Ghost was watching Soap and Mai's interaction from the other side of the window, thank god it was a one way window. The man observed the girl's movements and body language to assess her "threat levels" of sorts, this was a habit of his. Reading people. Ghost learned the skill from a young age, he didn't have the best of childhoods or the best of fathers, no, his father was a piece of shit who abused him and his brother. In order to protect himself he studied people, studied their intentions and actions, discerning them from being a threat to not being able to hurt a fly. But her? No, such a little creature wouldn't even think of hurting someone for fun.
Ghost listened to every bit of their conversation, waiting until she gave up some important intel that the man believed she was hiding but Johnny wasn't asking the important questions and Ghost was getting frustrated and impatient. The man is normally a very patient person but seeing his friend Johnny lollygagging and taking his sweet time interrogating this girl was not one of his best moments.
"Come on Johnny," Ghost grumbled to himself, "Ask her about the kingpin."
Johnny continued the small talk with Mai, hoping to get her to see that she's safe; asking if she was comfortable or not, apologizing for the awkward first introductions they had and how old she was. Mai wasn't really sure if she was comfortable, if you would even call her situation comfy, but to her in that moment it was better than that hell hole of a place she was cooped up in. She stared down at the table, the curiosity now gone only leaving confusion and fear. How long has it been since she went missing? What month was it? Where was she? Her parents must be worried, her students must be worried. How long has it been?
"Mai?" Johnny's voice broke her from her thoughts, something about his accent just felt so soothing and safe, " 's Everything alright?"
"What's the date?" she frantically asked, pupils wide with fear and clouded with some sliver of hope, "The day, month, and year. Mr. Mohawk- I'm sorry. Mr. Soap, what's the date?"
"Well," he checked his watch, "It's October 7th, 2022, 1:30 AM…"
"Shit…" she sucked in a breath as she cursed to herself, "Where are we?" from the outside Ghost was taken aback by how much she was saying now, just a minute ago this girl was too afraid to even speak! Ghost felt like he misread her, like he miscalculated something, and it scared him. He hated it. He hated how he wanted to ask this girl questions of his own, hated how he wanted her to know his name too and how quickly she had piqued his interest. She looked so helpless and pathetic at this moment, like a lost puppy tossed in the rain.
"Anaheim," Johnny responded calmly, he was trying to bring her back to the present, bring her back to feeling safe, "California. You sure you're alright, lass?"
"I've been stuck in the same place for 2 years…" she mumbled, her body shaking violently as tears threatened to spill from her eyes. She apologized softly before asking Soap to leave, she didn't want to cry in front of a stranger she had just met. In fact, she didn't want to cry over this issue in front of anyone. Johnny nodded silently before getting out of his seat, before he made his way to the door he took the girl's now empty tray.
"I'll give you some time, Mai." Seeing her in this state made him feel guilty, hurt, as if he was a bad person, "I'll have the lady from before, Laswell, wait outside and wait for whenever you're ready." Just as he was about to grab the door handle, Ghost had already started opening the door himself and blocking the smaller man in. Mai froze upon seeing the masked man, his eyes locked onto her small frame as he tried to read her. The only thing he could pick up was fear.
"Ghost?" Johnny blurted, "I got this taken care of." he glared at the taller man, his stare hostile, his dark blue eyes growing colder. Mai curled up in her chair, tears silently falling like raindrops from her face. Ghost glared back at Soap before brushing past him and taking his place in the now vacant seat across the table, propping his feet upon the cold surface of the table he tilted his head in curiosity.
" 'Ello." Ghost chirped, his accent harsher than his partner's. It was rough and gravelly, it felt as if he were trying to get her to erode away, "Now, you already know my associate." he nodded in Soaps direction, Johnny glowered furiously. Soap had a bit of Mai's trust, he was trying to ease her into giving them any information they needed, but Ghost's actions had the girl retreat back into her shell of silence. Johnny was so close to snapping but he controlled himself in fear he would lose that small sliver of Mai's trust.
"Simon." Soap almost growled, "I got this handled. Leave." Ghost sighed and rolled his eyes.
"That's Lieutenant to you, sergeant." The taller man snapped back, "Now then sweetheart, you have information we need."
"LT-"
"You gonna speak or what?" The stress was all too much for her to handle, the tears finally came in waves. Her sobs echoed the room like a ball of despair, she hiccupped as she felt herself shrinking more and more. She felt so helpless. It was too loud inside her head and she wanted everyone to disappear, her thoughts were screaming as her body shook, she didn't want to bring up those memories just yet. No, it was too soon, if she undug those memories from their grave she surely would lose all control.
"Get out…" she sniffled coldly, "Both of you! Out! Now!" She aggressively pointed a shaky finger to the door, tears staining her face as her fear turned to anger.
"She speaks!" Simon cooed, "Look, sweetheart, we aren't gonna leave till you tell us about the kingpin that escaped." Simon knew he shouldn't push her any further but her cries only riled him more, it was sickening of him to be thinking like this, he wanted more. More of her tears, more of her sobs, her pleas, he was ashamed but once he heard her soft crying he wanted nothing more than to see her face completely stained with sadness. He knew it was wrong, knew it was vile, but she was like a toxin- a drug that once he got a hit of it he couldn't stop.
Ghost sighed and softened his gaze, maybe he was being a bit too harsh, he didn't want to scare her away too much where he could never possibly catch up to her. "Let's do this again," he took his feet off the table and adjusted himself in his seat to seem less intimidating, "My name is Ghost."
