This chapter is going to be the current ending to the Gotham arc and also the start of Richard meeting the YJL. We have decided to also post this fic and another fic on Wattpad as well. We hope you enjoy this chapter and story.
We don't own anything; if we did life would have been much more entertaining.
Chapter 5
It was a nice night, not too hot and not too cold but just a nice and gloomy Gotham night in early spring, "HUD on" I said and scanned the HUD inside of my mask that showed the time and wind direction, not that it mattered with what I was going to be using to shoot. My rail sniper which Master got for me two years ago, "You need something that you can use to go along with that brain of yours" he had said. The thing had broken both my arm and clavicle the first time I shot it and hurt like hell after I got used to its kick, but now I didn't feel it at all and could fire multiple times before feeling the painful bite of my dear old "SCYTHE" which I had named it after Master joked that I was going to become the grim reaper because of how efficiently I had handled it.
I check the time, "One hour before the clown shows" I shrug my left shoulder because the pauldron that carried three small drones the size of both my fists together made me stiff because it was large and heavy, though the heavy part didn't bother me, "Zeta, W, X, Y set to scout and alert" the three drones softly shot from my shoulder and flew off just as silently while they quickly disappeared into the night sky safe from prying eyes because of their optical camouflage, "I need a proper cloak for them" I mused before returning my focus to the HUD content to waste some time until my targets showed since the drones will alert me if anyone got near me.
"Zeta, link programs Blaze and Awe to my shot" the beep made me smile, "I need to give you a voice soon too, or teach you to talk like R2" I scanned the news line at the bottom of my mask and saw that an ambassador was killed in some country I hadn't heard about yet, "Master seems to be finished" once again only the silence of the gloomy Gotham night responded, "Definitely need to get Zeta a voice or add some music to the mask" it would at least help with my boredom when Master isn't here to chat with.
I spent the time reading a book on cybernetics for forty minutes when my drones alerted me that someone was close, a picture of the Joker getting out of a car on the other side of the warehouse showed on my masks HUD. They tagged him with their heat sensors and then went back to their programmed orders of scouting the area; I knew he would be along soon enough because Batman found him all on his own… nope he found him because I had hacked his computer while he was busy with his little pet upstairs, he really should have had better cyber security because it was way to easy to peel back every layer of secrets he had on that thing. He even got me an in into the Leagues computers, and now I will always be one step ahead of them because I own their systems and they will never know until I have Zeta take control. Ok so I can see why my sisters might find me scary sometimes, but as my Master always says, "The more you know the harder you are to kill" and I took it to heart. Does it make me scary? Yes it does, do I care? No not really because fear is power in my line of work.
Another alert told me that Batman had arrived, a picture of him landing on the roof of the warehouse showed on my HUD, "Excellent. Zeta, begin mission Fame" the beep sounded and I watched as my three drones moved into position on my HUD, the notification popped up saying they were in position and that their MAG rings were deployed.
When Master gave me a railgun I just had to tinker and make something that went along with it, so I put MAG rings on WXY so that I can fire from really far away or even a different direction. I lined SCYTHE up with W who was visible now, I aimed at the glowing blue ring below it and made a mental note to get rid of the glow on the inside of the rings so that no one can notice it someday. My heart steadied as I listened and watched the video feed from the camera in the building which Zeta brought up because Fame began.
Joker was standing above the vat of acid I had found inside the warehouse, and if I did hack a few company mails to make sure that it would be filled and ready for tonight then so what. Batman landed on the landing behind Joker who turned towards him and smiled. "Ah Batsy, it seems we are here to meet the same person" Joker said looking smug as he dropped the bat I had used to lure him into position plushy over his shoulder into the acid below them, Batman noticed of course.
"You really were behind all of it then" Batman stated rather then asked as he moved closer to the Joker, I check the time again and saw I had less then twenty minutes before the Kryptonite shipment from Bruce's company departed because of my handy work yet again. "Come now Batsy, I'm not the only one in Gotham who would like to bash both you and the little birds skulls in you know, though I admit that I dream and plot about it a lot more then anyone else" I smirk at myself as Batman lunged at Joker and grabbed him and lift him right into my sight that was trained on Batman's left shoulder, "La revedere (Goodbye)" I said as I squeezed the trigger and fired my shot which sped along and in 1.2 second pierced through Batman's armour which absorbed the most impact and allowed the rail that pierced the Jokers head to be so small that it wouldn't be noticed from the camera.
