23rd December prompt from cjnwriter: Christmas tree

Christmas Tree

Here is the Christmas tree; brightly bedecked

~0~

Here is the angel on top of the tree;

With a cane and a Gladstone bag, held jauntily.

~0~

Here are three bats, fast asleep overhead,

And here are lit candles in white and in red,

And here are no baubles; glass test tubes instead.

~0~

Here is a bucket of water in place,

And here is a thick flame-proof blanket…in case,

And a pail of dry sand at the Christmas tree base,

And an ex army doctor; a smile on his face.

~0~

Here is some tinsel adorning the walls,

And surrounding the print of the Reichenbach falls,

And an ivy-wreathed noose , which delights and appals,

And port and mince pies, in case anyone calls.

And green, lots of green…they, indeed, decked the halls.

~0~

Here are some presents; well wrapped, gaily tied

With green velvet ribbons, and holly applied,

And everything everyone hoped for inside.

Here, the past fates of their trees are defied;

No fires, no explosions, no guests terrified…

And here's Holmes' expression of smugness and pride.

~0~

Here is a knock on the festive front door,

And here's Mr Sherman, with parcels, and more;

For here is the skitter of paws on the floor;

His loyal companion, and here's what he saw…

~0~

Here, 'neath the tree is a tortoiseshell cat.

Declining convention to sit on the mat;

He's too independent a feline for that.

~0~

Here's the cat moving with seconds to spare,

And test tubes and candles and sand everywhere.

~0~

And…here is the Christmas tree, Toby has wrecked.
