Elijah found his brother in Marcel's little club, he watched the scene play out, listening to every word that Niklaus was saying. HE needs to find a way to get Niklaus's mind, no matter how hard it will be. For his daughter's sake.
"Someone put you in a mood." Marcel was saying. "What can I do?"
"What you can do is, you can tell me what this thing is you have with the witches." Niklaus was saying.
Why is he asking Marcel about this? Why is he investigating now about the witches?
"You know I owe you everything I got. But I'm afraid I have to draw the line on this one. This is my business. I control the witches in my town, let's just leave it at that."
"Your town?" Niklaus was asking in a dangerous tone.
Elijah knew right there and then, with the rage he was feeling at that very moment, can't be good. When he is in that kind of mood and someone says something like that to him, it can never be good.
"Damn straight." Marcel said in a crocky tone.
Elijah shakes his head, Marcel was burying himself or one of his vampire followers a grave that they might not be able to climb out of and their buried man is Niklaus Mikaleson.
Niklaus laughs softly and points at Marcel.
"That's funny because when I left a hundred years ago, you were just a pathetic little scrapper. Still trembling from the lashes of the whips of those who would keep you down." Niklaus says. "And now look at you. Master of your domain, prince of the city."
Neither of them said anything for a moment, but a vampire did walk up to them, probably ready to foolishly protect Marcel from Niklaus if need to, but Elijah knows he won't be able to, not when Niklaus is a hybrid.
"I'd like to know how."
"Why?" asked Marcel, boldly. "Jealous?"
He got uneasy as Marcel asked this. If he keeps pushing, Niklaus will kill him. No doubt, Niklaus will keep sure it's a slow kill, not a quick one. Just like he swore if he had found out if someone had murdered Sky, their deaths would be so tourtous that they'd be begging to die.
"Hey, man. I get it. Three hundred years ago you helped build a backwater penal colony into something. You started it, but then you left. Actually, you ran from it. I saw it through, looked around. Vampires rule this city now. I got rid of the werewolves. I even found a way to shut down the witches. The blood never stops flowing and the party never ends. You wanna pass on through? You wanna stay a while?" Marcel says.
But so far, he hasn't mentioned Kairi yet to Niklaus but Elijah does wonder one thing….what does he know of Kairi? How had he come to know of her existence before them? But also, what does he want with her?
"Great. What's mine is yours, but it is mine. My home, my family and my rules." Marcel said to Niklaus.
"And if someone breaks those rules?" he asked, voicing Elijah's thoughts and one of his questions.
"They die. Mercy is for the weak. You taught me that, too. And I'm not the prince of the quarter, friend. I'm the king! How about you show me some respect." Marcel said to him "I know your niece is in town and I will be finding her and keeping her safe compared to anyone has before, her brothers can't protect her, her adoptive families can't protect her and just as hell her godparents can't protect her, they failed her. I'll protect her from all of the people who have touched her head! Tell me, which one of you, let Sky Mullins have sex, was it you or Elijah?"
Elijah now knew why Marcel wanted her, to control her. Because she is the new youngest Mikaleson, half original half human. That is something that's not going to happen, not to his daughter after going through whatever she has gone through.
Niklaus looked away for a moment, he did nothing but just glare at Marcel for a moment but then he grabbed a vampire, biting him. Either that vampire is going to die soon unless Niklaus gives him the antidote before his werewolf venom settles in.
"Your friend will be dead by the weekend. Which means I've broken one of your rules…and yet I cannot be killed. I am immortal. Who has the power now, friend?" he says then walks away but stops. "If you ever…. Bring up Sky Mullins in such fashion again, I will do much worse."
Elijah then leaves, calling Rebekah again. Besides, she needs to know she has a little niece.
"He's willing to give up everything." Elijah told her.
"Come on, Elijah. Does that really surprise you?" she asked.
"I can already see it. He's spiraling. He's lashing out in blind rage." Elijah said as he walked through the streets. "You know, the last time I saw him like this it lasted two hundred years. IF only Marcel kept Sky out of his mouth, it wouldn't be as bad as this."
"Then leave him to his temper tantrum and come home. With any luck, this misadventure will allow us a reprieve from all of his insanity." Rebekah said to him.
