Chapter 6: Combat Exercise

At a training facility in Japan

Mario Luigi and Peach are lead into the building by a hero association representative. As they enter into what looks like an arena with lab equipment scattered about they are met by Gang Orca. A tall well-built man in a white business suit whose quirk gives him the features of a killer whale.

"Welcome Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach. I am Gang Orca and I will be administering your provisional tests today."

"Tests?" Mario Luigi and Peach asked.

"Yes." The representative then came forward. "We have heard about Nezu's request for you to help in teaching the students of U.A.. While we don't have a problem with that per se we still need you to have at least a provisional license so you can use your powers at the school."

"I see, and these licenses let us use our powers and abilities, but only at the school?" Peach asked.

"A provisional license will also let you act as a pro hero if there is an incident near your location. You don't have to being that you're guests here in this country, but I have a feeling that you wouldn't let a call for help go unanswered." Gang Orca responded.

The Mario gang began to rub the back of their heads when Gang Orca spoke up.

"No need to be embarrassed about it. It is quite noble of you all to want to help even when you don't have to. That is the mark of a true hero."

With that said Mario and his friends followed Gang Orca into the testing grounds.

At U.A.

Izuku Midoriya was in his class with the rest of his classmates waiting for the teacher to arrive.

"I AM HERE!" Was heard as the doors to the class opened with All Might coming him with his chest puffed out. "Coming through the door like a hero!"

"Hey look it's All Might!" Denki Kaminari, a boy with an electric quirk, said.

"So he is a teacher, man this year is gonna be awesome." Eijiro Kirishima, a boy who can harden his skin, said in excitement.

"And he's wearing his silver age costume." Tsuyu Asui, a girl with a frog quirk, stated.

"I'm getting goosebumps it's so retro." Mashirao Ojiro, a boy with a large tail, said.

All Might strutted to the desk before he turned to the class.

"Welcome to the most important class at U.A. high. Think of it as heroing 101, here you will learn the basics of being a pro and what it means to fight for good. Now let's get into it, this lesson will pull no punches." All Might said as he pulled out a cue card that said battle.

"Combat training." Bakugo said with glee.

"Real combat?" Midoriya asked with concern.

"But one of the keys to being a hero is looking good."

Some slots in one of the walls of the classroom slid out revealing suitcases with numbers on them.

"These costumes were designed based on your specifications you on your applications before school started. So get suited up and meet me at training ground beta."

At training ground beta

"You know, they say that clothes make the pros ladies and gentlemen. And behold you are the proof." All Might said as the students walked out in their hero outfits.

Bakugo came out with a black muscle shirt with an large orange x on it, along with black pants and boots. He also had gauntlets shaped like grenades and a black eye mask with the tips ending in the shape of an explosion. Iida came out in full, aerodynamic silver armor and had special equipment on his legs. Uraraka came out in a skin tight black and pink bodysuit with pink wrist guards and pink knee high boots.

"Now, shall we get started? You bunch of newbies." All Might said before he looked around. "Hold on, it seems we're missing someone."

"Right here!" Midoriya said as he ran out to join the rest of his class.

His outfit was a light green jumpsuit with red tennis shoes and white gloves. He also had two large ears on his head that were meant to imitate All Might's hair, but instead looked like giant rabbit ears. And a face guard meant to imitate All Might's smile.

"Bunny?" Most of the class thought when they saw his outfit.

"Okay then, let's get going."

All Might was leading the class to the monitoring room when Uraraka approached Midoriya.

"Hey Midoriya, is that really the outfit you got from the support course?" She asked.

"No, I brought this one from home."

"Really? But you could've had a better one made for you by professional technicians."

"I know but my mom made this for me as a congratulations gift from my mom. I know the support course could have made me a better costume, but I felt like I owed it to her to wear the one she made for me."

"Wow, that's so cool Midoriya."

"Thanks." Midoriya said while blushing.

Once they reached the monitor room All Might turned to the students.

