26th Dec Prompt 2022 from YoughaltheJust: Holmes meets [a famous historical figure from your country and/or of your choice].
Tales
Tales are tales,
And facts are facts,
And ne'er the twain shall meet.
Till two opposing views collide
In a flat in Baker Street…

Lestrade is out with his Yarders bold, to track a killer down;
He has searched in vain through the vilest lanes, the worst in London Town,
Where the alleys ring as the drunkards sing and the smoke-stained lights burn low
And the cobbles are trod by those spurned by God and nobody sane would go.

He had picked up the trail on his friend's advice, on the great detective's word;
They have chased their prey every night and day, but naught have they seen nor heard;
There has been no rest on this parlous quest; since the fiend's first kill was found;
He has struck thrice more, such a dreadful score, and has swiftly gone to ground.

They are focused now, on their one true chance, from the clues Sherlock Holmes has gleaned;
There are lives at stake, if they makes mistakes in the hunt for this heartless fiend,
They are closing in, there are lights within an address the detective marked;
There are few who might be abroad this night, full of fear which this crime has sparked…

The speaker stops, then he turns to Holmes. "This is how I'd begin your case;
Let your readers thrill, at your nerves and skill, for romance has a vital place."
Holmes replies with heat, "Though I'm pleased to meet the author my friend admires
And this might, I know suit your tales, Just So; but clear fact's what my work inspires."

The doctor laughs at his friend's response; at his stubborn, rigid stance.
"Holmes, just take a look at his Jungle Books, give his writing style a chance.
Let this poet's pen, tell your story then you can bask in your new-found fame.
With his words you see, I can guarantee, that the world won't forget your name."

Holmes brief response to the pair is clear; "Your suggestion is doomed to fail."
The author sighs, "Why not compromise? Let the doctor record each tale.
He's a science man, I am sure he can make your life's work a great success."
There's a lengthy pause, as Holmes checks for flaws, then a history-defining "Yes!"
