I woke up on a beach, as I tried to move, all I felt was pain. I had to get out of the water before I ended up back in it. I was used to pain, so I started to lift myself, but my arms had no strength. Soon enough I heard yelling, I could barely concentrate on it, I just wanted to sleep.
The next time I awoke, it was in a hospital bed. I'd rarely ever been to one, but I already hated it, the air felt stale. I don't know where I am or who found me, but like I'd been taught, I needed to keep calm and observe. It felt like a while before someone entered the room, they looked like they worked here, maybe a nurse. Their eyes grew wide when they saw me sitting up staring at them before they bolted from the room. Within minutes the woman was back with two men. One had a white coat on, I assume they were a doctor. The other had on a trench coat of some kind. They were both just as shocked as the nurse upon seeing me but quickly schooled their features before coming closer. The doctor introduced himself and started asking me questions about how I felt. He mentioned that they didn't expect me to be awake so soon.
"Your wounds were quite severe, and you are malnourished"
"What wounds did I have" I was curious what they'd done to me now.
"Aside from the bruising, you had a near life threatening hole through your chest!"
I kept quiet upon hearing that, my mind rushing to the last thing I remember -
Flashback ~
My day has been the usual: eat too little, sleep too little and train too much. He said we always had to be prepared, that they would be coming to defeat us. I used to be a believer until I met people from the outside by accident. Now, I was just biding my time until I could sneak out, or even fight my way out. We were just sparing, though we never held back. I'd been saving my meager supply of food for when I ran away. I'd been more tired than usual that day, I let my guard down, and couldn't attack as quickly. He must have thought I was a goner, maybe threw me in the ocean, it had happened before…
End flashback ~
The doctor finished before explaining that the other man was detective Tsukauchi, and he wanted to ask me a few questions. I told the doctor that it was fine before he and the nurse left us alone.
"Hello, I'm detective Tsukauchi. I understand you're still healing but I'd like to ask you a few questions. My quirk is lie detector so please be honest. First, what is your name?"
"Asuka"
"And your family name?"
"Just Asuka"
Tsukauchi paused slightly at that, she was telling the truth, she only had a first name.
"Okay, Asuka, do you know where you are?"
"No"
"Do you know how you ended up here?"
"No"
"Do you know how you were injured?"
She paused before answering; "I don't think so."
His quirk couldn't decide if it was a lie or not, which usually meant it was a little of both.
"You're currently in Mustafa general hospital, some civilians found you on a beach and brought you here, you've been asleep for 2 days. Now, is there anyone I can call, parents? A guardian?"
"No, there's no one."
She was telling the truth. He bid her goodnight before heading back to the station, she had to exist somewhere.
Tsukauchi couldn't find anything. There were no records of this girl anywhere in Japan. No birth records that matched, no missing persons cases, nothing. He submitted what he had, they'd have to work on getting some type of ID for her for now, and a home. He didn't even know what her quirk was.
He returned to the hospital the next morning, Asuka was awake and staring at the tv, watching news reports of a recent villain fight. Besides the obvious injuries and malnourishment, someone had been looking after her. Her pitch black hair was neatly trimmed just past her shoulders and bangs shaped her face, she looked naturally lithe, and a little tall for her supposed age, he guessed around 14.
"Hello, good morning Asuka, hope you're feeling a bit better. I just need to follow up with some questions, then we can discuss what will happen next."
She turned to meet the detective's gaze, interested to know what he had planned.
"I couldn't find any type of records, and I searched everywhere. Do you have any idea why? Anything is useful."
She peppered lies and truths together, it seemed to work yesterday; "I don't remember much, I wasn't around other people often, I think I was kept indoors most of the time. I'm not even sure I was in Japan."
He suspected there was more to the story but had to believe her for now, maybe just some confusion or mild amnesia.
"So, we'll have to get some papers made for you, then we can work on finding you a home for now..
She kept her face calm, but inside was freaking out. She didn't need someone to look after her, she'd been doing it by herself for a while now. She didn't want that level of scrutiny. She balked at the thought of being treated like a child, she never really had been one anyways.
.. oh yeah, for the paperwork, what's your age and quirk?"
She couldn't let them know, she knew it was powerful, she'd always been told such, it's why she was who she was. So, since it kept working, a truthful lie it was.
"Uhm, I think I'll be 15 soon? And I can produce a small light, like a flashlight."
She seemed unsure, but maybe she never really had a chance to know. Age seemed right and a standard simple quirk.
"Okay, I'll go start on the paperwork. Someone will be in here soon to talk about the next steps for your placement. Rest up, everything will work for the better now."