"All right! Now here's the low down, you all will be facing each other in teams of two. One team will be villains and the other team will be the heroes."

"Isn't this a bit advanced?" Asui asked.

"The best learning is done on the battlefield." All Might replied.

Suddenly all the other students began to ask questions quickly overwhelming All Might.

"All right now calm down everybody. Okay here's the scenario. A group of villains has taken a nuclear weapon and hidden it somewhere in the building. The heroes are to go in and neutralize them. The hero team wins if they either capture the villains or the weapon. On the other hand the villains win if they capture the heroes or hold on to the weapon until time runs out. Now time is limited so to determine your teams we will be drawing lots."

"Sir, is that the best way to pair us up?" Iida asked.

"Actually it makes perfect sense." Midoriya answered. "Think about it, out in the field you wouldn't have the luxury of choosing your partners in an emergency and would have to work with whatever heroes are nearby."

"I see, please excuse my rudeness." Iida said as he bowed to All Might.

"Okay, let's begin."

All of the students drew lots to determine their team members. Midoriya managed to get Uraraka as a partner.

"Wow, how lucky for us." Uraraka said in her cheery and bubbly tone.

"Yeah." Midoriya sputtered out as his face grew bright red.

"Good, now the first teams to face each other are these two."

All Might then drew two balls from a box to reveal the teams. One was Midoriya and Uraraka and the other was Bakugo and Iida.

"Okay, Midoriya and Uraraka will be the heroes while Bakugo and Iida will be the villains. Now you will each receive a roll of capture tape. If you manage to wrap your opponent in it then they are considered out of the battle. You'll have ten minutes and you are free to use your quirks to attack but if things go to far I will stop the match. Okay villain team go in to the designated building and get ready."

Bakugo and Iida then went into the building while Midoriya and Uraraka waited outside with blueprints of the building layout. Once they got inside Bakugo and Iida followed the blueprints they were given to find the bomb.

"So this is the weapon." Iida said while approaching a missile. He then tapped it. "Fake, obviously."

Iida then turned to his partner who was staring silently at the door to the room.

"Hey, do you think that nerd actually has a quirk?" Bakugo asked.

"You saw him during the tests yesterday. How else would he have passed them."

This only infuriated Bakugo.

"Damn Deku! Were you just pretending to be quirkless this whole time? Trying to make me look like a fool." Bakugo thought.

"You know, you seem to be unusually upset at Midoriya for some reason. Did something happen between you two?"

"Shut it four eyes!"

Iida just stood in silence at Bakugo's outburst. Meanwhile outside Midoriya and Uraraka were studying the blueprints they had.

"Man, their are so many floors. Do they really expect us to memorize this?" Uraraka aske Midoriya.

However Midoriya was just staring at the building.

"Midoriya?"

"He's going to come after me."

"You mean Bakugo?"

"Yeah."

"Why does he hate you so much?"

"I wish I knew. It could be because I was quirkless when we were younger."

"Really?"

"Yeah, I didn't get my quirk until recently and I think that angers him more than anything."

Midoriya then closed his eyes and thought of a plan.

"Okay Uraraka, here's the plan. When the exercise starts Kacchan is going to come after me. So while I'm dealing with him you get the bomb."

"What about Iida?"

"More than likely he'll stay to protect the bomb so be ready for him."

"Right."

"All right, Hero team enter!" All Might said through the intercoms.

Midoriya and Uraraka entered the building through the window on the second floor while Bakugo immediately left to find Midoriya. While going through the halls Uraraka turned to Midoriya.

"Are you sure Bakugo will come for you?"

As if summoned by his name, Bakugo flew around the corner.

"DEKU!"

He shouted as he charged towards them. Midoriya quickly grabbed Uraraka and dodged the incoming explosion.

"Uraraka go! Find the bomb, I'll deal with him." Midoriya ordered.

"Right!" Uraraka answered back as she ran forward.

Bakugo and Midoriya then faced each other.