I smirked as I watched what looked like Batman violently tossing Joker backwards into the vat of acid, "Zeta, WXY lullaby" the command had three drones return to me and also scrubbed my fingerprints from the warehouses systems. My smirk stayed as I heard the loud boom that sounded through the quite night, "Goodbye Wayne Manor" I whispered as I ran across rooftops until I got to the one that would lead me to my bike hidden by some bushes.
"Zeta, track objective Green Glow" my HUD turned on with directions to the location where I will be getting my hands on some new toys soon. Why Master wants an armoured vans worth of kryptonite I didn't know or care since I was just tasked with getting it which meant it wasn't my job to ask the why or what question but just do my job that I was trained to do. I made my way to the location as fast as I could because I knew that Superman was in town and I didn't want him to catch up to me just yet, so I made sure to leave the city in such a state of chaos that it would take the whole League to figure out what was happening, I glance at the time as I take a turn sharper then a normal human would ever dare to, two minute until Awe happened and I needed to get my hands on that van before anyone came to help the city.
The location, a bridge leading out of Gotham came into view, "Zeta, Autopilot, follow the leader" the beep sounded and I felt the bike drive itself straight. The van came up on my right and I grabbed my grappling hook and shot without looking and found my mark with pure skill and years of trained talent alone. Within seconds I am on the roof with my two custom pistols in my hands and my mag boots and enhanced muscles keeping me steady, I aim at the two guards inside and fire at their heated outlines, my custom made AP rounds go through the roof and their skulls where they detonate to leave little to no evidence. The van comes to a stop a few moments later and I make quick work breaking the lock and tossing the guards into traffic before getting in and driving off towards the location the helicopter was waiting to load the cargo and deliver it to Wintergreen at my Masters island base for whatever purpose it will serve him there.
"Zeta, location update sisters" I asked and saw a map appear on my HUD with their location, they were at the airport getting onto their plane by the looks of it, "Zeta, trigger Awe" the beep sounded and I let out a breath knowing that Wayne Enterprises is about to have a very unhappy night. I had left a little something in their servers which would force them to overheat and cause quite the little explosion. Tonight I was the bad guy who more then likely killed several innocents while doing my job, but as I was taught 'nothing matters more then the job' I found solace in the thought that I won't always do jobs that make me out to be the bad guy, after all I did just kill the Joker and saved the lives of everyone he would have killed had he just been sent back to jail by the so called heroes only to break out again and hurt more people.
I risk a glance in the side mirror to make sure the autopilot was working, I found that I was always making sure that a glitch from over use wasn't rearing it ugly head, Zeta was after all still incomplete and prone to some errors. I see my turn come up and took it with little thought to the other drivers on the road which thanks to it being late at night wasn't all that many, the mask still had me in heartless Renegade mindset after all. Master says that I sometimes act like I have different personalities, luckily for us both I didn't because I was just being professional, when the mask is on then I'm working like any other person who dons a suit to work and do what they have to do at their nine to five. Acting differently would help protect my identity as well, for a while at least.
I stop the truck just as the cargo helicopter lands, four soldiers get out and approach me so I get out to greet them as Zeta stops my bike by my door, "Zeta, autopilot off" the bike goes silent when I shut the vans door. "Renegade, sir" the leader of the four says with a nod, "I'll leave you guys to it then. Don't take to long though, Superman is in town and I don't want him or the League finding out we were even here" the soldier nods, "As you say sir, we'll get the cargo loaded and clean up within ten minutes" Master knew how to choose them, all ex military and damn good at their jobs.
Getting on my bike and feeling it start, I take a moment to scan the area just to make sure we were good, "Stay safe" I said before speeding off towards the hill and trees to avoid leaving a trail on the road after the chaos I caused getting here. The day that I didn't have to be afraid of the Leagues heavy hitters couldn't come soon enough, because I didn't have it in me to run and hide like this anymore, not after the years of training that beat that mindset out of me.
Flashback 2 years ago
"You won't always be the strongest, fastest or smartest person" Master began as he swept my legs with his staff, I laid there looking at him, I was beaten and bruised but determined to keep going until I couldn't move anymore like every other day of training. "You must learn to master your strengths and your weaknesses equally or you won't be able to turn the tides of any battle in your favour" I got up and prepared to take his hits again, two batons raised to intercept him.
