Kaito had to admit, he enjoyed watching his boyfriends solve cases, especially together, because of just how different they were from each other. It was like an accidental game of Good Cop, Bad Cop, except that they were detectives, not cops. And unless Kaito was the criminal being chased by them, watching them was just exhilarating, and admittedly, hilarious as well.
Especially now, when they were interrogating the prime suspect in a murder.
"Tell us where you were at the time of death," Shinichi said bluntly as soon as everyone had sat down.
The suspect, a woman named Kinoshita Hiroko, froze in horror. "Huh…?"
"It's so we can eliminate you as a suspect, ma'am," Saguru cut in with an apologetic look on his face.
"So?" Shinichi asked, impatient. He was clearly annoyed that their date had gotten interrupted by this murder.
"I was in the bathroom," Kinoshita admitted slowly.
"So you have no alibi," Shinichi said flatly.
Kinoshita looked even more horrified.
"I'm sorry, ma'am," Saguru spoke up. "It appears my fellow detective here isn't in the best of moods." He shot Shinichi a small smile, and Shinichi returned a glare. "We have to treat you as a suspect until proven otherwise, but that does not mean we are already thinking of you as the killer. Now, could you tell us your story again, from the top?"
As Kinoshita did so, Kaito continued to watch, amused.
"You were too harsh on all the suspects," Saguru chided Shinichi as the three of them sat outside a frozen yogurt place. The investigation had been wrapped up, and though the three of them couldn't continue their date at the restaurant they had been at before, they'd still wanted to do something fun.
"Well, my methods revealed the killer, did they not?" Shinichi questioned, still in a bad mood, but at least it wasn't as bad as before.
"I suppose they did," Saguru conceded. "But you may have traumatized many other innocent people in the process."
Kaito almost choked on his frozen yogurt in laughter. "Traumatized."
Saguru and Shinichi gave him a surprised look, as if they had forgotten he was there. Which, to be fair, they probably had. Murders were a detective's territory, and Kaito wasn't a detective. He had been useless for the entire investigation, just off to the side watching his boyfriends do their work. Always an entertaining pastime.
"Well, Kaito," Shinichi started. "Do you think my methods are too harsh?"
"They're funny," Kaito offered, suddenly having nothing more to say now that he was being put on the spot.
Shinichi groaned. Saguru looked amused.
"Well," Saguru said. "We can continue this conversation when, ah, Shinichi is in a better mood," he offered.
"Shut up," Shinichi muttered.
"Let's spend the night at the Kudo Mansion," Kaito offered. "It is the closest place."
Saguru nodded. "You're right."
"You want to spend the night with me, even when I'm supposedly in a bad mood?" Shinichi asked, raising his eyebrows.
"It's a mansion," Kaito said. "We can sleep anywhere in that house."
Saguru nodded again. "You're right about that too."
Shinichi sighed.
In the end, despite the fact that it was a mansion and they had basically all the rooms available to them, the three of them ended up sleeping in Shinichi's bed. When Kaito woke up, he was sandwiched between two detectives. Smiling fondly, he got up and went downstairs to make breakfast. Shinichi couldn't cook for the life of him, and Saguru was more used to having someone cook for him, so Kaito was always the one preparing meals for the three of them when they were together. As he prepared the toast, Kaito also made two cups of coffee and one cup of tea, just how each of them liked it.
Saguru, always punctual, came down first. He smiled gratefully at Kaito and took his tea and toast to the dining table before heading to the front door to get the newspaper. Kaito took his heavily sugared coffee and toast (yes, the toast was sugared as well) to his usual seat, and had already begun eating when Saguru returned. After ten minutes of the two of them eating and chatting, Shinichi finally showed up.
"I'm in a better mood," Shinichi announced. "But if our next date is interrupted by a murder again, this mood will not last."
Kaito grinned. "Oooh, we're having a date today? Fun!"
A flash of amusement appeared on Shinichi's face at that. "I was thinking somewhere more on the lines of next week, but that works for me."
Saguru looked startled. "I told my dad and Baaya that I would be home by dinner."
Kaito turned toward him. "Oh, I'm sure that you'll be home by then! We'll be having a lunch date at that new restaurant in Beika that Aoko recommended!"
"Nakamori-san was in Beika?" Shinichi muttered under his breath. Louder, he said, "Was she hanging out with Ran and Sonoko? They recommended a restaurant to me as well."
Saguru had a thoughtful look. "Well, if all three of them recommended it, it must be good. Let's go."
Kaito smiled and got up from his seat. "Let's raid Shinichi's closet for his best clothes!"
"Oi oi…"
Kaito's plans for the day were to go on the date, then go home and sleep. Unfortunately, the universe planned for Kaito's day to be the date, then murder, and then go home and sleep. How joyful.
It was the same routine as yesterday. Saguru and Shinichi sat in front of a young man named Fukumoto Naoki and questioned him on his whereabouts during the murder, with Shinichi's mood looking worse than the day before. Kaito almost laughed, but he had enough sense not to.
When Fukumoto proved to have an iron-tight alibi, backed by multiple strangers nearby, Saguru and Shinichi left him and joined Kaito once again. The magician grinned. "No luck?"
"None," Shinichi said flatly.
Kaito turned to Saguru. "And is Fukumoto-san traumatized for life by Shinichi's interrogations?"
Saguru had a look of fond amusement on his face. "I wouldn't be surprised."
"I'm cursed, aren't I," Shinichi wondered aloud.
Kaito huffed out a laugh. "Oh, darling, you just realized?"
