"What is this?"
Nami was not easily rattled, but the sudden appearance of a neatly wrapped package in her hand did make her raise a surprised eyebrow.
"A gift."
"Yes, I guessed as much from the bow and the paper," Nami said, holding the small package up for emphasis. "But why is it in my hands?"
"Because it's a gift."
"Why are you giving me a gift?"
Law merely levelled an impassive stare at her. "Because it's the sixth of December."
Nami took a deep breath, counted to four, and let the air out at a measured pace. It didn't do to rip your partner's head of too early in the morning. It tended to sour the mood somewhat. "Honeybuns," she said, uncaring for Law's displeased look at the detested nickname, "I know the date. I can see you have given me a very nicely wrapped gift. The question is still 'why'."
"Because you hide your shoes too well."
"Come again?"
"Because," Law said in measured tones, "You. Hide. Your. Shoes. Too. Well."
"Last time I left my shoes unattended, Luffy swapped them for a pair of potted plants and refused to tell me where he put them," Nami said, still staring at the small package in her hands. The earthy hue of the paper contrasted beautifully against the white twine carefully wrapped around the box, locking itself in place and finishing off with a bow. A cautious shake made the box rattle slightly, like small balls were rolling around inside.
Law sank down beside her, stretching his long legs and lacing his fingers behind his head as he leaned against the wall. Nami started to carefully unwrap the present, pulling at the twine in measured movements. The folds of the paper locked itself in place and it took her a moment to figure out how to pull it apart without tearing it all asunder.
A delighted gasp made Law smile when the contents peeked out between the papery folds and then a small red box of chocolates, small enough to fit in a medium-sized pocket, lay revealed.
"Thank you! I was thinking of getting them myself, but then Zoro had to cut down that tower and it all got confusing," Nami squealed and threw her arms around Law. Fresh notes of citrus enveloped him as her hair filled his vision and he patted her arm awkwardly.
"I saw how you looked at them," he said when she released him and turned the box to look at the contents in detail. "And since we've had too much Krampus this year, I wanted Sankt Nikolaus to bring you something nice."
"You have to explain Krampus later," Nami said distractedly as she opened the box, peering at the contents. "But I thought Nikolaus just brought general yule tidings, not presents."
"That's why I wanted to find your boots," Law admitted, wrapping an arm around Nami as she chose a small truffle, closing her eyes in rapture as she popped the chocolate in her mouth. "Traditionally Nikolaus-gifts are left in shoes."
"I'll leave them out next year."
