Elijah found Niklaus walking down the street, raging hard. He isn't sure if he can calm him down but he has to try, he may only have met little Kairi, but he feels protective of his daughter already.
"Niklaus." Elijah said, calling out to his brother. But he did not stop, nor slow down for him.
"It's a trick, Elijah."
"No, brother. They're gifts." he said to him, he finally stopped walking. "It's your chance, it's our chance."
Niklaus finally turns around to face him with tears in his eyes. "To what?"
"To start over. Take back everything we lost, everything that was taken from us. Niklaus, our own parents came to despise us. Our family was ruined." he said as he stepped closer to him. "We were ruined and since then, all that you have ever wanted, all that we have ever wanted…was a family."
He comes to him, licking his lips. "I will not be manipulated." he said, turning around.
Elijah goes in front of him, he will not let his brother walk away from this, not from Hayley and her baby nor from his niece.
"So they're manipulating you, so what? With them, this girl and her child, your child, also with my child, your niece…live." Elijah told him, he'll tell him what he had sensed from Kairi later.
If anyone can know what Kairi is feeling and going through, it isn't only him but Niklaus.
They have to bring her back from her deep fear, to be the girl he knows is so buried deeply under the ocean of fear and whatever traumatic things she has gone through in her short life.
"I'm gonna kill every last one of them." Niklaus told him, pushing him and turning around.
Elijah goes in front of him again, he'll keep talking to him until he gets through to his brother, even if it's the last thing he'll ever do, for his and Sky's child's sake.
"Then what? Then you return to Mystic falls to resume your life as the hated one? As the evil Hybrid? Is it so important to you that people quake with fear at the sound of your name? I know you loved Sky as a sister, Niklaus. Tell me…." he said, if he has to use his mate in order to get through to him, then he will. "If Sky was here right now, what do you think she'll say to you, knowing that you would abandon her child, our child just for petty revenge?"
"People quake with fear because I have the power to make them afraid. What will these children offer me? Will it guarantee me power? And Sky is dead, Elijah! You need to remember that. That girl, she is not her, she is not Sky nor she ever will be."
"Family is power, Niklaus. Love, loyalty, that's power. This is what we swore to one another a thousand years ago before life tore away what little humanity you had left. Before ego, before anger, before parabola created in this person before me…someone I can barely even recognize as my own brother." Elijah said, he steps closer to him. "I know Kairi isn't Sky, Sky….she was, she was confident, Kairi is not, Kairi is a fearful and withdrawn young girl who desperately needs a family, she needs her family to lead her out of whatever dark place has beaten her into submission. If Sky were here, she would be heartbroken to see her daughter in such a state, that her uncle would not do as much to help her as I will be doing. Sky…would be disappointed in you, Niklaus."
That had been a bit harsh about Sky but Elijah knew Sky inside and out, she certainly would be disappointed in Niklaus for not helping their daughter when she needs her real family by her side, saving her from her torments.
"This is us. The Original family. We remain together, always and forever. I am asking you to stay here, I will help you and I will stand by you. I will be your brother." He said, praying that he is getting through to him. "We will build a home here together. So, save this girl. Save your child, save your niece, my daughter, Sky's daughter."
He actually thought, for a moment, that he was getting through to him but…as Niklaus place a hand on his shoulder just as he had done with him.
"No." Niklaus, then walks away from him.
Elijah sighed, disappointed. He returns to the graveyard, he sees Kairi again outside, praying again. He knelt down touching her shoulder which made her flinch and fall back, she backed away, her arm covering her face as her body shakes in fear.
His heart broke into pieces as he knew that she had gone through something horrible and very traumatizing.
"Don't hurt me, please." she said.
"Kairi, it's me, sweetheart." he said, she peeks from her arm.
"I'm sorry, I should've let you know beforehand." he said, he kept a safe distance away, not wanting to scare her even more.
She didn't say anything. "Is it okay if I give you a hug?" he asked.
She shakes her head as tears go down her face, her cheeks flushing with humiliation. "Can I at least touch your hand?"
Again, she shakes her head. He didn't know what to do, she didn't want any kind of comforting touch from him. How was he going to be able to do this with her without her fearing any kind of touch?
'I thought she was trusting me a little,' he thought.
"Kairi…you have my word, I would never, ever hurt you nor do anything you're not comfortable with. I just want to be the father you deserve. I do not know what you've gone through, little one. But I swear, I would never hurt you."
She looks at him, as she lowers her arm from her face, her brown eyes searching his, obviously trying to decide whether to believe his words or not.
"I will not break my word, Kairi." he said.
"Pr-promise?" she stutters nervously.
"I promise. Can I at least help you up?" he said.
She nods silently, he takes her hand and helps her to her feet, dusting her shoulders off. It took all of his willpower not to hug her or give a small peck to her forehead but he needs her trust first.
So he turned around until her voice spoke up again.
"What was she like?"
He turns to her shock, he wasn't expecting a question from her. "Your mother?"
She nods. "I don't remember much about her."
His heart broke at this, Sky had been a wonderful woman, mate to him. No matter what he brought with him, she'd loved him all the same. She had been brave and loyal. Half of the times he didn't know what he would do without her.
