Chapter One: Helping Strangers
"Certainly is beautiful today." Alexis says as she is walking beside Giulia as Giulia is pulling a cart of fish on a bike.
"Yeah. After I'm finished we can go do something if you want to. I know we haven't done much since I've been training." Giulia says.
"I'd love that. Hey look." Alexis says as she and Giulia see Ercole bullying some boys.
"Hey! Ercole basta!" Giulia shouts as she and Alexis immediately go over.
"Leave them alone!" Alexis says angrily.
"Oh look who's here. Spewlia and the little nobody. Wow. That's how you're training for the race?" Ercole asks as he chuckles.
"Your reign of terror is coming to an end!" Giulia shouts as she holds up a fish to Ercole.
"Coming to an end. You mean like a year ago? When you quit in the middle of the race? Because you couldn't stop throwing up?" Ercole asks.
"I didn't quit. They made me stop." Giulia says annoyedly.
"I think that is worse. Now go away. I'm having fun with my new friends." Ercole says as he looks at the boys.
"Not a chance. They're coming with us." Alexis says.
"Hop on. I could use the extra weight." Giulia says as Alexis and the two boys get on the cart.
"Fine. Go start a club. For losers!" Ercole shouts as the group leaves.
"You know you two should really avoid Ercole. He isn't the friendliest person in town." Alexis says as she looks at the two boys.
"Sto imbecille thinks he can be a jerk 'cause he keeps winning the race. Which he shouldn't even get to do anymore 'cause he's too old and too much of a jerk! You know we underdogs have to look out for each other right?" Giulia asks as the two boys look at her in confusion.
"What's under the dogs?" A green eyed boy asks.
"No, no. Underdogs. It means kids who are different in some way and because of that are looked down on by others. It's an expression." Alexis says as the two boys get off the cart.
"So are you in town for the race? The Portorosso Cup? Well good talk. I gotta deliver these. Always be training you know?" Giulia asks before she and Alexis leave.
*Timeskip*
"Hey uh Spewlia?" The green eyed boy asks as he and the other boy come up as Alexis and Giulia are delivering fish.
"Giulia. My name is Giulia. This is my sister Alexis." Giulia says annoyedly as Alexis smiles politely.
"Okay. When you race in a cup what do you get?" The green eyed boy asks.
"Prize money along with a trophy." Alexis says.
"Oh. Okay." The green eyed boy says as Alexis and Giulia continue to deliver fish before the two boys come up to them again.
"Hello again." The green eyed boy says.
"Ciao." Giulia says.
"Can we turn the money into something else?" The green eyed boy asks.
"Something like… That." The other boy says as he gestures to a brand new vespa.
"Uh no... but it could get you that." Alexis says as she gestures to the more worn down vespa before she and Giulia begin to leave only to stop hearing them say they'll win the race.
"You'll have to beat Ercole." Alexis says.
"Okay so we'll beat Ercole." The green eyed boy says confidently.
"Huh. Really? Thinks he'll beat Ercole. This guy. First of all get in line! Every summer that jerk makes my life miserable along with my sister's. So no one's taking him down unless it's me! Second this isn't any old race. It's an epic, grueling, traditional Italian triathlon. Swimming, cycling and eating pasta. So you'd need a teammate." Giulia says.
"Well we'll figure it out. Thanks human girls." The green eyed boy says as the group begins to part ways only for the boys to come back immediately.
"Hey Spew… Girls!" The green eyed boy says.
"Oi." Alexis says.
"Congratulations. You're joining our team." The green eyed boy says.
"Beg your pardon." Alexis says.
"I race alone." Giulia says sternly.
"And I don't race." Alexis says.
"But we could be under the dogs too." The other boy says.
"Hey it's okay Luca. She'd rather do the whole race alone again. Maybe this time she won't throw up as much." The green eyed boy says as Giulia stops and looks at him.
"Uh hang on. You wanna be on my team eh? Let's see what you got." Giulia says sternly.
*Timeskip*
"Santa mozzarella." Giulia says as the group is watching the younger boy try to ride a bike while failing.
"Kid eyes up. Just keep your eyes up and watch what's in front of you. You looking down is what is making you fall." Alexis says as the boy does as told before getting the hang of the bike.
"Whoa. I'm doing it." The boy says happily as Alexis smiles at him slightly.
"So can we be on the team?" The green eyed boy asks.
"Gonna take more than this." Alexis says before Giulia begins making various obstacles for the boy as he then later falls off the bike due to an obstacles
"What about you? Can you swim at least?" Giulia asks as she looks at the green eyed boy.
"Yeah. I'm amazingly bad at swimming." The green eyed boy says as the other boy elbows him.
"You can't swim. You can barely ride a bike." Giulia says in annoyance.
"Where are you guys from anyway?" Alexis asks.
"We're not telling you our secrets! We're runaways." The green eyed boy says.
"Runaways?" Alexis asks as Giulia gives an unsure look.
"I don't know ragazzi…" Giulia says unsurely.
"Please? My family was gonna send me somewhere horrible. Away from everything I love. But if we win this race well we can be free." The younger boy says.
"My life's great. I'm just helping him out." The green eyed boy says.
"Just give me one more chance." The younger boy says pleadingly.
"No. You guys want it just as bad as I do. You have the hunger. That's the most important thing." Giulia says.
"I'm definitely hungry." The green eyed boy says.
"Perfetto! You eat, you bike and I swim. My sister will cheer for us on the sidelines. Underdogs?" Giulia asks.
"Underdogs." The boys say in union happily.
"Now we just need the entry fee." Alexis says.
"From our dad." Giulia says nervously.