"Remember you two, you only need to wrap your opponent in capture tape to take them out of the fight." All Might said through the intercoms.

But Bakugo didn't care and Midoriya had a feeling he wouldn't get the chance to wrap Bakugo.

"I'm going to show everyone Deku." Bakugo said confusing Midoriya. "I'm going to expose how weak you really are. Right here, right now Deku."

Midoriya began to back up in fear, but then he remembered all of his training that he did with Mario and All Might. He then raised his hands in a fighting stance.

"Bring it on Kacchan!"

Bakugo then charged at Midoriya with a right hook, but Midoriya evaded the attack and grabbed Bakugo's arm and threw him to the ground.

"What the hell? How did you do that Deku?"

Bakugo stood up in bewilderment at what just happened.

"You remember my hero journal right Kacchan? The one you tried to destroy. I wrote down everything I could about heroes and their fighting styles in there, including yours. And I know that you always start the fight with a right hook."

Midoriya then looked straight at Bakugo.

"So you can call me Deku all you want, but Deku is now the name of a hero!"

"You damn nerd."

Bakugo glared at Midoriya while charging up explosions in his hands. Back with Uraraka, she made it to the fourth floor where the bomb was. She was hiding behind a pillar while watching Iida. Iiad seemed to be lost in thought.

"Why is Bakugo acting like this? It is unbecoming of a hero, but wait. That's right, right now I'm not a hero, I'm a villain. So that means I must fully embrace villainy."

"I am a villain, with dastardly plans to uproot all of hero society!" Iida said in his best villain voice.

Uraraka found this so funny that she couldn't help but let out a small chuckle as well as most of the class in the monitoring room. Unfortunately Iida heard her.

"Aha! There you are do gooder!"

"Ah crap."

"So you have come to face your doom. You may think you will be successful but..."

Uraraka then used her quirk to float and went for the bomb.

"I wasn't done yet!" Iida said in shock.

"Sorry Iida."

Uraraka was about to touch the bomb, but Iida had used his quirk, engine, which gives him engines in his legs for accelerated movement, to move the bomb to the other side of the room before Uraraka could grab it.

What?" Uraraka said as she landed on the ground.

Iiad was wiping his forehead in relief.

"That was too close. It won't be that easy hero."

Uraraka leapt at the bomb again, however when Iida moved the bomb Uraraka had twirled in the air and changed her momentum and direction and was once again moving toward the bomb. Although shocked by this maneuver Iida quickly recovered and moved the bomb before Uraraka could touch it.

"Nice try hero." Iida boasted.

"Dang it." Uraraka muttered under her breath.

While she was contemplating a plan to reach the bomb Midoriya and Bakugo were still fighting. Midoriya was knocked to the ground by an explosion and Bakugo was about to land another on him. But Midoriya had rolled out of the way and delivered a counter punch into Bakugo's gut sending him skidding down the halls. Bakugo was panting while giving Midoriya a death glare when his gauntlet glowed red.

"Finally, it's ready." Bakugo stated.

Midoriya was confused as Bakugo gave a sadistic grin.

"These gauntlets aren't just for show you damn nerd. You remember how my quirk works right?"

"Yeah, your sweat contains a substance similar to nitroglycerine that you can detonate in your palms."

"Right, well these gauntlets collect my sweat overtime and the sweat from my palms already packs a nasty punch, so what would happen if a large concentration of it went off."

Bakugo then aimed the glowing gauntlet at Midoriya. Back in the monitoring room some of his fellow classmates began to panic.

"No way, is he really going set that off?"

"Is he trying to kill Midoriya?"

"Sir, you have to stop this."

One of the students pleaded with All Might. All Might was hesitant in stopping the fight though. Because he wanted the students to go all out so they have an understanding on how destructive their quirks are, but also because he wanted Midoriya to overcome this obstacle and grow past his fear of Bakugo.

"Bring it on Kacchan!" Midoriya shouted as he clenched his fist.

This only further infuriated Bakugo as his grin grew.

