ignore it. "hi," was her short reply, then, "where were you?" "ill" was all I could come up with. she nodded, believing thing and turned to Mr. Banner who called the class to attention. He announced today's assignment as he handed out material. "Lady's first?" I asked. She took the microscope and looked inside for a minute then wrote the answer on the paper and handed it to me. I took a glance at the next slide and wrote it down before returning it. But I noticed that her penmanship was incredibly neat and rather pretty. It didn't take long before we were finished. Only after that did I speak up, "why did you move here?" I asked, maybe a little too bluntly. "what? oh, I umm, it was time" she mumbled. "What does that mean?" I inquired, though I couldn't help but think about how my family always moved after so long. Would it be so much of a stretch? The bell rang about twenty minutes later and Hope started to pack up her stuff hanging back a little. I didn't try to talk to her, after ten minutes of trying (and failing) to get anything out of her apart from that she used to live in New Orleans, which I already knew and that she had a big family (all living with her).