"He was so close. When he heard the baby's heartbeat and looked at my daughter's face, her big brown eyes were screaming at him for our help. I could see it in his eyes. He….he wanted it and her, he could almost taste happiness and now his temper has destroyed it. Even if I was to return him to sanity, he just lost Marcel's trust." he said.
"Daughter? So this mystery girl is…?"
"My and Sky's child." he confirmed.
"Why didn't you just say that? What is she like?" she asked.
"Quiet, withdrawn and very wary of strangers, she is even frighten of the witches at the moment. Something must've happened to her after her mother's…disappearance but she does not wish to talk about it. It's going to be a while until she trusts any of us."
"They must've hurt her." Rebekah said.
"Perhaps." he agrees, but until he finds proof, there is nothing he can do for now. "Then there's also this new adoptive father mystery around her. She flinches at the slightest touch, there is a chance she has been abused all her life. I will show her there is nothing to fear from me."
"Does she need anything?"
"I do not know, she keeps to herself mostly," he said.
He checks the time on his watch, realizing he's late. "I'm almost out of time to get the girl and Kairi." he said.
"Get her? Have you lost your mind? Are we running an orphanage now? Surely she has siblings or someone to take her in?"
He knows she was talking about Kairi, he does remember David. A young boy who could be so serious.
"Say what you will about Niklaus, but on my life, I'm not letting anything happen to that baby or our daughter. If Sky is really dead, she did not give up her life so her daughter, our daughter would live a life of torture and misery. I will not allow Kairi to be so alone ever again." Elijah told her firmly.
Elijah ends the call and goes to find Marcel to find him on the phone, probably trying to find Niklaus.
"I know how to deal with Klaus." he was saying then he hung up on the phone.
"Is that so? Please elaborate." said Elijah.
"Elijah Mikaleson."
The other vampires in the small vampires in the small cafe stand up, probably ready to fight if they had to. But Marcel raises a hand to stop them.
"No, I got it. It's all good."
None of them sat back down, so he sat on the chair across from Marcel. He needs to talk to him about a few things anyway.
"It's time we had a little chat." he said.
Elijah didn't speak for several minutes until Marcel was bored with the silence.
"Well, if you're gonna talk, talk. I got things to do." Marcel said to him.
It looks like a lot of things has changed since he last saw him, when he had thought his father had killed him all those many years ago.
"Oh, my, you have grown quite confident over the last century, haven't you?" Elijah said to him.
"Me? I'd say it's you and your brother got cocky, coming to my town like you own the place." Marcel said.
"Well, we did own the place, once. We were all quite happy here, as I recall. Although we could never control those pesky witches at the French Quarter. How do you do it?" Elijah said.
Marcel sighed. "Your brother asked me the same question. I gave him the same answer:It's my business. Everything in the Quarter is my business. Klaus comes into town all nice and friendly. Then he starts looking down his nose at what I done, like it's some cheap knock off of one of his dumb paintings. Then he gets pissed off like a little bitch and bites one of my guys." Marcel told him.
If he can play this right, he can get Marcel right where he wants him. To tell him everything. But if he plays it wrong…
"Well, I do apologize for Klaus's poor behavior. I assume you know that the bite will kill your friend within a matter of days." he said. Marcel looked worried. "Of course, Niklaus's blood would cure him."
Marcel looks at him with a shock expression, it was pieceless, actually. And he was thrilled with it. Elijah will not allow Marcel to control his daughter as if she is his puppet.
"Yes. Apparently, the blood of the hybrid will cure a werewolf bite. Quite a handy little thing when one needs leverage in negotiation." he said, leaning forwards.
"What kind of negotiations are we talking about?" Marcel asked.
"Return the body of the witch, Jane-Anne, allow her people to put her to rest." he said.
No need to tell Marcel that Kairi is his daughter….yet. But he will know of it soon no doubt. But he would rather keep it a secret until Kairi was ready to tell people and is more confident of herself.
"What do you care about the witches?" Marcel asked.
"Well, that's my business now, isn't it?" He challenges him. "But I do have a question."
"Oh?"
Good, he should look nervous. "What is your concern about this…mystery girl?"