"She was brave, loyal and she loved singing and playing the piano. Of course, she didn't let people push her down, if they tried…well, let's say, they'd better start praying."
Her mouth twitched, it was hopefully a smile.
"What else can I tell you about her? Oh, yes. We met at the mayor's party, she was there playing the piano, not a care in the world. After her performance, Niklaus and your aunt, Rebekah had commented on her performance and all she did was smile, saying, ``whatever."
She gives a small smile. "That was a bit rude."
He laughs. "Indeed. Of course, Niklaus thought it was hilarious and asked her to dance. She just shrugs her shoulders, saying, ``as you wish, Jaime Lannister."
Kairi snorts in amusement. "I take it my mom…?"
"Yes, your mother was a big fan of the books, I just regret that she hasn't seen the tv show of it. She would've loved it, not sure on the ending though." he said.
She nods, smiling faintly. "I haven't seen it."
"Well, we can watch it together," he said.
She nods. "Um…when did…?"
"Ah, yes. After your uncle Niklaus danced with her, she asked me if I wanted to dance. Of course, I said yes. We danced the night away as we talked." he said.
She nods, but Kairi says nothing after that.
"Of course, I did not tell her of us being the original vampire family. I did not wanted to scare your mother away. But I bump into her in the library the following day." he said.
"What did you do?" she asked quietly.
"Well, we looked for each book we were after at the time, but after that, we'd gone to a small cafe, she had hot chocolate, said it was her favorite and screw anyone who says different." he said, laughing softly as he got lost in the memory. "Your mother was a stubborn woman but that's what I loved about her."
She gives a small smile at this, but again, she says nothing. But she looks ready to say something else but the moment passes as she looks behind him, he turns to see Sophie Deveruax, frowning at them.
"Well?"
"Let's talk back in the crypt." he said.
They went back, even though Kairi looks like she wants to be anywhere but there.
"Wait here. I'll talk to them." said Sophie.
"Kairi." he said taking her hand as Sophie went in, he kept sure to hear what they were saying though.
She flinches from him, his undead heart broken once again. He knows it isn't going to be easy to win her trust, she may be beginning to trust him somewhat but he has a long road to win it completely.
"Is there a reason you're afraid of Sophie Deveruax and the witches or is it something else?" he asked.
Kairi shakes her head. "I-it's nothing."
He sighed, she was too frightened to discuss this with him here and now, have they hurt her or threatened her to silence? Or has she had a hard life and difficult childhood? It's hard to tell.
"I think we both know that's a lie but if you do not want to talk about it, I promise I won't force you until you're ready." he said, gently. "But also know, I would never hurt you."
She nods. "Th-thank you."
He nods and they get into the crypt just to hear some of the witches talking.
"How can you know that you can control the hybrid?"
"She can't." he said as he pushed from where he was leaning on, walking to her. "Not entirely certain that I can, either. But now that your coven has drawn his ire, I have a question, maybe two."
The witches said nothing to him. So he continues with his questions. But if….any of the witches has forced or even hurt a pretty little hand on his daughter's head, he will not be responsible for his own actions.
"What prevents my daughter from murdering you instead of cooperating?" he asked them.
Sophie then goes to get a needle and pricks herself with it.
"Ow! What the hell?" Hayley asked her.
He looked at his daughter, she didn't say anything, like she was used to this. He goes to her and takes her hand to see blood where Sophie Deveruax had picked herself with the needle.
"The spell my sister performed, the one that got her killed, it didn't just confirm the pregnancy or the father test, it linked me to Hayley and Kairi. So anything that happens to me, happens to them, slower to Kairi with her vampirism, mutation and her demigoddess stuff but it will happen to her. Which means their life is in my hands."
He screws his eyes at her, wondering if she has more to say. "Klaus may not care about his own child or his niece, but it's very clear what it already means to you…if I have to hurt Hayley and Kairi, or worse to ensure that I have your attention, I will." she said.
He steps forwards, smiling. "You would dare threaten an Original?"
"I have nothing to lose. You have until midnight to get Klaus to change his mind. Now what was your other question?"
He shakes his head and looks at Kairi, who had said nothing at all during this. But she does look frightened.
"Why…does my daughter look afraid? I will not have her threaten to silence, her mother certainly would not put up with it, either."
"We've done nothing to her, she can be a tattle tale sometimes, even her adoptive father had said as much. She can be a liar." Sophie said with venom.
He looks at Kairi to see her looking down, tears in her eyes, biting her lips and there was a blush to her cheeks and her whole body was shaking from fear.
"She has not said a thing to me because she's afraid, I doubt that she lies. If…I find anything that's close enough to any of you harming her, I will kill you myself if I find she has been physically harmed." he said.
Elijah then turns to Kairi. He puts his hand out to her for permission. She bits her lip again but nods.
He smiles, he places a hand at the back of her neck and kisses her forehead gently. "I promise to keep you safe, Kairi."
He then leaves, intending to find Niklaus before midnight before anything happens to Hayley and the baby but to also, his daughter. He may have lost his mate many years ago, but he will not lose nor fail his daughter, even if it means losing his last part of his humanity or die trying.
