10th December prompt from W. Y. Traveller: Market.

Market

"Oh Holmes, just look! Observe the date!

How time has flown! We're running late!

The seventeenth, it's mid December;

Should have been the tenth, remember,

The day we join the festive scene

With lots and lots and lots of green;

More green than we have ever seen!

It might be festive frippery

But oh dear chap; we need a tree

We really, truly need a tree

To decorate, yes, you and me

Then watch it twinkle merrily

And smoke and chat and drink our tea.

The days will pass just splendidly."

Holmes sighed and smoked and rolled his eyes

At Watson's plea, "Yes, how time flies;

And as we both need exercise,

We'll head off now down Baker Street.

I'll do this as your Christmas treat,

To make your festive scene complete.

To market, Watson, off we go

To find the green amidst the snow;

Amidst the lots and lots of snow.

We must be careful how we go,

It's icy underfoot, you know."

So, off they went, down Baker Street,

For Watson's favourite Christmas treat,

Negotiating snow and ice,

(And only slipping once or twice)

Past stalls which smelled of orange, spice,

And chestnuts roasting; all things nice!

And baked potatoes, piping hot,

Until they reached a quiet spot;

A cart, stacked high with lots of green;

Long boughs of holly set between

Bright mistletoe. and near the top

The perfect tree, "Oh Holmes, please stop!

We've found the perfect tree, please stop!

It's tall, and has no needle-drop!"

~0~

Holmes was, of course, inclined to stop

And checked the tree most carefully

From top to toe, then finally

He spoke, " Dear friend, I must agree,

We've found the perfect Christmas tree.

It's just the one for you and me.

So I shall pay this man a fee,

Then back to Baker Street we'll go,

Still mindful of the ice and snow,

It's still quite slippery, you know."

So back to Baker Street, with tree,

Went two companions, carefully;

Their trip had ended happily,

With pipes and chat and cups of tea.

No adverse incidents this time;

No trees on fire, no unsolved crime,,

No thieves to catch, no plot to thwart

No murderer, no blackguard sought,

No injuries at all to mend

No arguments with loyal friend.

Yes, all went well, but don't forget

The season isn't over yet…