"Remember Renegade, you will work alone most of the time so you must always strive to be the strongest, the fastest and the smartest. But never forget that if you underestimate your opponent that you lose that battle right at that moment" he attacked and I blocked but he got through and got me in my stomach hard enough to send me to my knees, his staff at my chin to force our eyes to meet. "Never hold back no matter how easy or hard, never give your opponent a chance to think or strike; overwhelm them and finish the fight with deadly precision and without a single thought about what you have to do to move forward and win. Never forget that we are killers Renegade, never forget that this is the path you chose" he said before hitting my head ending the match as darkness took me
Three days After Gotham/Present Time
Looking at the number of crash reports and errors that Zeta built up during my Gotham run was going to give me a headache but what could I do, it needed to be done and it was the only thing other then watching Wayne and Batman getting bashed on the news to do in this place. This small town was boring as hell but it was where Master wanted to meet, but judging from the looks I was getting from people it won't be long before someone shows up to ask the fourteen year old why he was driving a bike, and my fake ID saying I was sixteen might not hold up because I am shorter then the rest of these country giants.
The bell above the old diners door made me look up and thank whoever was listening when I saw my Master walking in and towards me, "Uncle, glad you finally made it. Getting slow in your old age, what would mom and dad say if they knew you where late" I play the part that the people around us would expect us to play and Master caught on. "Perhaps they'll give me more warning before saying that you are coming to stay with me for awhile because of your school trip. Damn though, are you even growing at this point or are you shrinking instead short stack" my eye twitched at his last few words and he smirked at me the bastard.
"Come on Gray, lets go before we hit traffic" he said and I followed the order, our bikes are standing next to each other outside and the sheriff was watching us as we make our way over. "If he stops us I will handle him, the major owes me a few favours" Master said as we walked towards our bikes. Thankfully he didn't do more then give us the stink eye so we mounted our bikes and headed out of town towards the small airfield I know Master wanted us to go to.
When we got there a privet jet was waiting for us, we parked and got off and headed onto the jet and found our seats, "Wintergreen sent someone for our bikes, they should be here in a few minutes" I nodded as I took in the plane and let Zeta have its run of its systems with a few taps on my wrist computer on my left arm. "Behave Renegade, the League of Assassins don't take kindly to snooping" ok, I admit I did not see that coming.
"For the next year or two you will be training with them at their main base, but feel free to finish early; I am expecting you to finish your training before you turn sixteen so you better not let me down apprentice" he always did this, he wants me to keep making him proud and though it is hard as hell to live up to his expectations it is something I like doing; a challenge that I like taking on.
I look at him and smile, "So what will my training entail" there was still a lot he hasn't taught me and I know it's because he didn't want to really hurt me so I had a rough guess as to what I will be learning from the Assassins. "Torture… the first mouth of your training you will be tortured daily so that you can learn what that kind of pain feels like, and how to inflict it on others" I knew it was coming but still my smile wavered. "After getting tortured they will teach you to torture others. After all of that they will strap you in every so often while teaching you their skills to get you used to the pain" yeah this trial might just suck a lot.
"Will I be taking on contracts during my training?" I hoped not since I had a lot to do what with Zeta and acing whatever training was thrown my way. "You might, but I will manage that aspect and try to keep you as the ghost of Gotham as you are being called by the League for as long as possible". "I won't always be a ghost. Sooner or later they will find out you are training someone and they will come after me" he regarded me with his grey eye and sighed.
"Let me worry about that for now, since I have already commissioned some new toys which will help even the playing field until you turn twenty" there he goes again mentioning my twentieth birthday and not telling me what its all about. The part about new toys got my full attention though, "When you say new toys, what kind of new toys are we talking about" he laughed and shook his head. "On a scale that you can measure them on I think they will all rank on the 'Hell yeah' point if I got that right" I snorted trying not to laugh at the way he tried to sound like me with his deep voice.
"Yeah, you got that right" I said with a smirk after composing myself, "Now I can't wait to start this training so that I can get back and play with my new shiny toys" he gave me one of his genuine smiles which only I seemed to get. "This training will try to snuff out what little is left of that boy in you… don't let it, never lose that part of you that can still enjoy life or you will regret it your whole life" his smile was still there so I knew that if he thought that I didn't need to learn whatever I will be learning then he wouldn't be taking me to learn it. "You will see things that will make you question this world, and even life itself but you shouldn't lose yourself to the darkness of this world during your stay with them. Just promise me that and I will won't regret taking you in all those years ago" his smile has faded now and I knew that he was serious. "I will return to you the same person, just with more knowledge Master. I will never let you regret giving me a second chance at life or training me to be like you. I will always remember that day you asked and I accepted with nothing but a smile" and I did smile at him which seemed to put him at ease. The plane started up and the pilot began to speak which brought my nerves to the forefront, "Well, lets get this done with then" I tried to joke as the plane started moving towards the next step in my life as Renegade.
So yeah… torture training is coming but I won't be writing it because in all honesty I just want to get to the part where the story slows down and the real plot begins. Also I have decided to make Richard as old as Wally so that it would all fit in better with my crazy timeline.
