December 13: "Mrs. Hudson's Christmas cookie recipe has mysteriously disappeared." (from Wordwielder)

It was a dark and stormy night, and the estimable landlady of 221b Baker Street was baking bread. Why was she baking at night? Well, never you mind. Truth be told, she was having trouble sleeping, and baking always served to soothe her nerves. It had been a long week, beginning with Mr. Holmes entering pursued by three attackers. (Thankfully, there was no damage to the detective (or the drywall) that a little patching up could not put right.) And now today (Thursday), he had the gall to stumble into the flat bleeding from a knife wound to the shin! He was looking for Watson, who was covering for a friend at a different practice, and rather than allow Mrs. Hudson to take him to a proper doctor, he insisted that she fetch Watson's spare medical supplies and help him stitch him up himself.

Well, Mrs. Hudson had always had a strong stomach for blood, but this lifestyle Mr. Holmes was leading was really starting to wear on her nerves. She took the delicious-smelling loaf from the oven and sighed. She felt better but was still not up to sleeping. Perhaps a batch of biscuits would do the trick. It was December now; she could use that particular gingerbread recipe that the Doctor so loved. She rummaged through her recipe book (a disorderly mess; she always told herself she would make the time to organize it, but days, weeks, and years passed and she never did) and for the life of her, she could not find that Christmas biscuit recipe.

It was too late to justify disturbing her tenants to ask for a second set of eyes, and the maid had long since gone home for the evening. Mr. Holmes often kept odd hours, but the bloodloss had ensured he would slow down for at least one evening, and no doubt the Doctor was sound asleep by now as well. Oh, well. Perhaps all would become clear in the light of the morning. She would have to find another way to calm her frazzled nerves. Perhaps she would work on that scarf she'd been meaning to finish...
