Dream On

A Witch From Mercury

Spinoff

Schrodinger's Child

Belmeria sighed to herself as she felt Elan's forehead. Her son had come to her with a ton of problems in the past 16 years, but never something like this. "Well," she said, "Your temperature's normal, no sign of cold of flu symptoms. Do you have a headache, or any stabbing pains?"

"No, I'm fine." He insisted, "Physically, I mean." The boy was acting very strange, looking about his room like he'd just landed on Mars. She knew it was hard, moving to another country, but this was on another level.

"Really?" She said, "No fever, no headaches, no nausea and vomiting, but you think you're dying?"

"No. No. Ms Winston," He said, "I mean... Mom. I don't think I'm dying, I think I'm dead."

The woman stared at him, blankly. "Elan," She said, "I've checked your pulse twice over. You are definitely alive."

"I mean, I guess I am now..." He said, "But I could have sworn I died back there. It all felt so real. I saw it go off. There's no way it didn't hit me! And now, I don't even know what's going on, or..."

The woman stepped forward, taking his hand in her own. "Sweetie..." She said, "I know it can be tough, adjusting to your new life like this, but I'm really starting to worry." She looked in his eyes. The boy looked so confused. "Do you want me to call a psychiatrist? I know it's frowned upon in Japan, but we don't have to tell anybody."

Her son looked down at his hand, as if bewildered by her show of motherly affection. "I'll... I'll be ok." He said, taking a moment to catch his breath.

Bel wasn't stupid though. She knew that when someone (especially a teenager), told her they would be fine, then they were definitely not fine. But, she was also wise enough not to force the issue. If something was troubling her son, she'd have to let him come to her. "Well, if you're ever having trouble, just know you can always talk to me, alright sweetie?" She wrapped her arms around him, and the boy froze stiff. Then he started to tremble. Was he crying? She didn't say anything; she knew it would embarrass him. Instead, she just rubbed over his back, soothing the boy as he embraced her, slowly, cautiously. You'd think he'd never been hugged before.

"Alright, let's get downstairs." She said, as she broke the hug, "I'll make you some breakfast. I'm sure that'll bring you back to life."

Elan smiled sheepishly. "Thanks... M-Mom."

Later that morning, she watched her son leave, to see his friends. She was so proud of the boy. They'd only been in Tokyo a few days, and already he'd found a group of friends.

It was strange, though, He seemed so, confused, just to be told she loved him. Had she said something wrong? It was almost as if he'd forgotten they were family. Oh well. No need to take drastic measures, yet. He was going to be with friends now, and spending time with Suletta never failed to put a smile on his face.

He'd be ok out there.

Elan Winston returned home early that evening. He'd spent the entire day out with his friends. Not that surprising, especially on his birthday, but she couldn't help worrying a little. Thankfully, the boy was in perhaps a better mood than she'd ever seen him in. He'd become so stoic in recent years. To see him come home with such a big smile on his face, it was almost surreal, but also a great relief.

While breakfast had been extremely awkward, dinner was a whole lot better. She'd prepared a special meal: Unagi and beansprouts on rice. Such a meal must have been a little off-putting, at first. Growing up in Wales, the boy probably thought of eel as a slimy, jelly covered mess. Not the most appetising meal. But once Elan tried it, she knew she'd made the right choice. Teriaki sauce dripped down the boy's cheek as he savoured every bite.

Then came the cake: A black forest gateau, covered in dark chocolate icing and black cherries. Already a delicious desert, in its own right. But the best part was the image of the Gundam in its centre. The local baker was a magician when it came to cake art, and the topper she made had perfectly captured the image of his little Gundam toy, soaring among the stars. The look on Elan's face as he ate his birthday meal. It pretty much made her evening.

Later that night, she watched as her son laid in bed. He looked so serene. A far cry from the anxious mess she'd woken up to. She still didn't know what had happened to him that morning, but perhaps it didn't matter now. Her boy was happy, and his mind was at peace once again.

Satisfied, Belmeria Winston kissed her son goodnight, and made her way to bed.

Thank you for checking out my first side story! For those of you who've been following the main story, the next chapter is almost finished, and should be ready by Friday, right on schedule.

I'll also be using some of my free time to work on my profile, and set up some outside links, like a Deviantart page for official artworks, and maybe even a Discord Server.
