October 2002

Henry and Elizabeth both had a hard week and they weren't sure if they could take any more stress. Henry is worrying about writing his first book, while Elizabeth is still dealing with the fallout of 9/11 at work, 13 months later. When they came home to release Mrs. Janie for the night, the minute the door shut, it was like all hell broke loose. The house exploded with such noise that both felt migraine coming on. Emily is crying, Jason is playing with what seemed like extremely loud toys, and Stevie and Alison are arguing at the top of their lungs. They looked at each other and thought "why did we have kids?", at that moment (freaky friday situation similar) an earthquake began. They rushed to get the kids but they couldn't move. After a few seconds the earthquake stopped and suddenly they could move again. They rush to their children, hugging them and each other. Stevie and Alison questioned their parents on why they were so upset. Henry and Elizabeth looked at each other after everyone had calmed down. Elizabeth reminded them of the earthquake, but Stevie was quick to tell them there wasn't an earthquake. Puzzled, the McCord parents guided their kids to the dining room as Henry brought home pizza for dinner.

After dinner, it was time for the little McCords to start their bedtime routine. Baths, feeding, and cuddles were finished as Emily and Jason were asleep in their nursery. Alison was being surrounded by both of her parents as her dad read the Berenstain Bears while Stevie was finishing her shower. Elizabeth wanted to make sure that she and Henry weren't driven crazy by imagining an earthquake so again she asked Alison, yet Alison denies such an incident happened. When they left her room and headed to Stevie's, they decided that maybe Alison was maybe too young to understand so they were hoping their seven almost eight year old would be able to tell them the truth. As they walked in Stevie was already in bed reading James and the Giant Peach, as she saw her parents, she put her book mark in its place and handed her book to Henry to start reading from where she left off. After finishing the chapter, Elizabeth got off Stevie's bed and started to tuck her in for the night. She looked at Henry, gesturing for him to ask Stevie as she hoped being the Stevie whisperer that they would finally get the answer they were looking for but Stevie, replied the same as Alison and stated that her parents are acting weird. They said their goodnights and moved towards their room. They went through their normal bedtime routine being quiet and it seemed like neither wanted to talk about the elephant in the room situation they found themselves in.

After they laid down suddenly all these emotions got the best of Elizabeth, she started to sob and Henry joined her while cuddling her as close as possible. They talked about anything and everything, from how stressed they were to what they were feeling when they couldn't reach their children during the 'earthquake'. They got up to check on their children one more time and as they slowly fell asleep a sense of foreboding settled on them.