Marcel smiles, looking crocky once again. "You really don't know? She is Sky's Mullin's daughter, youngest child. But she is special, and goes from world to world. A friend ask me to find her."
What does this friend….have to do with Kairi, what is their connection to one another?
"Oh? Why does your friend care?" he asked.
"Well, like you just said. That's my business, isn't it?" he challenges once again.
He smiles but after a while, Marcel agrees to this. He collects Sophie's sister's body and walks back to the graveyard, praying they have done nothing to the girls.
"Klaus does not care about the child nor his brother's daughter." said one of the witches.
"I do." Elijah said, they look at him. "And I bring proof of my intent to help you. The body of your fallen friend, which I procured from Marcel himself."
He gently lays her down as he says all of that and stands up. "May she be granted peace. Klaus will agree to your terms. I just need a little more time." said Elijah.
"You had your time. It's passed." said the leader of the witches.
"Shut up, Agnes." said Sabine.
Sophie also stands up looking at him. "For now, accept the deal. The girl and the child and my daughter remain unharmed…or Klaus will kill you all and I will help him." he said.
Elijah then leaves but turns around once more to give them a warning. Until HAyley came running in looking panicked.
"What is it?" Sophie asked.
"It's Kairi, she's passed out."
He runs out to the graveyard to see Kairi on her side, her back to him. He goes to her, knelt down, touching her shoulder gently. He didn't like how boney it felt as if she has been half starved through her life. He rolls her over to find her unconscious and unresponsive. He picks her up into his arms, carrying her.
Elijah turns around, wondering if he should go with the warning but he decides to do so. "If either of you have harmed my child in any way or form..,I will kill you myself."
He then leaves, going into a hotel for now, he lays Kairi on the bed, he pushes his sleeve back, biting into his wrist and puts his bleeding wrist to Kairi's mouth, coaxing her to feed. It'll do for now, once she wakes he'll get her to feed from a blood bag until she is more confident to hunt.
"Good girl." he said, his other hand stroking her hair gently, hoping it would comfort her.
Elijah kisses her forehead gently, it took a few minutes until there was color back into her cheeks again. Afterwards he squeezes her hand gently. "I'll return soon."
Elijah then turns to Hayley, to see her worried for Kairi, a girl both of them barely knows, yet seems to want help.
"I need you to watch her until I return." he said.
Hayley nods, sitting in Elijah's seat.
Elijah finds Niklaus under the bridge, drinking. Probably trying to get drunk so he couldn't think straight or to drown his insanity away, which never works on Niklaus.
"Have I not made clear my desire to be left alone?" Niklaus asked.
"Well, you demand to be left alone at least once a decade. Your words have ceased to have an impact." Elijah told him.
Niklaus then throws the bottle, shattering it into pieces as he turns around angrily.
"Why must you keep harping on about the baby and the girl, who is to be Sky's daughter?" he asked, angrily. "That child will never be born. In fact, Hayley is probably already dead, as well as Sky's daughter."
Elijah pushes him into a wall, he won't let him walk away, not from this, not from their chance.
"You will not walk away from this." he said.
Niklaus tried to push him away from him but Elijah stopped him. "Let me go."
"I will NOT!" he shouted as he threw his brother away from him. He then picks him up, holding him.
"Don't make me say it again. I will not let go, I will never let go." he told him.
But Niklaus throws him off of him, Elijah then gets a poke from the gates, ready to beat him if he has to. He needs to see this baby, Hayley and Kairi are their chance. They failed Sky but they can't fail her daughter.
"Even if I have to spend eternity saving you from your own stubborn, petulant, vile self." he said, he goes to him and swings the pole at him. "Even if I have to beat you as father beat you to remind you of your own humanity to care about anything."
He hit him with each word but Niklaus catches it on the third time and throws him, he sits up as Niklaus lets go of it and goes over to him. "You're beyond pathetic, Elijah."
He rubs the blood from his mouth, not wanting Kairi to see that he's been hurt at least once.
"Who's more pathetic?" he asked. "The one who sees hope to make his family whole…or the coward who can only see the world through his own fear?"
"I haven't cared about anything for centuries. Why on earth do you?" Niklaus asked.
