Chapter II: A Meeting of Fate
The Justice League Watchtower
Two weeks later
Kara walked into the meeting room, ready to get her new assigned area. Most of the heroes in the League were assigned their own places to patrol in their respective hometowns and home areas.
Kal-El then smiled at her and gestured with a hand. "Kara…we were just missing you. Glad to see you could make it."
The blonde just gave him a nod and a smile. "Good to be here as always Kal."
Batman then went on with the assignments as usual.
Kara, as usual, got Metropolis or rather the eastern part of the city. She felt herself blush a bit and smiled. Maybe I'll see Sean on my patrol. He'd be a sight for sore eyes. As she got up to leave, she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around to see Kal smirking at her. She raised an eyebrow at him. "What's up Kal?"
He smirked at her. "How's your officer friend? The one you saved from Bane and his thugs?"
Kara's cheeks suddenly turned red and she hesitated to answer for a moment. The woman's lip downturned for a minute and she spoke in a downbeat tone. "He's fine…or he seems to be. He hasn't called me using the communicator I gave him. I was kind of hoping he'd call." She then nervously rubbed her wrists while staring at them.
Kal then smiled at her and put a hand on her shoulder to calm her. "I'm sure he's just a bit shy Kara. Lois was the same way when we first met years ago. It took me forever to track her down and get close to her. Don't give up. You'll find him."
Kara then gave her cousin a bright smile. Her heart lightened at his words. You are right Kal. I need to have hope. I need to have hope and never give up. He's worth it. It's worth a try at least. "Y-You're right. I'm just nervous. I've never really had a friend outside of the League before." She then gave him a punch in the shoulder and half-grinned. "Thanks cousin."
Kal then gave her a nod. "Anytime Kara."
Eastern Metropolis
Later that night
As Kara flew around later that night, she heard her watch go off. She activated it. "Hello?"
A man's nervous voice answered. "Uh…hey. It's Sean." Kara's heart skyrocketed and she couldn't help but smile. The flirtatious tone returned to her voice. "Well hello there my sweet human! I was wondering when I'd hear from you! I was worried you were ghosting me!"
"I…uh…sorry. Paperwork at the precinct has been a pain in my ass. I'd like to make up for that if I can. Are you free right now?"
Kara giggled. "Heh. You sure know how to keep a girl waiting. I'd normally say no but since it's you…I'll make an exception."
The Kryptonian knew her attempt at flirting had thrown the officer off his game as he could only answer in a stutter. "S-Sure. Meet me at the rooftop on top of Starlight Apartments."
Kara giggled to herself. "I'll see you there then."
She then flew off, albeit with more gusto.
Starlight Apartments
Rooftop
Sean leaned back and took a drag of his cigarette. The cool night air brushed against his face. Is she even going to show up? What if it didn't work? Not long before those thoughts entered his mind,
Kara then flew down slowly in front of him with a sly smirk. "Hi there!"
Sean glanced over at her and felt his jaw drop. The cigarette hung loosely from his mouth, still lit. "Uh..hey. I didn't think it would actually work."
Kara smiled at him brightly and caressed his face with a hand, giggling, "Oh you. You humans are so silly. I told you the minute you called…I would be here." She then looked around and noticed the warm pizza on the table along with two sweetened iced teas. "Is that pizza?"
Sean glanced over at the table and nodded. "I…thought you'd be hungry. You probably don't get enough time to grab a snack."
Kara giggled. That giggle soon turned into a full bodied laugh.
Sean then noticed the many burn marks and bullet holes on her armor. It was clear to him that she had had a long night. He then added nervously. "Ah…don't you want to change? That suit of yours looks pretty beat up. You can change in my apartment if you'd like."
Kara then blinked at him before realizing he was being chivalrous. She smiled. "Oh…well aren't we the gentlemanly type? My heart is all a flutter." She then walked up to him and placed a hand on his chest.
Sean just blinked at her with a reddened face, unsure of what else to say.
Kara then removed her hand and took a few steps back. "I appreciate the chivalry officer but there's no need. It wouldn't be wise of me to just go strolling into your apartment. People would ask questions. I don't think either of us would like that. I'd rather not make your job any harder than it already is." She then outstretched her arms. "Watch and learn." She then spun in a circle, starting slowly but soon gaining so much speed that Sean's eyes couldn't even catch up. She then brought the rotation to a complete stop. Soon her clothing had changed from her armored suit to what looked like a beautiful black dress complete with a nice set of stylish black heels. The dress was tied together around the waist with a black leather belt. She also had a pair of black, rectangular-framed glasses on. She then outstretched her arms. "What do you think?"
Sean blinked at her before quipping. "You wouldn't be related to Dorothy Gale would you?"
Kara blinked at him confused. "Who is Dorothy Gale?"