The detective left with a slight hopeful smile. Asuka kept a peaceful face until he left before she could start freaking out. She had to leave, before they could find out more, before they could try and stop her. She grabbed the sweats they had left for her upon her impending release. Going to the window, she was on the 6th floor. She couldn't risk the hallways, so to the window it was.
She hadn't been completely lying, her quirk COULD produce a small light, but it could also do a lot more. Her true quirk was light manipulation. She had discovered many uses for something so vague . One being, her most used ability, Light Travel. As long as the location was within sight, she could move there as fast as light. She'd trained extensively how to use it for fighting and travel.
She pulled the hood on her sweater up and slipped on a face mask she'd snagged. You could only make out her dark, catlike eyes if you looked. Within seconds she had zapped onto the ground. She took off through the small encampment of trees until she reached a busy city street. She wasn't used to a busy street in the daytime but could keep it together for now. She stuck to the shadows. Doing a little pick pocketing when she could, she needed money. Not having time to see how much she had, she kept walking until the area was less cheerful, and she started seeing more abandoned than inhabited buildings. She could find somewhere around here for now.
Tsukauchi received a frantic call from the hospital only an hour after he left, he wasn't planning to go back till later with the new paperwork and a goodbye. Apparently Asuka was nowhere to be found and they had no idea how she left. She wasn't on any of the security cameras. He put together a missing persons report for the newly discovered girl. She had some type of amnesia, it couldn't be safe on her own. They didn't have a chance for a picture yet so hopefully the description would do. He sent it off to the other local agencies and hero's to be on the lookout. Hopefully they didn't lose her again.
Asuka started to settle into her new life, her main focus on recovery and money, mainly for food. She had to eat a ton but it never stayed. Something to do with her quirk keeping her thin she supposed. She only went out at night at first, trying to only steal from criminals, shutting down drug deals or robbery's and taking all their money herself. She was able to get a few new pieces of clothes and blankets, but mostly used it for food. After she had settled in, and scored a particularly fruitful load, she started exploring in the daytime as well. She spent a lot of time at the library and pc cafes. Learning more about the world than she'd ever been allowed to before. Life went on like this for a few weeks before something finally happened, and frankly, she's surprised it didn't happen sooner, she was prone to boredom.
She had just finished her semi weekly food shopping and was heading back to eat when the street shook. A large man with bull horns was stomping down the street with what looked like bags of money. People started running in her direction, and another stomp of the bill man's foot shook the street. Through all this, somehow her grocery bags had become slashed and food spilled to the ground. She hadn't thought to start fleeing, but now she was frozen. Her food, her delicious food was ruined, and she'd been so looking forward to it. The bull man was getting closer, laughing like an idiot because he believed he'd gotten away and was now showboating.
"Haha those stinking hero's lost me, ahh I'm gonna party tonight…."
He looked down, in front of his path, was a teen girl, standing in fear probably, with some spilled food around her.
"Heh so scared of the great Johnny bull, run along little girl, you're in my way."
She didn't look up, still staring at the ground. The bull man was sneering at her, thinking she was scared.
"You ruined my food, please compensate me for it."
"Hahah a real jokester, I was being nice since I'm so happy but move or I'll make you!"
"Tch, I just want to eat, but now you want to cause problems."
She brought her hand up, and formed a gun with her fingers. Before he realized what happened, a bullet of light shot from her hand and went straight through one of his horns. Blowing the bull man back onto his back. The people still left where silent, someone had even taken out their phone, recording as soon as the bull started to confront the teen. They couldn't believe someone so small had such power. The bull man started to stand, furious this girl had managed to do that to him.
"Okay, I'm done being nice girlie."
Stomping his feet, causing the ground to tremble, the bull man put his remaining horn forward and started to charge. Asuka didn't even flinch. Already wanting to leave, she flashed forward and punched him in the face, sending him flying across the street.
"I've spent enough time dealing with this today, I'm leaving." She crouched in front of him and took a few bills from the money sack before flashing away.
Minutes later police and a hero arrived, but Asuka had vanished. The people left gave reports of a teen girl and the tremendous speed, taking down the much larger man. The person who had taken the video even offered to send it to the police to see what they could do with it. They also posted it to a thread of villain takedowns, unbeknownst to Asuka. The video was a hit, and quickly went viral. People all wanted to know who the future hero was and because it was the daytime, she hadn't bothered covering up, so her face was for all to see.
Asuka was annoyed, she was able to make another food stop, but now she was cranky from not eating. On her way to her home, she sent erratic light blasts at the other abandoned buildings, trying to get rid of the frustration.
Tsukauchi was shocked at what he was seeing. The girl he lost, was found, and doing quite well for herself based on how much healthier she looked. The bigger issue is she's alone and fighting villains illegally. And either she just figured it out or she misled him about how powerful her quirk is.