"Because I failed you. Because the first time our father laid a hand on you, I should've struck him dead. And I made a promise to you, Always, forever. Family above all." he said.
Niklaus helps him up, laughing, not a genuine laugh but a laugh noneless. "You are a sentimental fool."
"Perhaps. But I've lasted this long in spite of it, haven't I?" he asked, walking away.
He went to check on his daughter, watching her sleep. He sighed, squeezing her hand. It suddenly felt cold, even to him despite being an Original.
But he knows, he knows it's a spirit, a spirit from the Infraworld, something Sky and her friend, Cole Freeman had been studying for a long time.
"Who are you?" he asked, looking around. He saw writing on the mirror.
'Hello, father.'
His brown eyes frown. "Can you appear?"
'Yes.'
Then a boy, with dark brown hair like his very own, messy. Brown eyes looking at him, his face pale as death.
"That's better. What's your name?" he asked.
"Aiden." he said.
"Aiden. So Sky must had twins." he said.
Aiden nods, looking pleased. "Yeah, I died in the womb, the thing got wrapped around my baby-wabby little dumb throat."
He chuckled. It reminds him of Sky that way, the way he had said it. "I'm sorry. It must be hard for you."
He wrote on the mirror this time. 'Sometimes.'
Elijah smiles at his entity son, he didn't even live but he can see he refuses to move on until Kairi is safe and sound, but she is now. So why was he still here? Was he worried about the witches or whatever it is that torments Kairi?
"I see, are you here to protect her until she is safe from harm?"
He crocks his head sideways, looking thoughtful about it. "Not really, I've always been here since she was born. It wasn't until…after our mother was killed, I realized that Kai needs to be protected, from some things more than others." Aiden said.
What does that even mean?
It must've shown in his face but Aiden shakes his head. "I can't say, Kai wouldn't let it up if I told you before her. If… you wish for her to trust you, father. You need to prove it and not go behind her back to find out what her past is and what she has gone through. It'll take time, but it'll happen."
Elijah then saw his image slowly fading, Aiden seemed to know it somehow because he cursed in japanese. He once again wrote in the mirror.
'I can't stay, the longer I keep this up with a solid form, the longer Kai will feel weaker. I only can do this while she's asleep or in her dreams. But either way, I've been here for too long. It was great to meet you, father.'
"You as well, son." Elijah said.
Aiden nods and disappears but Elijah saw the tears in his son's much pain has Kairi gone through to even his enitiy son having tears in his eyes like that? Only time will tell him this.
He finds Niklaus on a bench, obviously having thought about what they had discussed. He wonders what's on his mind, so he sits beside him, they sit in silence for several minutes.
'The bond of family blesses us with an immeasurable power. But we also must accept what comes with it, it gives us a responsibility, to love without condition, without apology. We can never waiver from the power of that bond, even when it is tested. The bond nourishes us, gives us strength. Without that power, we are nothing.'
"This town was my home once, and in my absence, Marcel has got everything I ever wanted." Niklaus said to him. "Power, loyalty. Family. I made him in my image, and he has bettered me. I want what he has, I want it back. I want to be king."
Elijah thought about it, he knew what to ask him. "So, what does all this child and your niece mean to you? A grab for power?"
Niklaus looks at him, curiosity in his brown eyes. "What do they mean to you?"
"I think…" he said, he thought about it, about them, what his daughter, his entity son and Niklaus's baby means to him. "These children could offer you the one thing that you've never believed you had."
"And what is that?" Niklaus asked. "Especially if you're daughter is fragile as we believe?"
"The unconditional love of family."
Niklaus looks at him for several minutes then looks away, holding the charm that Sky had made for each of them. Elijah keeps his charm someplace safe so none of their enemies can find it.
"Tell Sophie Feveraux we have a deal. I'm doing this for Sky, her daughter and my child. That is all." Niklaus said.
He nods, wondering what Sky would've said to all of this. She would probably give Niklaus one hell of a lecture for abandoning the woman he had pregnant, his child and her daughter in all one go, he smiles fondly at that. Her name may be Sky but her temper was just as bad as a terrible thunderstorm during a harsh winter.