Sean thought of explaining the Wizard of Oz to Kara, but thought against it. "Ah. Never mind. I'll explain later. Follow me down the elevator. I set everything up there."
Kara smiled at him and clasped her hands together. "I'm right behind you!"
Floor 1, Starlight Apartments
The elevator door opened to a smiling Kara and a rather confused looking Sean.
Kara let out a squeal of glee and turned to Sean with a glimmer in her eyes. "Wow! What do you call this contraption Sean? I've never seen it before!"
Sean glanced at her with a raised eyebrow. "Uh…It's an elevator. It uses a pulley and motor system to allow humans to travel between floors in the building."
Kara crossed her arms at him and smirked. "I see. It's a handy invention. I like it."
Sean just stared at her confused.
She's never used an elevator before? How is that possible?
He let out a nervous chuckle. "Glad you like it." He then looked out the doors to ensure nobody was watching them.
Good. Good. I'd rather not have my neighbors ask me why I'm leading a pretty blonde girl into my room. Too much trouble. Then again…I still don't know why I'm doing this. I still don't know what the hell she is and where the hell she comes from. Then again…that is why I'm doing this. I'm trying to see her motivations and her reasons for the whole superhero gig. I owe her a chance. She did save my life. "Follow me."
Kara nodded. "Right behind you."
Sean then unlocked the door using his key and opened it, stepping to the side, "Ladies first."
Kara just chuckled with a laugh. "Okay now you are trying too hard. Tell me. What are you thinking hmm? Trying to woo me on the first date? If you are trying to get me into bed…I'm afraid I might be more than you can handle."
Sean just grunted blushing. "Okay. One I never said this was a date. Two…I…am definitely not trying to sleep with you. Judging by how you were able to bend that thug's rifle with one hand…I'd end up in the hospital if I tried that."
Kara then caressed his face with a hand with a sly grin. "Smart man. I've unfortunately had to break arms and fingers from some men who are not as scrupulous as you are. They…never called me back. I'm sure you can fill in the blanks as to why."
Sean nodded. "Ain't hard to understand why. You do give new meaning to the term blue balls."
Kara then burst into outright laughter. Oh. He's a witty one. I like him. I really like him. "Oh! That's a good one! Very witty! I like it!"
Sean just nodded with a half-smirk. "Eh. Comes from the family dynamic. My family is part Mexican and part Spanish on both sides. I was born in San Antonio. My family and I were always giving each other shit growing up."
Kara smirked at him with crossed arms. "Really now? Texas? I've never heard of that place before."
Sean then chuckled. "Really now? Just how much of Earth have you explored Supergirl? I have to admit I'm a little shocked."
Kara laughed. "I usually stay in Metropolis. I don't have that much vacation time."
Sean then laughed. "Looks like someone needs to talk to their union then." He then pointed towards the table in the middle of the room. "I..uh…hope you like pizza."
Kara's eyes then turned to the pizza boxes and she gasped in awe. "Why Sean. Your perception skills are uncanny. I love pizza." She then walked over to the table, took a seat and opened the pizza boxes.
She then squealed with glee. "You got pepperoni?"
Sean, who had taken the seat across from her, just nodded bashfully. "It was an educated guess."
Kara then smirked at him. "Well…good guess then." She then started eating one pizza.
Sean took one of his own and began eating it. He took a sip of his sweetened tea.
Kara's eyes widened when she took her first sip of hers. "What is this amazing concoction? It's sweet yet bitter. I love it."
Sean chuckled while taking a sip of his own. "It's sweetened ice tea. It's…ah…popular where I come from." He then felt his face redden when her bright blue eyes met his. Her tone piped up indicating her curiosity. "San Antonio right? Where is that place?" Sean then pointed to the map of the U.S. he had on the wall with a pointer. He landed the pointer on Metropolis and moved it to San Antonio.
Kara's eyes widened in shock. "Wait that's about...27 hours."
Sean took another sip, letting out a long sigh, "Yup. I'm a long way from home. I haven't spoken to my family in some time."
Kara's smile turned into a frown. She looked down if for a moment. So he's away from his family as well. I can relate to that. I do miss Uncle Jor-El. That sort of pain never goes away. "You too huh? I can…relate." She then turned her head away sighing. "My family…lives far away as well."
Sean bitterly chuckled. "It…isn't easy but I make it work. I needed to get away and make something of myself."
Kara smiled at him. "That is quite admirable."
Sean let out a nervous smile meeting her eyes. "Uh..thanks." He then said what was on his mind. "So why the whole superhero gig? Surely you could've used those powers of yours to…I don't know, bankrupt a casino or win the lottery. It doesn't seem like you have much of a retirement plan." The Kryptonian just snorted at him and shook her head. "You have quite the knack for humor Sean."
Sean just crossed his arms at her nodding intently. "You'll have to forgive my sense of humor. I'm not used to having dinner with a woman who has the power to turn me into a human pretzel."
