Getting Back
It took Will and Jonathan more time than they would have liked hobbling to the Jessup residence.
"I hate your sister." Will hissed.
"No, you don't," Jonathan said teeth clenching from the pain. "Her stubbornness is exactly what you love about her."
Will didn't bother to deny it. "She's walking to her death." Will said, "And she knows it, she's going to get herself killed."
"I know." Jonathan said, "But she's right, neither of us is of use, not when I have a broken leg and you…"
Will huffed "I can still be of use."
"With what?" Jonathan said, "Krampus took any weapon you had when he kidnapped you didn't, he?"
"Like Sarah would have abandoned us, if she hadn't had a weapon," Will muttered.
Jonathan laughed and then hissed as he put too much pressure on his leg. Will looked at him concerned, but they couldn't stop, they had to keep going, to get the proper help for Sarah and Jackie.
Fortunately, they came across Jack speaking to a young woman he was levitating in the already ready to fly off. "Jack!" They called to him.
Jack and the woman turned, and their eyes widened Jack flew toward him. "Jonathan? Will?" He said visibly relieved. "Thank goodness." He said. He looked at Jonathan, at the dried blood on his face, and the fact that he was quite clearly leaning on William for support. "What happened to you? Let's get you inside."
"I put up a fight." Jonathan said trying to grin through the pain, "The other guy put up a bigger one."
Jack looked at Jonathan, then turned to the woman behind him "Hey, Amelia, can you help me get them inside?"
Amelia stepped forward, "Come on." She said picking, "You can explain what happened." She said softly.
"Sarah did what?" Amelia cried burying her face in her hands.
"Really?" Jack asked. "That's what you have an issue with? She pricked them with Jane's scythe?"
The adults all looked at her expectantly, Jessica and Nicholas in particular were glaring at her. Sophie just tilted her head, curious.
Sophie had come in within moments of Jonathan and Will's return, after looking throughout all of Burgess, she'd only come in after Jack had told her that they knew where Jackie and Sarah were.
"You misunderstand," Amelia said before anyone could say anything. "What Sarah did was dangerous, if she gave too big a cut, or their heart stops beating their souls will be cut from their bodies. Meaning CPR or the moon won't be able to save them."
"And Jane did that to my daughter." Jessica hissed.
"It's healable," Amelia said quickly. "We always planned to heal Sarah when we returned her."
Sophie stepped in, "Can you heal them?"
"I can." Amelia said she stood up and held her hand out, "Where exactly did she prick you?"
"My index finger," Will said holding it out to her. "How exactly do you-"
Amelia held Will's finger and stared at it for a long moment, she pulled out her scythe and pressed it to his finger. She closed her eyes, and the scythe glowed a blinding white. When the light died down, Will felt different, a better connection to his body that he hadn't realized had been missing since Sarah had pricked him with the pin.
"Woah."
"A scythe-made cut can only be healed with a scythe. Though thankfully it doesn't have to be from the same scythe that did the cutting." Amelia turned to Jonathan. "Your turn," Amelia said.
"Will this heal my leg?"
Amelia shook her head, "The scythe only heals and injures the soul's connection to the body. That's it." She pressed the flat of the scythe blade to his fingers
"But my soul is still connected."
"Because it was just a pinprick," Amelia said closing her eyes while the scythe glowed white again, "Had you been cut any deeper you're soul would have disconnected. The only danger a pinprick presents is if your heart stops beating, no amount of CPR will bring you back. The bigger the cut, the more dangerous." The white light died down.
"Have you ever…"
"Cut someone with my scythe accidentally." Amelia nodded, "Usually we heal them quickly, so no harm is done."
"As fascinating as this is." Nicholas said, "Do you two boys know where our daughters are?" Nicholas said gesturing to himself and Jack Frost who Amelia had just noticed was looking more and more anxious.
"The Burgess Mine caves," Will said. "He wanted to stay close, to better take children that Sarah likely knew and would be drawn to help."
Amelia and Jack looked at each other, they had been close in their reason. Jack grabbed his staff.
"I think something happened to your dagger," Will said, remembering how the moonbeam had entered the cavern while Sarah had been trying to convince them to leave. "I'm sorry."
As worrying as that was, and as sad as it was that he might not have the moonbeam any more, he had more pressing issues. "I'll deal with that later. We have children to save."
He did not notice Will opening his mouth, before closing it again.
