Chapter 2: Siege
Michael grabbed my hand and before I could say anything we quickly ran back to the school gate. Bernard also noticed what was happening and ran behind us, while holding his arm visibly in pain. When I turned my head I noticed a large group of zombies running toward us. After half a minute we reached the school gate. Michael started closing the gate to prevent zombies from getting onto the school ground. When the gate was almost closed, zombies started pushing it, trying to get inside. I noticed it and quickly came to help him. After a few minutes of desperate battle, we managed to close it completely. Michael closed the lock. When I noticed zombies extending their hands through the gaps between bars in the gate I felt shiver running down my spine.
- "Those bars won't stop them for very long" he said. "We must get into the school and barricade it".
When we entered the school building I noticed Bernard collapsed on the floor. His wound started to get worse, he was visibly in pain. I looked at Michael:
- "Go tell others, to barricade the school, I must take Bernard to the nurse room or else he will get worse" He quickly glanced, before running away to barricade the main door. I gave my hand to Bernard, allowing him to stand up. He leaned on me, and we started to go to the nurse room.
- "How does it feel" i asked him
- "Like someone was pouring melted steel into my arm. You know, had it worse" he responded sarcastically. I rolled my eyes.
- "Don't move too much, we don't know if there isn't some toxin that will spread inside your body. Please stay calm"
- "You know, it's easy to easy, when you're not the one dying from zombie bite, but I will try, thanks"
After a minute we reached the nurse room. I ordered him to lay on the bed.
- "You know, I'm not a nurse, but I will try my best. Please cooperate."
- "My life is in your hands, Ms President" he responded
I rolled his sleeve so I could have better access to his arm. It didn't look good. There was a lot of blood, skin looked very bad, like it was rotting, there was also possible infection". I tried to remember from first aid lessons what I should do. I said to him:
- "I must perform a few operations. You may feel pain, please do not resist"
- "If you want to kill me, it's the perfect occasion, no one will notice, you know" he said and started laughing. Ohh you.
- "If you promise you won't insult me, I may not kill you".
Remembering safety precautions, I washed my hands and grabbed a pair of plastic gloves from the counter. I took a piece of rag and tied it around his arm.
- "Hey, what are you doing?"
- "I'm trying to stop the flow of blood to your wound, so you won't blood out. Don't worry, I won't cut it" I tightened it a few times until I felt resistance. Then I took his arm and placed it above the sink. I opened the flowing water to clean his wound. After removing all dirt and blood I stopped the water, and wiped it using a paper towel. He calmly hissed. Then I took a rubbing alcohol and said:
- "Beware, I must disinfect your wound. It may hurt a little"
- "Don't worry, I'm not made from sugar. Do it"
I opened the bottle and poured it into his wound. He twisted and started screeching, but allowed me to continue. After I was satisfied that I poured enough I once again wiped it with a paper towel. I placed a piece of cotton inside of it before covering it with a few layers of bandage. Finally I fastened the bandage with a paper towel.
- "Do you feel better?"
- "Yeah I think I will survive. Thanks, for you know, saving my life" he said, visibly embarrassed.
- "Just because we had some differences in the past, does not mean I would just let you die."
Then I heard door opening and Sayori banging in:
- "Monika? Bernard? What happened? I have heard screams like someone was skinned alive!"
- "Bernard was beaten by a zombie and I had to save his wound. He's all right now. How are you all doing?"
- "Michael told us everything, we barricaded all the doors outside of the school. Windows on the first level have bars, so we should be safe. Situation is not looking good: please look!"
We went outside of the room and looked outside of the windows. There were hundreds of zombies outside of the building banging their heads against the walls,
- "The situation is not looking good. We are besieged inside the building" said Sayori. "We don't know what happened outside, none of our phones are working. We cannot leave the building. I'm afraid we are doomed"
Bernard looked at both of us with determination in his eyes.
- "We are not doomed. Monika, please gather the Literature Club and tell them to meet with us in the Debate Room Club at 18:00. We must assess what we have and how long we can survive. I will gather the Debate Club and discuss strategy."
I nodded and ran to the Literature Club room with Sayori. I did not plan to give up.
