Argument

"I have to go with you," Sarah argued to Jane while Amelia watched at the doorway of Jane's room. "It's me he's after."

"Absolutely not," Jane said tossing her hair clip into the air, it twisted and elongated in the air before a scythe dropped into her hand. "I took you here to protect you if you go there now…"

"He'll either devour me or drag me to hell instead of my friends," Sarah argued with a shrug. "Fair trade-off."

"It's not," Jane told her. "No matter how you slice it, it's an innocent child being eaten or dragged into hell."

"Really?" Sarah challenged, "Are you prepared to risk your niece? Your brother?"

Jane stared at her for a long moment, "You were listening."

"Neither you nor Amelia were being quiet." Sarah said, "Are you ready to risk them?"

Jane glared at Sarah. "We'll be talking about you eavesdropping later," She said "I don't want to risk anyone, which is why I'm going to help. Stay here." Jane said as she hurried through her room picking up her cloak, and scythe. She tied her hair back up in a ponytail.

"You told me my friends and family would be safe," Sarah said her arms crossed in front of her.

"You told me…."

"I know," Jane said pinching the bridge of her nose. "I hadn't expected…" She started then stopped, "I had hoped that if Krampus could see you weren't around, he'd leave your family alone." She sighed. "I was wrong," Jane said.

"Jane made a lot of mistakes," Amelia said. She hadn't moved from the doorway and Jane turned to glare at Amelia, but Amelia continued unperturbed "But she's right, you getting yourself in trouble will just undo all the trouble Jane went through to get you here."

"But…" Sarah tried. "I can fight," Sarah turned to Jane "You taught me how to fight. I can manage myself."

"Not for this," Amelia told her. "I fought him 400 years ago, with just a decade of training under my belt, if it wasn't for the fact that as a grim, I regenerate. I'd likely be dead. You, with only 3 years of training, are not ready."

"What about Jane's charges?" Sarah asked Amelia while turning to Jane. "Dylan and Travis? They only have a few years under their belt. Are they fighting?"

"No, they're not," Jane said, "They're on patrol duty, they're to contact me or Amelia should they find Krampus and leave it to us."

"You expect them to obey?" Sarah asked skeptically. She'd met Dylan and Travis; they were reckless in ways that would make Jack Frost look timid. "More than that, now that Krampus has been found you expect them to stay out of the fight?"

"They will," Amelia said grinning in a way that showed all her teeth. "If they know what's good for them."

Sarah swallowed against her will. "Ok… but…"

Jane put a hand on Sarah's shoulder and gently guided her to the bed and sat her down, Jane knelt on the white cloud-like floor beside her. "Just trust me," Jane said. "Or if not me, trust the reaper who has fought Krampus before and succeeded." Jane gestured to Amelia "We can manage him."

Sarah closed her eyes and tears fell down her cheeks, she wanted to argue more, but she also knew that the longer she argued the later they'd be. So, almost against her will, she nodded. "I just…" Sarah said. "Please don't let him hurt anyone I love?" She said her voice high and reedy as she talked through her tears.

Jane paused for a moment before she smiled and ruffled the young teen's hair. "Of course, I will." She said before kissing her on the forehead. "Your friends and family will be safe." She promised.

"And reassure my family I'm ok," Sarah said. "Somehow, I know we're not supposed to but…."

"I will," Jane said with a gentle appeasing smile before opening a rift in space. Sarah could just make out North's workshop, but before she could even think to run up and through Jane walked through the rift and it closed behind her.

Sarah turned to Amelia, Amelia smiled knowingly before she turned and raised her voice. "Ella, Gretchen, Thomas."

Three reapers, who all looked to be only a few years older than her came in.

"This is Krampus' main target," Amelia said pointing to Sarah. "You are to make sure she doesn't try to escape."

Sarah's mouth fell open. "Amelia!" She complained.

Amelia smiled smugly. "I know what you're capable of," Amelia said. "I'm not about to leave you here by yourself where you can get into trouble.

"Why are watching Krampus' target, Krampus targets the naughty." A girl, with long blonde hair that was twisted back into a braid, said crossing her arms. "Shouldn't we just give her to him?"

"Gretchen." Amelia said sternly, "We don't work that way, and we don't decide where souls go. You know this"

"Besides." Said a cheerful redhead teen male who had to have been Thomas. "We would all be on the naughty list if we were alive. Or have you forgotten that being a Grim is a punishment?"

Gretchen 'hmphed' and looked away.

Which meant that the girl with shoulder-length brown hair and a shy expression was Ella. Ella didn't say anything to Sarah just waved shyly before hiding her hands back into her cloak.

That was another thing that changed, she could now see the reapers whether they were wearing their cloak or not. She didn't know if that was because she was in their home or if the

metaphysical pin prick had done more than just let her see the afterlives and made it so she could now see reapers regardless of what they were wearing.

Amelia looked at each of them, "Do try to be gentle with Sarah." She said. "She's scared for her family." Thomas, Ella, and Gretchen nodded (though it had taken Thomas elbowing Gretchen in the ribs to get Gretchen to do so.)

Amelia glared at them all for a long moment before she suddenly smiled. "Good." She said before she pulled off her broach and walked away flipping the broach in the air as she did so.
