Introduction

The Silent Protector

We pay a visit to planet Earth today, and let our gaze wander through the old Siberian rocky mountains where even the goats that dance about the cliffs as if each day is their last would not remember the man who lived near the peaks. Let us climb high above the crags and cliffs to the snow laden peaks. Past the straggler trees that barely survive the harshness of the thin air and biting frost, and up to a small cabin high above the world.

Sequestered far away from everything, high atop a plateau snug before a colossal cliff that protected it from the harshness of the frozen gusts that whispered songs of the crags, sat a cabin. Within the rough logs and tempered glass that denied the claim of the starving cold, sat a healthy young man on a polished mahogany rocking chair that silently rocked in a slow rhythm.

The young fellow was in his early twenties, still fresh to the world, though not as naive as one his age would normally appear. One would first notice his healthy dull violet hair that was resting atop his head in a comfortable bowl cut. His ice blue eyes scanning the page of the book he was reading as the faint ticking of the tall dark wood grandfather clock methodically trickled from across the room.

He sat in the far corner of the warm living room next to the fireplace that crackled and hissed pleasantly. The glass chandelier on the ceiling was turned off as the natural light from the long panoramic windows across from him filled the room sufficiently. He wore an open jacket casual gray suit with the top three buttons of his shirt open, revealing just a peek of his remarkably dense musculature.

Seemingly finished reading for the moment, the young man placed his book down on a small table on the right of his corner chair. Yawning a long and satisfying yawn, the young man stretched his arms and stood up slowly, as if he found the act of getting up quite unpleasant. The look on his face very much said that he would rather not have to rise from his chair, but he had to do so.

Resentful of his further duties, the young man walked over to the windowsill and rested his hands on the white painted wooden counter that extended almost a foot inward from the clear glass of the windows.

The sun shone fiercely across the valley in which his cabin resided, reflecting its radiance on the densely packed snow that laid lazily atop the many rocks and trees that dotted the mountain.

During the coldest parts of the year, this particular valley manages to bypass the most violent of storms, and is high enough to not be affected by most the avalanches that otherwise make these mountains a death trap. Barely a soul besides the silent young man knows this particular safe haven exists besides the occasional out of place plane that passes by above, none the wiser of this secret haven.

Now one would reasonably wonder who this man was and why he had gone out of his way to make himself practically completely unknown to the rest of the world, as this place was so far out of the beaten path that you would have to know exactly what you were looking for beforehand and how to get there to even find this cabin in the first place.

"It's been three months. I guess I should go down the mountain and buy some more gasoline for the generators" the young man grumbled begrudgingly. He had solar and wind turbine power for his cabin, but he also used gas generators as well.

He scratched the back of his head, that had become quite itchy at that moment. Turning away from the window, he walked through the room, his bare feet sinking comfortably into the soft beige carpeted floor. After changing into proper clothing for an excursion down the mountain, he placed his coat, gloves, hat, and boots on over his clothes, and looked at the picture right next to the front door.

It was a picture of him in his last life, his wife and two daughters.

It warmed his heart completely seeing their smiling faces. When he had died of old age, Trunks had been given a chance to regain his youth in a different Earth in exchange for his protection of the planet. He had accepted the offer quite sincerely, as he had lived a long and happy life, yet he wasn't ready to go to heaven just yet.

Kissing his pointer finger and touching the forehead of his smiling wife, he smiled warmly.

"I miss you" he murmured softly, a longing creeping into his eyes as he held his finger softly on her forehead. Turning away after a few long silent moments passed, he opened the front door and walked out into the snowy plateau. Closing the door behind him, he walked out into the world that he oversaw as its silent stoic protector.
