Hippolyta, queen of the amazons, was jolted awake from sleep deep into the night. She didn't know what awoke her until she focused on the thrum or power in the air, sharp and, dare she say it, godlike. But that was impossible, the gods had cut themselves off from the mortal world millennia ago, so why would they break their pact now? Not to mention, this thrum of power felt familiar, but… it wasn't exactly right, as if there was a key part missing from it all.
Fluidly standing, Hippolyta rushed outside her chambers to a balcony to fly herself to the beaches, intent on figuring out what exactly awoke her, when she was joined by her daughter, Diana. The princess sidled up to her Queen and mother, looking as confused as the sovereign felt. "Mother? So, you felt it too?" Diana's brow had furrowed in concern. Hippolyta nodded. "Yes, a god has decided to grace us with their presence tonight. However, the question is, who or what could it be?"
Quickly arriving at the white sands of Themyscira, the two women halted at the sight in front of them- a large, massive form covered in dark, teal-blue scales and a stain of dark liquid rapidly coloring the sand around it, growling lowly and in clear pain. The massive feathery and leathery wings on the spiked back, along with the horns and scales gave away what this being was, but that was even more impossible than one of the Olympians appearing, for these beasts were said to have gone extinct longer than the gods had been alive…
It was a Dragon.
The two Amazonians shared an alarmed look between each other before they both descended cautiously, Diana silently telling her mother to stay at a safe distance away from the beast, for they had no idea what reaction could be garnered from speaking to it. The moment Diana's feet touched the ground, the dragon's head scraped the sand to point at the Amazonian, and two eyes of the richest green she had ever seen opened to stare blearily at her. The black horns gave off a dull glow, one that was pulsing rhythmically, but even then, both Amazonians could see the rate of pulses growing farther and farther between each other. the creature let out a pained rumble that tapered into a whine, it's wings hugging it's wounded side protectively as its massive talons seemed to be clamped around something... even so, it was evident what was happening.
This creature was dying.
"Who did this to you?" Diana asked herself gently, reaching out to press a gentle hand against the warn, scaly muzzle. The dragon blinked before a worn-out chuckle rumbled from it. "Humans who fear what they cannot understand," he said. "My mate has already passed into the ether, but she tasked me with a duty that I will see through to my coming last breath," the dragon extended a claw the size of the Invisible Jet to Diana, the talons trembling before alighting onto the sand once more with barely any disruption. A small form the size of an infant, stubby wings and black silky hair lay sleeping soundly on the sands of Themyscira. Little black horns, dark midnight-blue scales, and a tail with two small fins extended from the tiny humanoid body.
"This is my sworn duty as a Sire and a Mate… I had to get our Scion to a safety… please, keep him safe…" Hippolyta stepped into view, her usually hard eyes widening at the sleeping human-dragon hybrid sleeping on the sands. "Was his mother-." "Human?" the dragon finished, his breathing hitching as he coughed on the blood in his throat. "Yes, she was. The most beautiful female to ever grace this world and filled with the hope that the battle we fought would end in peace… promise me you will protect him, female…! Please, teach him how to survive in my stead!"
Hippolyta's eyes softened when the baby gave a quiet coo and opened his eyes, which, unlike his father's, were a shifting sea of greens, changing like the rustling leaves of an ancient forest. The plea this mighty creature gave was so profound, his tone so urgent, that she didn't have the heart to turn him away. "On my word as princess of the Amazons," Diana said, placing a hand on her heart in oath. "I promise your child will be the strongest being to fly in the skies and walk on this earth with our teaching." Stubby, clawed hands reaching up to grab blindly at his father's claw, and the giant male's scaly lips, now tinged with blood the more he spoke, quirked up into a smile as he raised his claw carefully to touch to his son's own hands.
"Thank you, Princess of the Amazonians…" the large green eyes of the dragon grew even hazier, but no less filled with love and pride as he stared at his hatchling. "Little Azzon… remember the strength you carry, and the legacy you now bear… we will always be watching… our little Skyking…"
The great dragon, having crashed landed in a desperate bid to save his child, finally drew his last breath, and passed, staring at the life he had helped create with the love no one who is not a parent could comprehend.
The pulsing of the dragon's horns slowed, then stopped fully, and silence fell over the white sands. Bending over, Diana gently picked up the cooing infant hybrid, careful of his tail and wings. "What do we do now, Mother?" she asked, stroking the fluff on the baby's head to calm him. Hippolyta closed her eyes in respect to the fallen dragon before turning to her daughter. "Now, we raise the child as one of our own. He will know of his past from what we know, and we will raise him to look to the future." Diana turned to look at the dead dragon, noticing the peaceful look on his face.
"The dragon said his name was Azzon…" she said. Hippolyta nodded. "Then Azzon he shall remain."
Diana thought back to hearing storues of mortal children from the World of Man; as Amazonians were made fully grown from the clay and fire of gods and Themysciran soil, they had no knowledge in raising a true infant… it doesn't mean they wouldn't try, though. And with Diana's excursions into the World of Man going longer and longer, she could help learn as well.
"Mother," Diana said suddenly. "I wish to have Azzon as my own child." Hippolyta's eyes narrowed in concern. "Are you sure, my daughter?" she asked. "This isn't an infant from the World of Man like the one the pilot saved. This is a whole different being entirely." Diana's eyes were filled with resolve as she looked back at her mother. "I am sure."
"Then my blessings be upon you and your new son, Diana." And with that, the two Amazonians made the decision, and with this decision, changed the world in a way a certain Dark Knight of Gotham, or a Man of Steel never could…
For the story of Azzon, had now begun.