Kara laughed. "Hah. Oh that's hilarious." She then rested a hand over his. "I get it. Really I do. You are somewhat wary of me still. I don't blame you. I'd…probably feel the same in your shoes. It isn't everyday that a alien from some faraway planet just walks into your life and calls you her friend." She then bent over and caressed the human's face with a hand. "But please believe me when I say I mean you no harm Sean. I care about the Earth. I care about humanity. You and just about everyone else on this silly little planet. I only seek to protect you humans from the forces who seek to dominate your home."
She then chuckled, wondering if she should say the next words that formed in her mouth. She then added a flirty tone. "If…you would forgive my boldness for a moment…I especially care about you. You fascinate me. You fought off a raging maniac on venom all by yourself using nothing but your skill and wit. No powers. No safety net. I..admit I find you intriguing."
Sean, normally cool and calm in these situations, suddenly turned beet red in the face. "Me? Why me? I'm just a cop. I'm no one special."
Kara shook her head, slyly smirking. "I would have to disagree. There is something about you that I find rather charming. Most people are too scared to even look at me let one converse with me yet here you are…just chatting along and cracking jokes as if we were old friends. I admit I'm curious why."
Sean scoffed. "Well if you really must know…It is because I see you as no different from me. Beneath that suit and all those powers lies a human being. You may have the powers of a god and all that but that doesn't mean you aren't human on the inside. " He sighed blushing. "Well..whatever you are on the inside."
Kara smiled to herself, speaking in a rather flirty tone. "Are you saying that you find me attractive officer?"
Sean turned to her with a blush on his face. He then shook his head. "Hey! Don't read too much into that! You are an alien with the power to lift up a passenger jet. I'm a police officer with a whole lot of issues. There is no way we are compatible."
Kara, feeling a new sense of confidence overcome her, then proceeded to push the issue a bit. "I don't know. My cousin is married to a human woman now. The two of them gel well together. Who says we can't?"
Sean blinked at her. "You could have anyone in the world. I'm pretty damn sure you have a whole line of men chasing after you. Why in the hell would you want a beat cop like myself?"
The Kryptonian then walked up to him and placed a hand on his chest. "Perhaps it is because you, out of all the humans I've ever met, have heart and a kind soul. You also know the pain of being separated from your loved ones." She stared at the ground and sighed. "I don't mind the praise but I'd like to be loved for who I truly am. For more than just being Supergirl. I want to be loved for being me…for being Kara-Zor El." She then looked up at him with a hopeful smile. "I'm lonely. You take the powers away and that is who I am Sean." My entire race was killed by a genocidal maniac when I was a mere teenager." The Kryptonian rushed to take his hands into hers. "My family is all dead. My uncle, Jor-El…my cousin's father, along with all my other family…died when Krypton was destroyed by Braniac."
Sean nodded. "I can relate in my own way. My mother died of cancer when I was younger. The loss hit me hard." The Kryptonian gave him a sad smile. "I'm so sorry. That sounds like a terrible burden." She then squeezed his hands into hers. "I..actually fled Krypton with Kal when he was sent to Earth. His parents' last wish was for me to watch over him. I was supposed to be…his protector…" She then shook her head with a look of guilt in her eyes. "My ship was blown off course by a meteorite and we ended up separated. It took me forever to find him." She then offered the police officer a small pained smile. "He is all the family I have left now."
Sean felt a pang at his heart. He knew the pain of loss. He had lost his mother to cancer at a young age so the pain of losing a loved one was nothing new to him. "Who is Kal-El?"
Kara smiled at him. "Your people know him as Superman. I know him as Kal-El. He's my cousin."
Sean blinked. "Your cousin is Superman." He then scratched his head and shook his head. "That..makes too much sense. You both wear that same emblem on your suit.""
Kara gave him a toothy grin. "Heh. I've never thought of it that way. You do have a point though. We of the House of El aren't exactly hiding our familial bond very well." She then shook her hand, squeezing his hands a little tighter. "So…you…um…think we can try this? Two lonely souls coming together?" She then gave him a pained yet hopeful smile. Come on. I know I'm gambling with my heart here but I want to try.
Sean felt himself sigh. He then stood up and took another drag of his cigarette. "I want to try as make me feel understood." He then shook his head. "I just don't know though. You are a woman with the power to pick up a building. I'm a human who's skilled with a gun. It's a bit of an intimidating balance."
Kara nodded. She then caressed his face with a hand speaking in a soft tone. "True but you have no reason to worry about me trying to harm you or make you feel unequal. I genuinely want to treat you as an equal in all ways." She then tilted her head at him, her lip trembling a bit. "Do my powers scare you?" Please don't tell me he is scared of me…like the rest.
Sean shook his head with widened eyes taking his hands into hers. "What? No..no…That isn't the problem."
