Goodbye to a World
The demon realm has changed so much. I'm still getting used to all of it and it's been hard to adjust, but I know we'll be okay. I've got my friends and family, and I'm willing to accept help when I need it. I guess that means I've changed too, but this time for the better.
Luz sits on the cliffside, and this time she's not alone. She has her palisman egg next to her. It hasn't hatched, so she's patiently waiting for it to be ready. However long it takes and whatever it turns out to be, she'll love it no matter what.
Luz thinks about everything that's happened since they beat Belos and befriended The Collector. Everyone found their families and reunited with them, even Hunter decided he's going to live with Eda at The Owl House and be a student at Hexside. He'll get to be a normal kid just like he wanted.
It's bittersweet considering everyone's getting back to their old lives while some venture to create new ones. Luz hasn't talked with her Mom about whether or not she'll stay in the demon realm or go back with her. Saying goodbye to everyone, to the world she's come to call her home, just doesn't feel right.
Luz starts to tear up, thinking of all the incredible adventures and heartfelt moments she's had with everyone. Reminiscing and letting the memories of what was keep her company. It's going to be hard to let go, but it might be necessary to move forward.
Suddenly, Luz hears someone coming up from behind her.
"Hey kiddo, can I sit with you?" Eda asked.
Luz turns around and nods. Then Eda sits next to her and they look out at the sunset together. Luz continues to stare at the boiling waters below, thinking back to what could have happened if Eda wasn't there to save her.
"Do you remember the first thing I told you about the Boiling Isles? When we were flying above the Titan on Owlbert with King?" Eda asked.
Luz thinks back to that time and smiles. Part of her misses her young, bright eyed, naive self. She's starting to realize she's still in there, just a bit older and wiser now.
"Yeah, I do. That was back when I thought I was some kind of chosen one. You told me that if I waited around for a prophecy to make me special, I'd die waiting. And that's why I need to choose myself. Kind of dark when you think about it, but it's what I needed to hear at the time…Maybe that's what I need now." Luz replied.
Eda nods, remembering how far everyone's come since that time.
"Could be. All of your friends and family are moving on and changing, and I know you've had enough life changing adventures to realize that your choices determine the life you want to live and who you want to be. So, now that both our world and your world are safe, what are you going to choose?" Eda asked.
Luz thinks about this. It's a question she's pondered ever since she discovered the demon realm. One that doesn't have an easy answer, but it's a decision she'll have to make if she wants to move forward. No more running, it's time for her to face reality.
Before Luz can answer, Eda stops her.
"Wait, someone's coming and I think they can help you make that decision." Eda said.
Luz turns around to see Amity standing there, a sad smile on her face.
Eda leaves them both to talk.
Amity sits down next to Luz, looking down at the faded plant glyph patterns they drew together.
"Luz, I know you've got a lot on your mind right now and I just want you to know I'm here for you. Whether you decide to stay here or go back to the human realm…Just know that I'll support you, no matter what." Amity said.
Luz takes Amity's hand and they look out at the sunset together.
"Thanks Amity. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do. I wasn't happy in the human realm, and I found myself here with all of you. I feel like I belong here. I can't just let that go." Luz replied.
Amity draws a plant glyph pattern in the grass, taps it, and two pink flowers grow out of the ground. She takes one and gives the other to Luz.
"If this helps, someone very smart and creative once told me to get what you want, you have to know what you need." Amity said.
Luz smiles, taking the flower and holding it close. Then she looks at her palisman egg, it's as silent and still as ever.
"What do you think I should do, little buddy?" Luz asked.
"I think you should do what makes you happy." Camila said.
Luz turns around, surprised to see her Mom.
Camila sits down next to Luz and Amity gets up.
"I'll leave you two alone. Remember, I'll always be here for you." Amity said.
Amity gives Luz a kiss on the cheek. Then she walks away, holding the flower close to her heart.
Luz smiles, then looks to her Mom for advice.
"Mama, I don't know what to do…Should I go back to the human realm with you, or should I stay here in the demon realm with everyone else? I need you to be honest with me. Please…" Luz said.
Luz feels desperate, her anxiety and fear creeping in as she contemplates the biggest decision of her life. She knows they have the ability to travel between realms, once Alador gets another portal built, but she needs to make a choice on which place she'll call home.
"Mija, this is your decision. But, if you really want my honest opinion, I'll say this. I've noticed how much you've grown and how you've made a life here. You're thriving and you've finally found a place where you can be yourself, a place where you belong. That's all I've ever wanted for you, even if it means saying goodbye." Camila replied.
Luz starts to tear up, giving her Mom a hug and realizing how much her Mom loves her. So much so that she's willing to let her go so she can be happy.
"Thank you, Mama. I guess this means I'm staying in the demon realm. I'm going to miss you. I love you so much." Luz said.
"I love you too." Camila replied.
Suddenly, Luz's palisman egg starts to move. Luz watches it closely, excited to see what it will be. Then, it uncoils itself, turning into a snake with wings. It slithers to Luz, and she holds it in her hand. It's just like her pet snake and the ones she'd find in her backyard growing up.
"Hey little buddy! Welcome to the world. I'm Luz, it's so nice to meet you." Luz said.
Luz's palisman gives her a friendly smile and changes into a staff. She holds it, feeling proud as she stands up with her Mom and looks out at the sunset.
"Wow, that's incredible, Luz. What are you going to name it?" Camila asked.
Luz thinks about this for a moment, then the perfect name comes to her in an instant. The book series that got her into fantasy and led her to the very place she now calls her home. The witch who started it all.
"Their name is Azura. Full name, Azura Manny Noceda-Clawthorne." Luz said.
Camila starts to cry a bit, hearing her long lost husband's name brings back some grief, but it's a good kind of melancholic feeling, very bittersweet.
Luz takes her Mom's hand, tearful but happy that everything has come full circle.
"Thank you, Mija. Your Father would be so proud of you." Camila said.
Luz smiles, wiping her tears away as she looks out at the sunset. Ready to venture out into the unknown.
Camila smiles, letting go of Luz's hand.
"Go, be free. I'm proud of you, good witch Luzura." Camila said.
Luz waves one last goodbye, a big smile on her face as she gets ready to fly on her palisman. Then, she does it, jumping off the cliff and closing her eyes, embracing the fall.
Suddenly, Luz opens her eyes and sees the warm colored sky all around her. Excitement and happiness coursing through her as the thrill seeker in her laughs, enjoying this moment. Letting go, finally free to be herself in a world that accepts her for who she is, weirdness and all.
Luz slows down, looking down at the Boiling Isles from a different angel and she begins to realize how beautiful her new home truly is. Just like Eda said at the start of her journey, and how fitting she ends her story with a new beginning.
Luz takes one final look at her home before heading back.
"A new life. I'm ready and I can't wait for what comes next." Luz said.
The End
