A/N New chapter! Hope you enjoy it! I actually rewrote a lot of sections just before posting so I hope you like it.
It turned out that Jonathan had a similar distrust of Pitch and Emily because the thing that he'd been tinkering with in his hands was actually a device that allowed the two of them to listen in on a conversation.
Meaning they didn't have to be so close to them to hear what they were saying.
"- tell them about her?" They heard.
"You know what they would say, what they would do," Pitch argued. "Besides, she wouldn't do that."
"It's not like she was a stickler for the rules." Emily Jane argued. "She was constantly bending them."
"Yes. She bent them. She wouldn't outright break them," Pitch argued. "She wouldn't even take her daughter, why would she take Sarah?"
Jackie and Jonathan both froze at hearing Sarah's name.
Jackie recovered first and before Pitch and Emily could say another word she darted forward and encased Pitch's feet in ice.
"Ah, Jackie should have known you would be listening," Pitch said. "You have less reason to trust me than the guardians do."
"Jackie, let my father go." Emily hissed clouds started to appear around Emily dark and black, and the wind started to pick up.
"You know where Sarah is?" Jackie said ignoring Emily. Emily's eyes widened in anger at being ignored and raised her hands, but Pitch put a hand on her shoulder, giving her a look before turning back to Jackie. Almost reluctantly, Jane put her hands down.
"I don't," Pitch said attempting to pull his leg free. "I really, really don't."
"Right…" Jackie said with a scoff. "But you know who took her."
"I believe he said that the girl we were talking about would never kidnap someone," Emily said sounding cool while she waved a hand over Pitch's ice-encased foot. The ice melted which freed Pitch within seconds.
"Ok… so why bring her up at all?" Jonathan said.
Pitch sighed, "Because she knows Sarah." He said. "And she may not have kidnapped Sarah, but that doesn't mean she doesn't know something."
"If she knew something, wouldn't she come forward herself?" Jackie said, "Who is this she? Why does She know Sarah but I don't?"
Pitch looked at a lost for words and turned to his daughter for help.
"Her name is Jane." Emily Jane said. "And I can guess that the reason you don't know her is that Jane likely asked Sarah to keep her existence a secret."
"But why?" Jackie said sounding close to tears. "Sarah doesn't keep secrets, not from us."
"Because the people that Jane belongs to have been under constant suspicion of the guardians since their existence was realized," Pitch said. "I'm not about to add more suspicion based on the fact that I want to at least talk to them about a missing child."
"The
Guardians must have a reason for being so suspicious of these people," Jonathan
said.
"Yes. They don't understand and they've constantly refused to understand." Pitch said with a roll of his eyes.
Jackie remembered Sarah writing a letter to Santa only for Santa to give her coal for lying, and the Yetis refusing to let her mother and uncle Jamie into the workshop because they believed she was lying about having a child.
She hated to say it, but, there was precedent for thinking the guardians would think they know better than others and refuse to listen to anyone that challenged their limited worldview. Especially North and Bunny (There was a reason North, and Bunny were Sarah and Jackie's least favourite guardians after all).
She wasn't about to let Pitch get away with thinking he was right. "But why wouldn't she tell us, or just me." She said. "I'm not that close minded…" She asked before turning to Jonathan. "Am I?"
Pitch shook his head. "I can't tell you why, she never said anything," Pitch said. "Perhaps Sarah and Jane were concerned about what would happen if the secret accidentally got out."
Jackie rolled her eyes, "I can keep secrets. I've kept the fact that I'm a child of Jack Frost for years."
"Umm Jackie?" Jonathan said. "You froze your entire class once when your emotions got the best of you."
"Whose side are you on?" Jackie complained.
"Whatever side leads to me finding my sister." Jonathan retorted, leading Jackie to look a least a little contrite.
Jonathan turned to Jackie, "Who is this Jane? Why is she coming forward so dangerous for her?"
For a moment, Emily and Pitch stared at each other, a conversation passed between the two that Jackie didn't know how to interpret. Emily nodded to him. Pitch took a deep breath. "She's a Grim Reaper."
A/N and now Jackie and Jonathan know Sarah's secret.
