Day Sixteen - Candy Canes

Hermione wonders why candy canes are missing from the tree in the Prefects meeting room.

A/N: I'm going to try to stop leaving notes on most of the one shots now, so I'll just say this: yes, most of them, if not all, are pretty rubbish. This is my first attempt at one shots and I'm writing them quicker than I normally would, which might be making them shittier than they could be, at least written by me. Anyone who wants to take any of these ideas and write something better, feel free, and please let me know if you do cause I'd love to read it and link it at the end of the applicable one shot if I can! So apologies for my rubbish one shots, and if you're still reading them, thank you so much!

'Who's been stealing the candy canes off the tree?' Hermione questioned the prefects.

They were in their weekly meeting in a designated spare classroom, which they had decorated for Christmas. They had hung some candy canes on the tree, one for each of them to have in the last meeting before Christmas, which wasn't for another week, but most of the candy canes had disappeared already.

Everyone looked around at each other, wondering why they were even being asked this question.

'What does it matter if some of the candy canes are gone, Granger? Draco asked from beside. 'Aren't they there for people to eat?'

'Well, yes, but there's only one per person and they're for us to eat in the last meeting before Christmas,' she explained as she glanced around at everyone, trying to figure out who the culprit was.

She spotted several guilty faces, and realised there was more than one culprit.

'So most of you have had one?' She questioned.

Most people nodded their heads.

'Granger, in our defence, when we decorated that tree you told us there was a candy cane each, but you never said they were for a specific day,' Draco told her calmly. She noticed he wasn't looking guilty at all. 'We've all just been helping ourselves to our own candy cane at the end of the meetings when we wanted them, it's just taken you until now to notice.'

'So no one knew we were supposed to save them?' She asked, slightly sad that they weren't all going to enjoy them together.

There were lots various of mumbles of 'sorry' from the room at large.

'How about this, Granger,' Draco began, trying to cheer her back up. He wasn't her best friend, by any means, but they'd certainly become less than enemies lately and he wasn't a fan of seeing her so down, especially at Christmas. 'In the last meeting before Christmas, we'll all sit and share some sweets and chocolates from Honeydukes. I'll go in at the weekend and buy some. I can even buy some more candy canes if you like.'

Hermione's face brightened instantly.

'That's a great idea, Draco, that you. I just wanted us all to share something like that before Christmas because the meeting won't need to last anywhere near as long as usual.'

'Excellent, it's a plan,' Draco clapped his hands together. 'Now, onto the actual meeting -'

'Hang on, Malfoy,' Ron interrupted to a glare from Draco. 'What about all the candy canes left on the tree?'

'Well, whoever hasn't had theirs yet can have it at the end of today's meeting. Okay with you, Granger?'

Hermione simply nodded in approval.

'Excellent. Now -'

'What about those of us who don't want a candy cane?' Asked Ernie MacMillan.

'Then don't eat one,' Draco said through gritted teeth.

'But then there'll be some left but not enough for everyone who wants one to have had two,' Ernie explained.

'Then they can stay on the damn tree, MacMillan. We'll put them with everything else on the table in the last meeting and buy a few more, okay?'

Ernie just nodded. He could tell he was getting on Draco's nerves and didn't want to end up paired with someone he hated for rounds because of it.

'Great, now, onto the actual meeting,' Draco began again.

'Who the hell doesn't like candy canes?' Ron asked quietly from his seat the other side of Hermione. She elbowed him to shut him up so he couldn't aggravate Draco any further. She'd already wasted enough time this meeting, they didn't need Draco going on a rant as well, and over candy canes of all things…
