Aurora Harris smiled, watching her two young daughters, Fern and Amaryllis play in a crystal clear stream. She knew she wouldn't be able to keep them with her forever, but she knew it would be at least a few more weeks until the darkness spread to their home. She would have to leave them, and die to protect them, and her home, but she knew they would be cared for on the other side of the door.
As she was lost in thought, six year old Fern ran over
"Mama, Lissa's not talking to me!" She complained.
"Why not?"
"Because I told her that there's nothing on the other side of the door."
The door was a strange landmark by their cottage that was an endless supply of fantasy to Lissa and endlessly frustrating to Fern, who was easily frustrated by things she couldn't understand. It was a single door, not connected to any wall. There seemed to be no point to the door that was apparent to the young girls.
"Of course there's something on the other side of the door Fern ,"
"But I've never seen it!"
As Alicia was talking she felt a stream of cold air blow over her. She shivered, and knew in that moment that the darkness had come.
"Amaryllis! Come here!" She called
Four year old Amaryllis, more commonly called Lissa, ran over, her blond curls bouncing with every step. The two sisters were nothing alike, from looks to personality.
Amaryllis seemed to find the magic in everything, and was constantly running off. She had blonde hair with bright clear blue eyes and fair skin.
Fern , however, was more level headed, stubborn and literal. She had black hair, light green emerald eyes and tan skin.
"Girls, I want you to run to the door, and unlock it with this key,a new run through. I love you both, Fern looks after your sister, and Lissa, never stop believing in magic." Alicia smiled sadly, giving Fern an old, slightly rusty key.
The two girls ran to the door, the light green door that seemed to stand in the middle of nowhere. Both girls were oblivious to what was happening or what was to happen.
Fern unlocked the door, and pulled Lissa through. Lissa was the only one who looked back and saw their mother walk into a cloud of dark green air.
As soon as they walked through the door, the key disintegrated, and the door swung shut behind them, disappearing into a cloud of pink and blue smoke.
Both girls' memories were lost with the door. The only thing they knew was that they were sisters, and they had nowhere to go.
