HILDA NEVER CARED MUCH about the language of flowers when she was younger, but when she started university and became roommates her sophomore year with a girl named Marianne who was double-majoring in Botony and Zoology, it became a part of her life, both when the two students were just friends and then when they eventually became a couple.
Marianne's side of the dorm had a multitude of books, and a lot of them if not on horses or animal breeds were about flower symbolism; whenever Marianne wasn't up to her nose in essays on animal behavior and projects on endangered plants and Hilda wasn't struggling to finish dresses before the deadline (she regretted not taking it seriously when people warned her a major in fashion wasn't as easy as shopping) she would read pages and pages to Hilda on each and every flower's meaning and usage.
It was a nice way for von Edmund and Goneril to spend their free time together, but it especially helped Hilda on finding a first-year anniversary gift for her girlfriend their junior year—a dress Hilda made with the design of lilies and roses, the former because they were Marianne's favorite and the latter because they meant romance, though everyone knows that about roses—which Marianne later wore when she met Hilda's parents and brother Holst for the first time.

ORIGINAL ENDING AN FROM AO3: I feel like Hilda would go into fashion as a major because she thinks being a fashionista and label-knowledgable it would be as easy as shopping just to get overwhelmed at first with at all the work she does but eventually ends up getting the hang of it. Marianne no doubt would probably end up majoring in something relating to flowers or animals.