They eventually brought them home, to the house that once belonged to Marcel's father. It's better to hide them away for a while, especially Marcel searching for his daughter for whichever reason he and his friend have.
He took off her shoes and stocks but he noticed something from her jeans, he rolled it up to see multiple scars on her necks that looked like she had been hit with many nails or at least something quite sharp.
What has she been through? He sighs, rolling it back down and removes her jumper to see bruises on her arms, finger bruises. He shakes his head, tucks her in and stokes her forehead gently.
He went to find Hayley in one of the rooms, trying to lift off the quilts off a crib. His daughter was still unconscious and unresponsive. But he knows sooner or later, she'll wake up.
"You all right?" he asked.
"Just dust. This place is ancient." Hayley said.
"Yes." he said, looking around the room. "It should serve our purposes. It's a sanctuary from our business in the quarter."
He walks over to pull the quilt off the crib as she says nothing on it. "Right now, you and Kairi are the most important people in this family. You need a good home."
She just smiles at him but doesn't say anything on the subject, he wonders if she feels uncomfortable. Understandingly, she is in a huge unknown house with two vampires from the original family.
"So, I'm curious. In all this time, has anyone asked you about how you feel?" Elijah asked.
"About having a miracle baby with a psychotic one-night stand?" she asks.
Not what he meant at all. "About being a mother." he corrects.
They stare at each other for several minutes, Hayley was obviously thinking about her answer. So he just pulls off the quilt and folds it up.
"I…I was abandoned when I was born, and my adoptive parents kicked me out the second that I turned into a wolf." she told him.
He wonders if that's why Kairi is all withdrawn. Had her own adoptive father abused her in the same manner, because he feared what she was? It's possible, after all, when people fear something, sometimes they ignore it or they do their best to destroy that abnormal thing in the house. But he will not know until Kairi comes to him and tells him about her past.
"So, I don't really know how I feel about being a mother because I never really had a good one." she said, pulling out of his thoughts.
He throws the quilt away and looks back at Hayley. "I will always protect you, just as I will with Kairi. You have my word on that."
She says nothing but until Niklaus speaks up. "And noble Elijah always keeps his word."
"Is it done?" he asked him.
"As a matter of fact, yes. Your underhanded deal worked quite well. Marcel was only too happy to accept my blood, even as he accepted my heartfelt apologies. His man, Thierry yet lives and I remain a welcome guest in the French Quarter." he said to him.
Elijah nods, good. At least they don't need to worry about Marcel, for now.
"My only concern now is this coven of impudent witches." Niklaus said, coming to him.
"I believe them to be honorable. They did release Hayley and Kairi to me. Although, they haven't been entirely forthcoming. Marcel obviously has something that they need. They don't want him dead. There must be a reason why, then there-"
He saw Kairi behind Niklaus, she was awake but she looked to be so small in such a big house as this, it didn't help that she has wrapped her arms around herself and her shoulders are tense as if expecting someone was going to hurt her or at least…beat her.
"Kairi." he said, sighing in relief.
He goes over to her, puts out his hand again, waiting for her permission patiently. Aiden had been right, she needs time and he needs to earn her trust in order to have the bond that he wishes to have with his daughter.
She nods, so he takes hand. "How are you feeling?"
She shrugs but didn't say anything but she did seem to be uncomfortable, he wonders if she is thirsty for some blood.
"Kairi, are you thirsty?" he asked.
She bit her lip then looked far away for a moment, he wondered if she was talking to Aiden. But she nods after a few seconds.
"Come. I have what you need, sweet one." he said, then turned to Niklaus. "We shall continue this later."
He nods, looking at Kairi once again with a curiosity in his eyes. Elijah wonders what's going through his head about Kairi but it does not matter. What matters right now, is that Kairi needs to feed.
They go into the kitchen, he gets the blood bag, puts it into a plastic cup and passes it to her. She holds the cup but doesn't take a slip, he wonders if she is frightened to anger him.
"Kairi, you don't need permission to drink." he said gently.
She blushes and drinks the blood. "Kairi, how old are you?" he asks.
"16." she said, quietly.
16 years old. She looks a lot younger than 16. That surprised him.
"Would you like to hear more of your mother?" he asked, but this time, she shakes her head.
