Every King Needs An Heir
"Sophie Deveraux. What is this?" Klaus asks as he walks into the mausoleum.
"He's all yours," Elijah tells her as his brother shoots him a questioning glance. "Proceed."
"You know you're famous in this town? Witches tell bedtime stories about the powerful vampire Klaus. We know Marcel was nothing but an orphan street rat until you made him what he is. And now he is out of control." Sophie tells Klaus with a shake of her head. "He does what he wants. He kills who he wants. I'm gonna stop him. And you're gonna help me." She declares confidently as if the matter was already settled.
Klaus smiles at her, amused; If she genuinely thought he would help the likes of her, then she was sorely mistaken. "This is why you brought me here," he asks his brother, pointing at the witch before him.
"Hear her out," Elijah urges his younger brother.
"I don't need to hear her out. I assure you, love, there is not a thing on this earth that will matter enough for me to waste even thirty more seconds of my time. Elijah, what madness is this?" Klaus asks, turning towards his brother.
"Klaus," Hayley calls out, entering the mausoleum as the witches bring her to him. Little wolf? He thinks. And she sees the surprise on his face as plain as day. "You need to listen to them."
He stares at her for a few seconds, but it feels like an hour as she watches shock and confusion play across his face before he masks it, and amusement fills him.
He laughs, gesturing a hand toward Hayley, "You're all out of your minds if you think some liquor-fueled one-night stand—No offense, sweetheart.—means a thing to me." Why is the little wolf here? What the bloody hell is going on?
Hayley's eyes flutter before she drops her head, blinking away at the tears that start to form. These damn hormones, she thinks to herself. She knew that she didn't mean anything to him, but that did nothing to lessen the sting of his rejection.
"Marcel may be able to keep up from practicing real magic in this town," Sophie says as Klaus turns back toward her, "but as keepers of the balance, we still know when nature has cooked up something new. For example, I have a special gift of sensing when a girl is pregnant." She tells him, gesturing toward Hayley, whose eyes flit up to hers.
The arrogant smile slips off, and all amusement leaves his face as he tries to absorb what he just heard. "What?" He asks so softly it's a whisper.
"I know it's impossible," Hayley starts as he swiftly turns to her.
"What are you saying?" He asks, staring into her eyes to determine the truth for himself.
"Niklaus," Elijah calls out, causing Klaus to look at his brother. "The girl is carrying your child," He says with a slight smile.
Klaus gasps in shock before tensing and clenching his jaw as blue eyes meet hazel-green again.
"No," he says, shaking his head, "it's impossible."
"I said the same thing myself," Elijah interjects as Hayley presses her lips together, placing a hand on her hip.
Lies! He thinks. "This is a lie." he says, pointing at Hayley, "You're all lying." He tells them as he gestures at the tree of them.
"Vampires cannot procreate," Klaus says, stating the obvious.
"But werewolves can." Sophie retorts, putting Klaus at a loss for words. "Magic made you a vampire, but you were born a werewolf." At that, Klaus turns toward her, "You're the Original hybrid, the first of your kind. And this pregnancy," she says, looking back at Hayley, "is one of nature's loopholes."
Elijah looks over at his younger brother as Klaus struggles to accept this information before he turns around, pointing his finger at her. "You've been with someone else. Admit it!" He roars with watery eyes, coming toward her as Elijah moves in front of her putting his hand on his brother's chest to stop his advancement.
"Hey, I've spent days held captive in a fucking alligator bayou," Hayley tells him, causing Elijah to glance back at her, "because they think I'm carrying some magical miracle baby. Don't you think I would have 'fessed up if it wasn't yours?"
"My sister gave her life," Sophie tells them as Klaus turns to look at her again, "to perform the spell she needed to confirm this pregnancy. Because of Jane-Anne's sacrifice, the lives of Hayley and her baby are now in our control. We can keep them safe. Or we can kill them." Sophie reveals, causing Hayley and Elijah's eyes to widen in surprise.
"If you don't help us take down Marcel," she says, walking toward Klaus, "so help me. Hayley won't live long enough to see her first maternity dress." Sophie threatens, glancing over at Hayley.
"Wait, what?" Hayley asks worriedly.
"Enough of this." Elijah says, walking forward and turning to look at Sophie, "If you want Marcel dead, he's dead. I'll do it myself."
"No. We can't, not yet," Sophie says, shaking her head. "We have a clear plan we need to follow, and there are rules," Sophie commands, causing Klaus to growl lowly at her words.
"How dare you command me?" Klaus asks. His voice going frighteningly quiet as he whips around to face Sophie, his anger barely restrained, "Threaten me with what you wrongfully perceive to be my weaknesses! This is a pathetic deception." He shouts before stalking forward to hiss in his brother's ear, "I won't hear any more lies."
"Niklaus!" Elijah says, stopping Klaus in his tracks as he sighs and turns to face his brother. "Listen." He begs his brother as their eyes meet.
Taking a breath, Klaus turns toward Hayley, focusing on where her hand covers her abdomen, where he can hear a rapid heartbeat. Klaus listens in astonishment for a few long moments, mouth opening in undisguised shock before meeting Hayley's eyes.
They share the briefest of moments, and Hayley can almost see understanding in his eyes before he closes himself off again. He turns around to face his brother, a small smile of hope on Elijah's face, his eyes flitting over at the damned witch before looking at his brother once more.
"Kill her," Klaus tells him, causing Elijah to look at his brother in shock, he never thought his brother to be this cruel, "and the baby. What do I care?"
Hayley watches as he storms out of the mausoleum, "Screw this." She turns to leave but is stopped by the witches, "I'm out of here!"
"No one touches the girl. I'll fix this." Elijah tells Sophie as she nods, allowing him to leave before leaving to follow his brother.
The girl is carrying your child.
You will not walk away from this!
Elijah's words plague Klaus as he walks down the deserted street. He sits down on a bench, mind racing as he tries to come to terms with what he has learned today.
When he had gotten the letter from Katerina, he never imagined this. The little wolf with child. His child. He had asked her to stay with him in Mystic Falls, and she had left in her pursuit of family. How ironic.
Moments later Elijah arrives and sits beside him no doubt ready to give another one of his lectures.
"Are you here to give me another pep talk on the joys of fatherhood?" Klaus asks tiredly.
"I've said all I needed to say," Elijah replies. And again Elijah's words bounce around his head, The girl is carrying your child. You will not walk away from this!
