Chapter One:
"Are you completely mad?!" Harry shouted after realising that Ginny was still with him. He got up off the ground and dusted his backside off, all while fuming over this. He liked Ginny, but he didn't want to feel like he had to babysit her.
"It was an accident!" She insisted. "I must have fallen in. I don't remember what happened because we were being attacked by Death Eaters!" She would have been more mad if she weren't so shocked that they were actually here. It was dark, so it was hard to see some things, and it was cold. There was an eeriness in the air that made Ginny shudder with an anxiety she's never felt before.
Harry rolled his eyes at her but said nothing in response. He was infuriated with her still, and there was nothing he could say. So he started walking, and when Ginny noticed she had to hurry to catch up with him. "Try to stay out of the way." He mumbled to her, and she quietly agreed. Ron would be furious to know that she had come along with him, because it was a dangerous thing to do. Harry was certain that there would be some danger involved somehow.
Some trees shook from the wind, and they made sort of a hissing sound that caused Ginny to move in closer to Harry. He glanced over at her and raised an eyebrow. It was very rare that Ginny ever got scared, but Harry was understanding towards her fear because he felt it too. She had sort of a blank expression on her face, her eyes were widened, and her heart was pounding. Having Harry by her side did provide some comfort as he was more used to these kinds of situations, but it didn't help her completely. A fear of the unknown still lingered above her head.
They soon approached a house, and the lights were on inside. Ginny didn't understand why they were here yet, but her eyes landed upon a tilted mailbox with the last name "Potter" on it. Her heartbeat finally slowed down, and she bared a more sympathetic expression towards him now. There was hope on his face, and a childlike wonder. This would be the first time ever meeting his parents.
"Harry," Ginny softly spoke. She placed a hand gently on his shoulder blade and kept it there as she continued. "Are you sure about this?"
He nodded his head and replied, "Yes. Stay here, I'll be right back." Ginny stayed in place despite still feeling uneasy about being alone. She glanced around her and then wrapped her arms around her torso for some warmth, as the night was only getting colder. Every now and then she would glance back towards the house just to see what was going on, but nothing seemed to be happening. It was relatively quiet all throughout the neighbourhood with the exception of the wind and some cats nearby.
Meanwhile, after entering the house Harry noticed everything was in a state of disarray. The table was knocked over, pictures were dangling off the walls, and a lamp was flickering in the corner. He proceeded upstairs to see the extent of the damage, and his heart ached at the thought of not making it in time. That seemed impossible though since his desire was to save his parents, so it only made sense for them to travel back in time just before they were killed. This was most certainly their house, as the pictures on the walls were of James, Lily, and some even with baby Harry. It felt so weird looking at himself at such a young age versus how he was now. Even if they were just pictures, it was still weird.
Harry felt a great sense of distress and defeat, and he wandered back downstairs to try and collect his thoughts. His emotions were all over the place as he contemplated the possibility of not being able to do what he set out to do, thus wasting his time and resources when Voldemort was destroying his life in the present. Perhaps messing with time proved to be a far more complicated task than he anticipated.
Ginny grew increasingly more anxious whilst waiting outside, but eventually Harry appeared in the doorway with a rather defeated look on his face. His hands were in his pockets, and dark marks still stained his cheeks from the rubble he ate back home. It was hard to believe that they were in an entirely different realm now than they were before, and that whilst they were here trying to change the past, the future was currently happening. Of all the people, Ginny Weasley just happened to get caught up in it. All she was doing was trying to look out for his well being since he appeared to be unhinged, and for good reason. Harry's adolescence was absolute hell because of Voldemort.
"Harry?" Ginny's voice squeaked as he seemingly ignored her and walked right past. He was walking briskly, but where, she did not know. "Harry, wait!" She cried out as she started to run. Harry sighed, and then he stopped to wait for her. It wasn't that she was necessarily a burden anymore, but more that he just felt really knocked down. His hopes weren't very high, and he felt quite embarrassed. He thought this would really work.
He held out his arm, and she looped hers through without hesitation. They extended eye contact momentarily before looking forward again to continue walking. Ginny still didn't understand what was happening, but she recognised Harry's need for silence. So she looked around them as they walked, and thought about what would happen now. How were they going to get back? Was the Mirror of Erised the only portal? Did it even exist yet? She happened to glance behind them just because, but she noticed a figure looming somewhat closely behind. It made her stomach drop, and her heart leap.
Ginny leaned in closer to Harry, and his nostrils were filled with the scent of her shampoo. "Harry," she whispered, "don't be obvious, but somebody is following us." Right after that Harry jerked his neck to look behind them, and she scolded him by giving him a slap against his shoulder blade. "I said don't make it obvious!"
He gripped her arm tightly and forced her to walk a bit faster now, and he just mumbled, "Don't stop walking." There was nothing to add to this because it was inherently clear to both of them. Neither knew if they were in some sort of danger for certain yet, but it seemed likely given the circumstances. Harry felt guilty for Ginny being involved in his mess even though it was accidental, or so she claimed. He wondered if it weren't actually accidental at all, but intentional instead. Regardless of his feelings, he didn't want something bad to happen to her or them. That being said there was only so much that he could do to avoid tragedy, and all he could do was hope that Ginny didn't somehow end up being in the line of fire.
The end of the street was approaching much sooner than they anticipated, and Harry didn't have a plan or a way out. When they finally reached the end, Harry and Ginny turned around to face their stalker. Harry inadvertently held her a bit closer, just because, but Ginny wasn't complaining. He wanted to apologise to her, but the words simply never came out. He hoped she could somehow read his mind and be able to tell that that's what he was thinking. If not, then she would die hating him.
Voldemort had grown tired of chasing the Potters around only to come up short every single time. He was due for a killing at any moment, and the Potters had been nothing but trouble for him. The Prophecy had been revealed, and he knew what he had to do. Peter Pettigrew cowered at his side the entire time that he led him to Godric's Hollow, and Voldemort basked in that feeling. He loved it when people feared him and cowered. Peter was exceptionally good at that.
"Well?!" Voldemort raised his voice. "Where are they, you fool!"
"They were here! I swear!" Peter was certain James and Lily had been sent here to hide thanks to Dumbledore. Did he feel sorry for ratting his friends out? Sure, but he had a promise to keep to the Dark Lord.
The house was empty, and they turned it practically upside down for any sign of hiding or magic. Lily, James, and Harry simply weren't there. They left the house shortly after, but what they found lurking in the streets piqued their interest considerably. Peter clutched to the Dark Lord's robes and pointed excitedly for some reason. "Look, my Lord! There they are- James and Lily Potter!" All they saw was dark hair and red hair, and that was more than enough to convince Voldemort. He happily laughed, and continued to follow them until the end of the street. Under a bright streetlamp their faces were finally revealed, and Voldemort was pleased to see Harry's resemblance to his father, as well as Ginny's to Lily.
Harry and Ginny cowered as Voldemort raised his wand towards them, and Peter fell behind so not to witness the deaths of his friends. Voldemort took much pleasure in this, and it was quite obvious. "Avada Ked-!"
"ACCIO BROOMSTICK!" Ginny suddenly shouted over Voldemort's curse, and the five of them remained dumbfounded for a few moments until some random broomstick appeared. It hovered in front of them before Harry and Ginny got aboard, and then both Peter and Voldemort began spewing spell after spell at them as they flew away. Luckily, Ginny was an excellent flyer thanks to Quidditch.
They narrowly escaped, but now Voldemort was determined to hunt them down.
