Prompts: In the city (Hades Lord of the Dead) A glass globe (Stutley Constable)
I'm afraid I ran out of steam, but I'm back to finish it off! I wasn't able to come up with something for every prompt I have left, but I'm getting to the end!
After a brief conference with Inspector Lestrade, Holmes and I returned to London the next day by the morning train. The sky was grey above and snow swirled by our window throughout our day-long journey. The whole countryside seemed to be a miniature scene set inside a glass globe, or perhaps it was we, warmly ensconced inside our cabin, encased in delicate glass.
The early winter night had fallen by the time we pulled into the station in the heart of London. We shook off the weariness of our long journey to make our way through the press of the endless flow of travellers from one end of our island to the other. As we stepped outside into the dark, the sharp air caught me by surprise despite my woollen scarf and I blinked away the last of the weary haze.
Beside me, Holmes gave a sharp bark of laughter. "It appears the northern weather has followed us even to our unseasonable city."
The cobblestones beneath our feet were buried in slush that was beginning to take on the dangerous slickness of ice, telling of a temperamental day of rain turned to ice and sleet, but sure enough, pure, crystalline snow drifted down upon us from above.
I chuckled and accepted Holmes's outstretched arm, holding on a little tighter than I might for an ordinary stroll, in the hope of keeping both of us on our feet. The snow already speckled his sleek, black hair, making it seem peppered with a distinguished grey and his overcoat took on the mottled hue of heavy furs.
"If you would do me the honour of accompanying me on this fine evening, I may be able to provide you with a warm fire and, if our landlady is so obliging, a hot supper," Holmes proclaimed with an inviting gleam in his bright eyes.
I could only answer, "Certainly, lead on."
And so we set off through the city, back to our Baker Street flat.