"All right, is there anything you like to ask me?" he asked.
She pinch her lips together, very similar to how her mother used to do it. She then shakes her head at this. "No."
Kairi is so close off but then he sees something on her wrist that he's never seen before, a bracelet that has little charms on it.
"That's a beautiful bracelet you're wearing. Have you always had it?" he asked.
Kairi looks down at it, looking surprised that he even noticed it, she nods. "Since I was four. My friend gave one to each of us."
"Each of you?" Elijah asked.
"Yes…I…" she then winces from memory. "My friend, Eun-Byeol give us all a bracelet with the same charms, saying, if we were ever to feel alone, just look to the bracelet and we'll be together again, even if we're far away from each other, we'll always be together."
Elijah smiles. While it seems Kairi had suffered from something but in a happier tone, she did have good friends who had been there for her when she needed them.
"The wand is for Davina Claire, the monkey is for Zidane, the princess crown is for Terra, the notebook is for me, the last one, the book is for Eun-Byeol."
He now knows the name of her friends of each charm, the friends that had been there for Kairi since the death of her mother.
"Have you seen them since?" he asked.
"Just Eun-Byeol."
He nods. "Drink up."
She does, but he wonders if she does it out of fear or not, it is difficult to tell at this stage. "Now, has anyone asked you how you feel?"
"Being kidnapped by a bunch of witches?" she asked.
"No, to have a father, one you never knew you had?" he asked.
She pinch her lips together again, her finger tapping at the glass. "No…I mean, I've had father figures, who either passed away or were killed, sometimes in the most brutalist way possible. But no."
"I'm so sorry, Kairi." he said, she has suffered through so much if she had to witness it. But he hopes to fix that.
"I don't know how to feel." she whispers.
"If you're not comfortable, Kairi. I won't force you to call me father."
She looks at him with those sad big brown eyes. "Father? No. Daddy on the other hand? I'll be down for that."
He smiles. "That'll be fine. We'll talk more later but for now, go back to the room I put you in and try to sleep. Something tells me you didn't sleep much lately due to the witches."
She nods, gets up and goes up the stairs, he goes back to Niklaus after washing the cup of the blood.
"So…how's my little Niece?" he asked. "Still a fragile kitten or does the tiger have claws?"
"She may have open up to me, some. But it'll be a long time until either of us grains her trust." Elijah said. "I believe she has suffered from abuse and torment since her mother died."
Niklaus sighed. "What about Marcel?"
Classic Niklaus, changing the subject in order to avoid the discussion on Elijah's daughter and Sky, but Elijah is fine with that, they do need to make a plan.
"In addition to the secret weapon he uses to control the witches, Marcel has assembled a small army of vampires. Working together, we could destroy them from the inside." Elijah told him.
"And what of Rebekeah? Has she stopped her pouting long enough to join the fun?" Niklaus asked.
Elijah sighed. "She has made her disinterest quite clear."
"One too many times daggered and shoved in a box, I gather? Or perhaps, she doesn't share your unwavering belief that I can be saved." Niklaus said as he moved around the room.
"Rebekah may surprise us yet, especially knowing of her niece," he said, calmly. "After all, we all swore the same vow."
Elijah pulls the quilt off the table.
"I hope she stays far away. Because in my desire to reclaim this town, to steal from Marcel that which he holds most dear, I have realized one massive vulnerability." he said as he moved back around. "One weakness that Marcel could exploit."
"And what is that?" he asked, the more Elijah knew about Marcel, the better.
"You."
He lets out a yell as he feels the dagger in his chest, he held onto his brother. "Forgive me, my brother. There is no power in love. Mercy makes you weak, family makes you weak. But do not worry, I'll protect Kairi from anything that threatens her or aims to hurt her pretty little head. I shall look after her."
Then everything went dark but not before he heard Niklaus again. "If I'm going to win this war…I have to do it alone."
Then everything was gone, the only thing he dreams of was his time with Sky. But in all of that, he worries for his daughter.
Would Niklaus really keep her safe or would he do something to harm her? He hopes, for his sake, he'd do as he promises but he knows if Niklaus still has ssome love for him and for Sky, he would do anything in his power to protect their daughter.
