Later that night, Natsu was pacing around his bedroom, running his hands repeatedly through his hair, wearing a stress track in the carpet. His younger sister, Wendy, sat on his bed snickering at him, watching him nearly pull his hair out in stress.
"It's not funny!" he whined to his sister.
"I think it's pretty funny." She giggled some more. "It's just a text message. Why are you freaking out about this?"
"'Cause I just saw her a few hours ago! What if it's too soon? What if she thinks I'm clingy?"
"Natsu, most girls actually want guys to talk to them, have conversations with them. She agreed to go on a date with you. She'd be thrilled you still want to talk her."
"But if I talk to her tonight, what are we gonna talk about tomorrow?"
"Trust me, Big Bro, you're gonna have stuff to talk about." She deadpanned. "Besides, again, it's just a text message." Natsu clenched his fists and squeezed his eyes shut before taking a peek at the stress-inducing device laying seemingly innocent on the desk as if it didn't know it was putting its owner through a cardiac arrest. He eyed it with fear in his eyes as if he expected it to explode any minute. As if sensing his distress, the phone lit up and new ringtone was playing from its speakers. Natsu screamed while Wendy stared at her brother with an eyebrow lifted, both for his outburst and the obviously feminine ringtone playing from his phone. Immediately, he started panicking.
"It's Lucy! Oh my God, she's actually calling me!" he yelled, with a horrified look on his face.
"Really? Princess Peach's birthday cake ringtone?"
"What do I do?" he asked, not acknowledging his sister's question due to his manic state. She's pretty sure her question didn't even register in his mind.
"Hurry, quick! Give me your phone! I have an idea!" she commanded, pretending to enter the same panicked state her brother was in. Not thinking clearly and without hesitation, Natsu tossed the phone to Wendy. She immediately swiped the green button and answered.
"Hi Lucy! This is Wendy, Natsu's little sister."
"WHATT?! NO!" Natsu screamed and made a lunge for his sister. She easily side-stepped him as he fell on the bed. She dashed out the door, up the hall and down the stairs to the living room. She quickly put the call on speaker.
"O-oh! Hi, Wendy. Nice to meet you, kinda." The blonde giggled through the phone.
"Wendy!" Natsu shouted from the staircase, his footsteps thundering.
"Natsu said you were sooo pretty," she said, putting emphasis on the word 'so'. "He hasn't stopped talking about you since he's been home."
"SHUT UP, WENDY!" Natsu's face was so flushed there was almost steam coming from his ears. Lucy laughed.
"Is that so?" she asked.
"He even has a Princess Peach ringtone for you already!" Wendy snickered.
"Don't listen to her, Lucy!" Natsu called as he chased his sister around the living room. The blonde sniggered as she imagined the scene taking place. She could hear Wendy's breathy giggles and Natsu's grunts as he tried to maneuver around the furniture.
"He couldn't stop gushing over how long and shiny your hair was or how sparkly your eyes were." Horrified, Natsu briefly froze before screaming.
"OH MY GOD, WENDY! STOP TALKING!" He made another effort to cut her off at the couch but Wendy evaded him again by jumping over the back of it.
"I even heard him talking to Gray about how soft your big boobs looked." Natsu stood mortified, his face in flames before he bellowed.
"I. DID. NOT!" He leapt over the couch he was chasing his sister around and she, mercifully, let him have his phone back before heading back upstairs. Natsu snatched it from her hands and collapsed on the couch, turned the speaker off and threw his right arm over his face before putting the phone to his ear.
"I am SO sorry about her." He mumbled. Lucy laughed at his obvious embarrassment.
"It's not a big deal, I think it's cute."
"Maybe for you. You weren't supposed to know about any of that stuff."
"Even about how soft my boobs are?"
"I did NOT say that." He defended himself, though his blush returned. "I may have thought it though." He said quietly. Lucy chuckled. "So, what's up? I was just about to text you for your address."
"No, he wasn't! He was freaking out in his room!" a voice betrayed him yet again from the top of the steps.
"I swear to God, Wendy, the next time I see Romeo, you are in for it!" An 'eep!' and a slammed door finally gave Natsu some peace of mind. "Sorry, again."
"It's fine. You guys love each other. It's what siblings are supposed to do." She said with sincerity in her voice.
"Yeah, she's alright." The pinkette resigned fondly.
"Soooo, I just wanted to tell you again that I really liked hanging out with you guys today. I had a lot of fun. I can't wait to do it again." She told him. Natsu's gut twisted a bit. Was spending time alone with him making her uncomfortable? Was she going to cancel the date? "And I'm really excited to spend time with you tomorrow." And just like that, his heart sped up.
"Yeah, me, too! But you didn't have to call me for that. You could have just texted me." He assured her.
"I-I know but," she paused before continuing lowly. "I like the sound of your voice." Natsu couldn't help but have his ego stroked and decided to tease her a bit. He dropped his voice to a low and gravely octave.
"Oh, really?" Lucy was so glad they weren't video chatting right now. His tone sent goosebumps up her arms and a shiver up her back.
"Oh, stop, you." She pouted through the line. The male chuckled.
"I like the sound of your voice, too." He said genuinely. "Especially your laugh. It makes me happy." There was a comfortable silence between the two before she spoke again.
"So, I just kinda wanted to talk about what you had in mind for tomorrow?"
"Well, I was gonna pick you up for breakfast. There's this awesome diner in town that you'll love. Then I would take you to see everything; the places you need to know and the places that are fun to know."
"Do the fun places include a movie theatre?"
"The fun places can definitely include a movie theatre." Natsu was already getting ideas. Friendly ideas. Mostly. Her musical giggle interrupted his musings.
"Sounds like a good time. Maybe dinner after?"
"You're reading my mind. I'm getting fired up just thinking about it." There was a beat of silence before the double entendre of what he just said registered in his mind. "Oh my God. I did not mean it like that!" he pouted when he heard the Lucy's laughter.
"You said it, not me." She chuckled. "But I'm really excited, too. I'll go ahead and let you go. I'm gonna grab dinner and a shower before bed. See you tomorrow! Night!"
"Night, Lucy." He replied before the call disconnected. He placed his phone on his chest and tucked his arms behind his head as he stared up at the ceiling. His heart felt lighter than it had in a long time. Suddenly, his phone vibrated with the notice of an incoming text message. He opened it up with a smile seeing that it was from Lucy. It was her address. Confusion spread across his features before shock took over. "Wait. SHE'S NEXT DOOR?!"