Kara smiled sweetly at him, sighing longingly. She then smiled at him. "I'm…relieved to hear that. You had me worried there."
Sean just nodded, smiling nervously, "It's just that this is a risky proposition. I'm a police officer. Danger is literally my job. You could get hurt getting close to me."
Kara laughed. "I'd say the same if not more for you handsome. You don't have my super strength or my invulnerability to bullets. You are human after all." She then smiled and patted his cheek. "Come on. Aren't you the least bit curious? I get it. We barely know each other at this point. This is dangerous for the both of us. I get that but we already face danger on a daily basis on account of our jobs. " She then took his hands into hers and squeezed them. "Doesn't it feel nice to have someone who understands you?"
Sean let out a long sigh. His cheeks reddened. "It..does."
She then chuckled with a half-grin and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Plus I can sense the quickening of your heartbeat and the way your eyes are looking into mine at this moment. I know you feel something for me."
Sean blinked at her. "I do. I can't deny that." He then stared down at the floor and up at her. He then grasped her by the shoulders and let out a loud sigh. "Okay. This is probably going to end up being one of the craziest things I ever do in my life but I want to try."
Kara felt her heart leap for joy and she pulled him into a hug. "I'm pleased to hear that."
The two then broke the hug.
Sean then took her hands into his. "Just promise me one thing."
Kara smiled. "Of course. Anything."
Sean then met her eyes. "Promise me that we will keep this between us. If people in the precinct find out about this…It would cause trouble for the both of us.."
Kara laughed. "Of course. I'd actually prefer it that way. It would make things easier for me as well. I have many enemies. I'd like to do what I can to keep you safe." She then patted his cheek with a hand. "Now will you keep a secret for me in return?"
Sean raised an eyebrow. "Of course."
Kara smiled at him. "Okay. I'm choosing to trust you on this." She then took in a deep breath. "I go by the name Linda Danvers but that is just my human cover name. My real Kryptonian name is Kara Zor-El. Superman…is my cousin. His real name is Kal-El. We're actually aliens from the planet Krypton."
Sean blinked at her. "Huh. I never would have thought that. Everytime I pictured aliens as a kid…I always pictured little green men with big eyes."
Kara burst out laughing. "I never tire of that line." She then smirked and kissed him gently on the lips. "So…you promise to keep that a secret? It would be rather troublesome for me if that ever leaked out in the Daily Planet. The people close to me would end up getting hurt." She then gently caressed his face with a hand. "I'd hate for that to happen to you."
Sean's face reddened and he gave her a quick nod. "You have my word."
Kara laughed. "Good." She then bit her lip. "So do I have permission to kiss you then?"
Sean again went red in the face. "I..uh..sure."
Kara then put her arms around his neck. A sly smirk formed on her face. "Okay then. Come here." She then pulled him in for a kiss.
He followed her lead.
The two felt the electricity between one another.
Hmm so this is what kissing someone feels like. I like it. Sean blinked. Well this night went down an interesting pathway than I expected. I'm officially dating a superhero. Rebecca is going to flip if she hears about this. Then again…it's my life. I feel something for her. I do want to try to be more open with people.
The two then separated lips from one another.
Kara let out a sigh of contentment. "Ah. So that's what a first kiss feels like. I like it. I never got this far with any of my past dates. This is exciting."
Sean smiled at her and let out a laugh. "I'd…uh…have to agree."
Kara looked up at him smirking. "Well good. I would've been rather insulted if you didn't." She then took his hands into hers. "Since you are now my boyfriend…You now have that privilege as well. Please just call me Kara when we are in private. Linda..in public."
Sean nodded with a blush. "As you wish Kara."
Kara giggled. "Ah. I'm going to enjoy hearing you say that."
The communicator on her wrist then went off. She then activated it with a twist. "Yes."
Batman's voice came over the intercom. "Kara. This is Batman. We need you at the Watchtower immediately."
Kara let out a long sigh rolling her eyes. "I'll be right there Bruce. Just give me a second to change."
"Understood."
Kara then turned the communicator off. She then turned to Sean, who had a shocked look in his eyes, "Bruce Wayne is Batman?"
Kara smirked at her boyfriend and covered his mouth with a hand. "Heh. That is another secret you'll have to keep now my dear officer." She then took the opportunity to kiss him quickly before pulling away. "Sorry to cut our date short my love.. Duty calls. I'll be thinking of you in the meantime."
Sean chuckled. "Heh. Same here."
Kara then smirked at him and then squeezed his arm with a hand, speaking in a rather flirty tone, "Good to hear. You are mine now. I'd hate to have to cause a scene in front of the MPD. Bye for now." She then opened the window and just flew out the window.
Sean watched her fly away and pressed a hand against where she had kissed him. "Well this night just got interesting."
