Thanks to anonymous 1 and 2 on tumblr, as well as Minimini123 on AO3 for the prompts that had to do with snow and holding hands! Hope you enjoy :)
Snowflakes twirled in the air, buffeted by unseen air currents in their slow descent. The white dots painted fleeting arcs against the grey sky, overcast and heavy, before melting against the sluggish sea below.
Nami leaned against the railing of the Thousand Sunny, keeping half an eye on the Log Pose and another on Franky. He had gone on a bit too energetically about the upgrades to the steering system he and Jinbei had concocted, as well as some sort of snow maintenance system, and a certain wariness had crept over her when she had seen the bill for his latest order of cola.
The sea rolled on in hypnotic dips and swells, buffeted by a slow and steady northern wind. She had already had to adjust course twice, once for a hidden reef and another when Luffy wanted to steer them straight into a current. It was only her keen eyes that had noticed the danger before it was too late, miniature changes in the rippling pattern of water alerting her to both danger and hope.
But for the moment all was well.
The day was calm and sky white, the first snow of the year gathering in the grass on the deck. They must be nearing a winter island, and a big one at that, if the size of its climate sphere was anything to judge by. The mornings had become gradually colder for the past few days, painting the grass and windows with hoarfrost and fleeting fractals.
And now the first snow was here.
Nami closed her eyes and huddled into her parka as she felt the slow creep of chill in her fingers. She should go and get her gloves, but she wanted to savour the first few moments of winter. They would be gone soon enough.
A movement, half-hidden by the swells made her signal to Franky and Robin, stationed at the helm. Three, four, five tense heartbeats passed and then the gigantic green fin of a sea king broke the surface before disappearing back into the abyss.
"Feeling on edge?" Robin asked, joining Nami at the railing.
"Just enjoying the weather," Nami answered with a contented sigh. "There's something magical about snow."
"You didn't spend two years covered in it," Robin said dryly, buffing up her own, considerably thicker coat around her. "I'm always freezing when we get to winter islands."
"That just means you need better clothes," Nami said with a cheeky grin. "I'm fine!"
"Are you sure?" The doubt in Robin's voice was thick enough to spread on toast. "Your fingers are blue."
Nami looked at her hands, flexing aforementioned digits. "You're right, I need to go get my gloves."
But before she could turn her back to the sea, another movement below the depths captured her attention. A moment of suspense and then a cheer could be heard from the mast, where their captain was on lookout.
"You know you can't help but smile when you see him?" Robin said with a gentle smile as a yellow hull broke through the waves, the Polar Tang rising to the surface. Nami felt her cheeks heat up at the comment, but that didn't stop her from waving from the railing as the Hearts appeared on deck, waving back.
Suddenly the sky darkened in colour as a blue dome opened up and then Law was there, just within reach. Nami threw her arms around the rival pirate, sinking into the warmth radiating from him. And then he lifted her jaw and stole her breath away with a kiss.
"You came," she murmured against his mouth.
"I promised you'd see me again when the first snow falls," he said, pressing another quick peck to her lips.
Behind them, the rest of the Hearts had clambered on board and Luffy's shouts for Sanji to prepare a banquet grew in volume with each pirate that appeared over the railing. Law shook his head at the commotion and brushed a lock of hair from Nami's shoulder, his hand cradling her neck.
"Miss me?"
Nami could but smile up at the tall man, leaning back in his embrace. Snowflakes dotted his dark overcoat, resembling a starry sky. The steel blue sky behind promised more snow and the noises behind her a long evening ahead.
"Of course."
Her momentary lapse of honesty was rewarded by a delighted smile and another quick kiss. She stepped away and dropped her hands to his, skin meeting skin.
"Your hands are freezing!" Law said, wrapping her small hands in his larger ones. Nami enjoyed his touch and tried to focus on the presence of her favourite rival pirate, ignoring the noises of how somewhere behind them Usopp challenged Penguin to a snowball fight by throwing a snowball in his face. The attack was seen as a foul play and so Penguin returned fire by bombarding Usopp with his own, hastily scooped missile. Unfortunately, one hit Franky who just happened to have perfected his Snowball-O-Matic and thus the snow fight was on.
"Thank you for warming them," Nami said cheerfully, slipping her hands under Law's lovely, thick winter coat and ignoring the yelp of shock as her icy fingers first came into contact with his warm stomach.
Luffy's gleefull laughter filled the air as he joined the fray. The snowfall had increased as the day grew older, promising a blanket of white latter on and a lot of fresh ammunition at the moment.
"I do this under protest," Law grumbled as he pressed her hands against himself, a shiver racking through him. "You are a cold, cold woman."
"And yet you do it," Nami hummed, flexing her thawing fingers in the cocoon of heat enveloping them.
"There are a lot of things I'd do for you, but this is on the very edge."
"Well, if you want to show me, I have a list…" Nami said, wiggling her eyebrows.
"Just let me-"
But Nami never found out what Law was going to let her do, his sentence cut of by a cry of "LOOK OUT!"
The warning was a heartbeat too late and the loose snowball knocked Law's hat clean off, simultaneously drenching him in snow. Nami couldn't help the giggle that escaped her at his look of utter shock and the lovely, snowcovered bedhead she was greeted with. Snowflakes quickly gathered in his now dappled hair and Nami was close enough to count them as they nestled in his eyelashes for a fleeting moment.
"Ready to join the fray?" she asked through her laughter, stepping away from his embrace to let him brush the snow off.
Golden eyes narrowed and Nami's heart skipped a beat when she recognised the determination set in the lines of his face.
"I'll show you how ready I am."
And then she got a faceful of snow.
Prompts and reviews welcome!