"DIE!" He shouted as he pulled the pin in his gauntlet.

Soon a large explosion was released from his gauntlet and engulfed the hallway. The force of which caused the building to shake startling both Uraraka and Iida.

"What the!?" Iida said as he activated the communication device in his ear. "Bakugo what happened?"

"Shut it four eyes, I'm busy here!" Bakugo shouted back.

"Midoriya are you okay? Midoriya!?" Uraraka tried calling on her ear piece but received no answer.

The rest of the class in the monitor room stood in silence believing Bakugo had in fact killed Midoriya. Until one of them pointed out something in the corner of the screen. It was Midoriya, he had avoided the blast by taking cover in an adjacent hallway. As he got up Bakugo could only scowl at how difficult it was to defeat Midoriya.

"Your aim was off Kacchan."

"Deku."

Bakugo growled as he charged at Midoriya with his right arm pulled back. Midoriya prepared a counter, but the attack was a feint as Bakugo aimed his right hand downward. The resulting explosion sent him over Midoriya, avoiding the attack and giving him an opening. Bakugo launched an explosion at Midoriya's back sending him to the ground. As Bakugo walked towards Midoriya, Midoriya tried to kick out Bakugo's legs. But Bakugo had jumped and avoided the attack.

"Nice try you damn ner..." Bakugo was interrupted as Midoriya had corrected himself and launched a donkey kick into Bakugo's gut.

As both boys were on their knees panting heavily All Might started speaking through the intercoms.

"Two minutes left!"

With that Bakugo was even more determined to defeat Midoriya before time ran out. He charged at Midoriya, but Midoriya had caught his arm. Bakugo then swung his other hand but Midoriya caught it as well. Midoriya made sure to aim the palms away from himself so Bakugo couldn't blow him up. The boys were stuck in a stalemate for fifteen seconds when Midoriya charged One-For-All into his legs and launched them at the ceiling. Bakugo noticed that he would hit the ceiling and used his quirk to change their positions. But Midoriya had gone with the momentum and the boys were spinning rapidly as they crashed through the ceiling.

"Midoriya!" Uraraka called out through the headset.

"Yeah Uraraka?"

"We only have a minute and a half left and I can't get the bomb."

"where are you located?"

"On the fourth floor."

That's when Midoriya had an idea.

"Uraraka, can you get Iida to move the bomb again?"

"Yeah, hang on."

Uraraka then charged towards Iida again and again Iida moved the bomb before Uraraka could reach it. But this was what Midoriya wanted as he heard the scraping of the bomb right above him.

"Okay Uraraka, wait for my signal and then make a move for the bomb."

"Okay, what's the signal?"

"Trust me, you'll know it when you see it."

Both Midoriya and Bakugo got up and faced each other when Midoriya put his plan into action.

"Come on Kacchan. I thought you wanted to be the strongest, not win by technicalities and timeouts." Midoriya provoked Bakugo.

This worked as Bakugo charged with the other charged gauntlet. At the last second Midoriya ducked and kicked the gauntlet up causing Bakugo to blow up the ceiling above them. With Uraraka and Iida, Uraraka was waiting when Iida was suddenly blown away with an explosion from below. Taking her chance she leapt at the bomb and clung on to it.

"I got it!"

"The hero team wins!" All Might shouted on the intercoms. "And with five seconds to spare."

"Man, talk about close." Kaminari stated.

"Yeah, but the way Midoriya managed to turn things around at the last second. Talk about manly." Kirishima said.

"He may be a good planner, but it was obvious Bakugo had the advantage the whole time. I guess Midoriya's quirk isn't so strong after all." Mineta, a boy with purple balls on his head, said.

"What do you mean? He destroyed that giant zero point robot during the entrance exam, plus he managed to get great scores on all the fitness tests before. Of course he has a strong quirk." Sero, a boy with weird elbows, said.

"Then why didn't he really use it?" Ojiro asked.

