December 24: "It's a wonderful life, Holmes edition" (from Wordwielder)

Part 5 (final part)

A deal of sweet talking and promises of a signed book later, Dr. Watson was allowed to take the boy with him.

"Come to Baker Street with me," said Watson. "We shall wrap your gift and see about giving it to Holmes."

Mrs. Hudson provided the paper, Watson helped Wiggins wrap the gifts.

"Now," said Watson. "Holmes has not been himself lately. Do not be offended if he is unkind."

The boys nodded, and followed him up to the sitting room.

"Ah, Watson. You're back. And the Irregulars too." Holmes lay on his back on the settee, sitting room filled with smoke. "The criminal classes are too dull by far, these days. What use am I anymore? Even the bumbling lot at Scotland Yard could take my place. Perhaps all of London would be better off with me gone altogether."

"Nonsense," Watson replied vehemently. "You're an invaluable part of London, and have touched many lives."

Bailey spoke quietly. "If it weren't for you and the Doctor, I'd be in jail on Christmas Eve."

"And all of us would be colder and hungrier," Tom added.

"And all of London far less safe," finished Watson.

Holmes sat up slowly, a sad smile on his lips. "You're right, of course. I've just been in one of those moods of late. Thank you, Watson, boys."

It's just an outline of a parallel to It's a Wonderful Life, and moves too quickly, but I hope you still enjoyed this and the four parts before it.

I ran out of word count before I could include Holmes opening the present but I'm sure he likes it. The real gift is the people in his life and how they've helped one another. Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!
