A/N: Truthfully, I had not planned on writing any Christmas fics this year (I love Christmas stories, but I didn't want to give myself more tasks haha). However, I made a poorly worded Instagram post that some people took to mean I would be posting Ga Eul/Rang Christmas stories (I meant I would post some Rang Christmas collages). Anyway, I felt bad for getting people's hopes up, so I decided to at least put together one story. It's a short one, but it takes place during Ga Eul and Rang's first date in Chapter 12 of I'd Eat Your Heart.
Enjoy this one-shot caused by my poor word choices! :D
All night, Ga Eul had been taking pictures with the Christmas lights surrounding Lotte World Tower. Presently, she was making finger hearts in front of a well-lit tree while Rang snapped her photo. He would have protested about becoming her photographer, but since it was their first date, and he wanted a second one, he was trying not to complain too much. Besides, she'd been taking pictures with him too, and he couldn't complain about that. Also, she had such a dazzling, genuine smile that he felt warmer just looking at her. Odd, since it was extremely cold out.
Happily taking her phone back from him, Ga Eul scrolled through the photos he'd just taken. Rang peered over her shoulder, noting how cute she looked, even in the pictures she quickly rejected and deleted.
"Why do humans take so many photos?" Rang asked.
"Hmm?" Ga Eul glanced up at him. Suddenly, their faces were inches from one another. They stared at each other, their eyes drifting over each other's faces, until a baby cried near them.
Ga Eul lowered her chin, and Rang straightened up.
"Oh," she said. "You asked why we take so many photos. It's because we want to remember a lot of things, but we can't remember all of them, so our pictures are like souvenirs to remind us of where we were before. Don't you ever have moments you want to live in forever?" Ga Eul turned to face him, tucking her phone into her coat pocket.
"No," he answered. "When you've lived as long as I have, all moments are the same."
Ga Eul frowned.
"But surely, you must have some moments of your life that you've liked more than others."
"Even so, taking a picture won't actually make the moment last longer." He gestured to the pocket where her phone rested. "The world goes on whether we want it to or not."
There's no point in liking some moments more than others. Everything disappears, especially people.
Ga Eul nodded.
"I suppose that's true. But still, I think it's worth trying to remember anyway. If you're sad about a moment being gone, you can at least look at a picture of it and feel some happiness. It's bittersweet, but it's better than nothing at all." She pulled her phone back out. "That's why I like photography. Now smile." She grinned and aimed her phone camera at him.
"You said the last photo of me was the last one."
"But the background's so perfect here! Look at all the different decorations in the background."
"No." Rang crossed his arms. "That last photo was the last photo."
"Please." Ga Eul made a pleading face that was cuter than it should have been.
"No."
"Fine." She glanced at her phone, then back up at Rang, and smiled. "Took it."
Rang blinked.
Turning her phone around so he could see the screen, Ga Eul said, "I'm glad I took this one. It really looks like you." She giggled. "Stubborn and annoyed."
"You—"
"Sorry, I shouldn't have said that." Ga Eul slapped her hand over her mouth, but he could tell she was still laughing behind it.
"Hey! Don't you know what happens when you insult a nine-tailed fox?"
Ga Eul shook her head as Rang stalked up to her. He tried to appear menacing, but must have been failing, given that Ga Eul was smiling. He could see the amusement in her eyes. Instead of being more annoyed, though, he kind of liked that she wasn't taking him too seriously. It was different from the way other people looked at him, with distrust even if they weren't scared.
He had been going to say something about debts or organs being eaten, but instead he snatched her phone.
"You get all of your pictures deleted!" he announced, running away.
"What?! Hey! Come back!" Ga Eul chased after him.
Rang ducked behind one of the small stores set up below the tower, then rushed out into the open space with more decorations, dodging around the other couples and families gathered there. Ga Eul followed him, but she was no match for his speed, even though he wasn't using his fox capabilities. He could have easily outrun her forever, but as he fully intended to return her phone and, of course, resume their date, he eventually stopped and allowed her to catch him.
"Give me that," she demanded, snatching her phone.
"Do you know that even for a human you are incredibly slow?" Rang commented. Ga Eul was winded at this point and bent over from exertion, whereas he stood straight and tall, breathing quite normally.
Ga Eul's eyes widened. She straightened, still breathing erratically.
"Do you know that even for a fox you are incredibly rude?"
Rang chuckled.
"I know I'm rude, but do you know how slow you are?"
Ga Eul raised her eyebrows. She didn't answer, but she eyed him suspiciously as she scrolled through her photos to confirm that they were all there.
They were, of course, though she'd taken so many that he doubted she would notice if he deleted a random one or two.
"I'm going to head over there," Ga Eul announced after a moment, indicating a crescent moon light display a short distance away. "You can follow me if you want," she continued. She took off in the direction of the display without waiting for Rang's reply, seeming to take for granted that he would just follow her.
Well, he supposed in this particular case, she wasn't wrong.
When Rang caught up to her, she was inspecting the display so that he had a nice view of her profile, illuminated by the golden light. She was smiling again, her face lit up like a child's, and he suddenly thought it would make a beautiful picture—her standing there in her lavender coat, lit by the ridiculously large moon. Her hair shone, and the purple gemstones in her butterfly earrings sparkled. Her cheeks remained flushed from where she'd run after him.
Don't you ever have moments you want to live in forever?
Rang unlocked his phone and snapped a picture of Ga Eul, then dropped his hand back down in the split second it took for her to look over and lock eyes with him.
Don't you ever have moments you want to live in forever?
Not really, but...this one would be nice.