"Probably because he doesn't have as much combat experience compared to Bakugo. Remember, Bakugo did score the highest points combat wise." Asui answered.

Back at the battle ground. Uraraka was checking on Iida after the battle too see if he was alright.

"You okay Iida?" She asked.

"Yes, my costume absorbed most of the impact thankfully. Though I must commend Midoriya for using my partners own explosions against me." Iida stated as he got up and dusted himself off.

Back with Midoriya and Bakugo, Midoriya was getting up while Bakugo stood in silence at his defeat.

"Sorry Kacchan, but this was the only way I had at winning, given the current situation."

"Good work you two." All Might said as he entered the room He then gave Midoriya a note. "Here Midoriya, go see Recovery Girl about your burns."

"Right." Midoriya took the note and left.

Meanwhile Bakugo was having a mental breakdown.

"Damn it, I lost. And he said this was his only chance given the situation. Does that mean if we went all out. If there was no bomb or time limit to distract us, then I would have... would have!" Bakugo was broken out of his thoughts when All Might placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Whoa, cool your jets young Bakugo. You can still grow from defeat, if you are willing to learn. Now let's go review your battle."

At the monitoring room, and after Midoriya got back, All Might finished the review of the battle.

"All right young heroes, now for the MVP of the fight. It is, young Iida."

This caught everyone by surprise.

"Shouldn't the MVP be one of the heroes?" Kirishima asked.

"Good question, can someone answer why I didn't choose one of the heroes?"

That is when Momo Yaoyorozu, a girl with long black hair in a ponytail and a red outfit with lots of exposed skin, as it lets her quirk, creation, work best, spoke up.

"Yes sir, it is because Iida truly embraced this challenge. He was the only one who truly adapted to his assigned role. As you pointed out Bakugo let a personal grudge get in the way of protecting his objective and caused extensive damage that could have set off the bomb. Meanwhile Uraraka let Iida's acting get the better of her and revealed her position. If she had kept quiet she could have ended the test early. And while Midoriya's plan succeeded he took full advantage of the fact that this was a controlled test and the bomb was fake. In the real world a maneuver like that would be extremely reckless as he could have set off the bomb."

The rest of the class clapped at her evaluation while Iida was crying tears of joy that he excelled in his role.

"Clever girl, but she could have left me something to say. She stole all my thunder." All Might thought.

"Yes, well you missed a point here or there, but otherwise you are correct. Great evaluation Yaoyorozu."

"Of course sir, after all knowledge is power."

After that the rest of the fights were fairly uneventful except for one. Shoto Todoroki, a boy whose power is to shoot ice from the right side of his body and flames from his left, ended the fight in less than two minutes due to freezing the whole building. After seeing this display of power Bakugo grew even more infuriated with his defeat. Midoriya had noticed and wanted to say something, but didn't know what to tell Bakugo. After the class was over all the students changed out of their hero outfits and were ready to head home. Midoriya was roaming the halls looking for Bakugo when he ran into All Might.

"Why hello there young Midoriya. Tell me, have you seen young Bakugo by any chance. He seems to be taking his defeat earlier today rather hard and I wanted to give him some words of encouragement."

"Yeah me too, but I can't find him. I guess he's already gone home."

"I see, don't worry too much about it Midoriya. His files indicate that he's been strong since childhood correct?"

"Yes, thanks to his quirk he's been the strongest kid in class all through junior high. Even the some of the teachers were scared to get on his bad side."

"Now he's learning that he was a big fish in a small pond. There is always someone out there who is stronger."

"Really sir, even stronger than you."

"Yes, there have been plenty of times where I had to use my head instead of my muscles to overcome an enemy. Still, I wouldn't worry about young Bakugo. While his attitude could use some work he has the right mentality for a hero. He never gives up. Remember young Midoriya, in the world of heroes there is a difference between those who settle and those who aim for the top. Young Bakugo has already taken that knowledge to heart and so must you young Midoriya."

"Yes sir!"

With that Midoriya took off home with renewed confidence.
