Exploring
With nothing better to do, and with a promise extracted that she wouldn't try to escape until the epiphany, Sarah decided to look around.
Jane and Amelia had left the room, both, unfortunately, had Reapers' duties to attend to but had promised that they would be back, after training and reaping.
Jane hadn't explicitly stated that she had to stay put, and as such Sarah didn't see the harm in looking around. So, with the bag of cookies still in her hand, and a note left on the pillow Sarah slipped out of the room.
She only got a few steps when she was spotted.
"Sarah!"
Sarah paused and turned around, her shoulders relaxing when she saw Dylan and Travis hurrying toward her. "Hey." She said with a smile. "What are you doing here?"
"You're smiling!" Dylan said, "What a beautiful sight to see."
"And we live here, you're the one we should be asking," Travis said, fiddling with a black ring on his finger, the form those two preferred their Scythe to have.
Sarah rolled her eyes even as she blushed. "Hush. You." She said pushing him away slightly. "And I meant outside Jane's room."
"Jane asked us to keep you company," Dylan said.
"On the stipulation that we don't let you talk us into helping you escape." Travis finished.
"Speaking of… what are you doing out and about? Not trying to escape, are you? Going to make us break our promise five seconds after we made it?"
Sarah rolled her eyes. "No." she said. "I promised I'd wait till the Epiphany."
Dylan and Travis looked at each other before staring back at her in surprise. "You're actually leaving it to the adults," Travis said.
"For the best, us adults can do better than her," Dylan said puffing his chest out.
"You two are barely adults," Sarah said crossing her arms. "You two have only been dead two years. And you two died when you were 16."
"More of an adult than you. Even accounting for the time lapsed island, your 16."
"Yes. More of an adult than the two idiots who thought jumping off a 100 feet cliff into the ocean was a good idea."
Dylan and Travis rolled their eyes, "Wow, attacking our stupid deaths, so original."
Sarah giggled, "Well yeah." Sarah said "You two have always been good-natured about your death. If I'm going to make fun of something, I want it to be something we're all going to laugh about later."
Dylan and Travis looked at each other and nodded. "We shouldn't be surprised that you picked something spicy to rib us about. Your favourite holiday is April fools."
"Hey, pranks are the best way to find out your friends' limits," Sarah said with a grin. "I stand by that. A good friend knows when and what to joke about. Knows their friends' limits, knows what is triggering and what isn't, and knows how to prank just enough to make them annoyed, but also laugh about it, years later."
"Thin line."
"But the one I relish walking," Sarah said before she frowned. "Or… I used to; I haven't participated in April Fools in years."
"Maybe you should in the coming April," Travis said, with Dylan nodding beside him. "Like, how would you prank Jackie."
"I wouldn't," Sarah said. "Jackie hates pranks, she doesn't like being tricked."
Dylan pursed his lips and nodded in thought. "Ok… Jonathan."
Sarah looked up and slowly a grin spread across her face. "Oh, that's easy!" Sarah said looking eager. "Sneak into his room and make it so that his phone goes off at all hours, with a song, he finds annoying but will make him laugh. Doesn't destroy any of his passions but will mildly annoy him."
Dylan and Travis laughed, "Fair enough. Though you never explained what you're doing out of Jane's room.
"Looking around. If I'm going to be stuck here for 12 days, I thought it be nice to look around."
Dylan and Travis looked at each other and smiled. "Well in that case." Travis said holding out his elbow, "Would you mind if we showed you around miss?" Travis said pretending to take on a posh British accent.
Sarah grinned and nodded. "I would love it." She said, curtsying in her dress.
"That dress does look lovely."
Sarah rolled her eyes, "Yes, lovely, after I slept in it."
"You can barely tell," Dylan said.
Sarah rolled her eyes amused. "Come on." She said. "You promised you would show me around.
Was that a lie too?"
They showed her the gate first, where many Reapers were milling around speaking to people on the other side. Sarah didn't feel drawn to it, but Travis and Dylan assured her that she would when she died, and when she people she knew and loved on the other side.
After that they went inside.
Dylan and Travis showed her around and showed her the living room; a giant common area, with several couches and chairs.
There were tables with chess sets, and cards. Even a tv where a bunch of reapers were milling around was playing, "It's a Wonderful Life."
Dylan and Travis noticed her staring. "Yeah, this room changes depending on the era," Dylan said. "According to Jane, they came out of their room one day with a TV playing. Sometimes it's used to convey important news."
Sarah stared at the TV for a long moment before the twins pulled her away.
"There's no kitchen," Dylan said, eying the cookie bag in Sarah's hand that she was taking a cookie out of. "We don't eat. Don't really need to, and no real desire to."
Sarah nodded chewing on her cookie, then she tilted her head. "Then… where'd the cookies come from?"
"The living world." Dylan and Travis said together as though it was the most obvious thing in the universe.
Sarah blushed at the answer to her dumb question. "Fair enough."
"Not that we can't eat," Dylan said putting his hand in her bag, grinning while Sarah glared at him, and placing the cookie into his mouth. "We just don't need to or feel side effects when we don't."
Sarah nodded, interested. "Do you think I'd make a good grim?"
Travis and Dylan stared at each other, before turning to Sarah, "It's not that kind of choice." Travis said softly. It was the most serious she'd even seen the two of them act.
"And trust me, it's not all fun and games. There's a reason why this is considered a punishment." Dylan said.
"You find our deaths funny, and they are… least from our perspective," Dylan said. "But even in our short lives, we've seen things…"
"Horrifying things."
"Things that give you nightmares, not everyone dies, laughing, or smiling or at peace. Many die scared, frightened and alone."
"It's a hard job." Dylan said, "And not one I would have chosen for myself."
"And it's not a life," Travis said. "You would have to leave everyone you love behind."
Sarah stared at them, and she looked down. "Oh."
For a moment they said nothing then she felt them place her hands on her shoulders. "Come on. We have the perfect place we want to show you next."
Curious she followed them, beyond giant white double doors, they grinned at her, and she stepped in, and her eyes widened.
It was the training room. It had to be. It was huge, and mats were everywhere. Dummies were scattered everywhere in the room.
She stared at them, and they smiled.
"We figured it was either this or the ballroom." Dylan said, "Come on." He said grabbing her hand. "Let's go find ourselves some weapons; we can spar, and help you get your anxiety out."
Sarah smiled, and she followed them to a door on the other side of the room, and this was where her eyes really widened. Every single weapon known to mankind had been placed in the room.
"Are these all scythes?"
"No. Most of these are just training weapons, you don't want to cut yourself on a scythe." Dylan explained. "Come on, let's pick you a good training weapon, made of wood." He said, and the fact that he had to specify reminded her that even though he'd once been human he no longer was, and in fact was much more durable than she was.
"Yeah, I don't want to bleed too much." Sarah joked.
It hadn't taken them long, there weren't many choices made from the safer materials. She grabbed a staff. It was a little heavy but was a much better weight than some of the other staffs there.
Dylan and Travis picked up staffs as well and they grinned, before making their way to the door, but before they could exit it, they heard noises coming from the other side.

A/N Hope you enjoyed it! Please feel to tell me what you thought worked and what didn't.
Travis and Dylan have met before. May do a one shot detailing their first meeting. Might not depends on the mood.
