Knock knock knock. Alex and Brian could see a man in an all black suit with a very long trench coat… almost like a robe. He also carried a black umbrella with him, even though it wasn't raining.
"We can do this the easy way or the hard way, Mrs. Smith," he calmly said. "Open the door, please. Mrs. Smith?" No answer. "Alright." He twisted the handle of his umbrella and took out what appeared to be a short, black stick.
Brian and Alex watched him as he said something and opened the once locked door!
"How did he do that?!" Alex said, as she watched the man enter the house before he came across an enraged Josephine.
"GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!" Josephine ordered the man, pointing a gun to his face!
The mysterious, clean shaven man remained calm as he snatched the revolver away from Josephine's hand before opening the chamber.
"Heh. You didn't even load it," he said as he closed the empty chamber and threw it away. "By the way, Mrs. Smith, the No-Maj police will be here soon. I suggest you cooperate with them." He looked at Amy, who was helping her brother up from the floor.
"FOR WHAT?!"
"Child abuse, assault, and extortion. Speaking of children, where's Brian?"
Brian and Alex are looking at the mysterious man from upstairs. Brian decided to cautiously approach the man.
"E-excuse me. I'm Brian."
The man smiled. "Nice to meet you again, kiddo."
"Again? Do I know you from somewhere?"
"Oh, we first met when you were a baby. I'm so sorry I couldn't save your dad…"
"Dad? You knew my dad? But…"
"Oh! Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. Professor Alastor Drake, potions professor and deputy headmaster of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Speaking of which, you have your letter, right? If so, open it!"
"I FORBID YOU TO TELL HIM ANYTHING!" Josephine barked.
"Well, it's a good thing I don't have to listen to you. Wait, you never told him?"
"Told me what?" Brian asked.
"You're a wizard, Brian."
"A-a what?"
"A wizard. And a good one, just like your parents. You just need to learn how to control your abilities. It's time for you to learn the truth. Read the letter, kid."
"I FORBID IT!" Josephine barked!
Alastor glared at Josephine before turning back to Brian. "Sorry about that. Just ignore her."
Brian read the letter:
ILVERMORNY SCHOOL of WITCHCRAFT and WIZARDRY
Established 1627 AD
Headmaster: Agilbert Fontaine
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Senior Delegate, International Confederation of Wizards)
Dear Mr. Bank,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the foremost wizarding school in the Americas.
Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment. Upon receipt of your owl, the MACUSA Office for Magical Relations and Education will contact you with further information regarding wand assignment and travel arrangements.
Term begins on August 27. We expect your owl no later than July 26. We very much look forward to receiving you as part of the next generation of Ilvermorny's Heritage.
Yours sincerely,
Alastor Drake
Deputy Headmaster, Professor of Potions, Representative of the Office for Magical Relations and Education, retired Auror for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement
Questions filled Brian's head, but he couldn't decide what to ask first. Finally, he stammered, "What does it mean, they await my owl?"
"Oh shoot! That reminds me!" Alastor took out a small roll of parchment from his robe… and a pen floated out of it as well!
"What the?!"
"Oh, that was my fountain pen. Gotta write something real quick." He grabbed the pen and took the cap off, revealing its nib. Meanwhile, the parchment just floated in the air. Brian could read what he wrote:
Dear Professor Fontaine,
Brian has received his letter.
Taking him shopping tomorrow.
Weather here's fair. I hope you're doing well.
Professor Alastor Drake
"Sorry about that! Now, where was I?" He placed the cap back on the pen.
"He's not going!" Josephine barked.
"Says who, exactly?"
"Says his legal guardian!"
"Amelia is his mother and his legal guardian, not you. Besides, you've proven that you're not fit to be his guardian. Your attempts at control are based on something that No-Maj society loathes."
"No-Maj?" Brian asked.
"Oh, it's short for no-magic. That's the official term, anyway. Our neighbors across the pond call them 'Muggles'. Heck, that term's so popular that plenty of American witches and wizards call them muggles!"
"When we took him in," Josephine began, "we SWORE that we'd stamp out all of this wizard nonsense!"
"Speak for yourself!" Mike exclaimed.
"You knew?!" said Brian. "You knew that I was a wizard?!"
"YES!" Josephine barked! "I can imagine how much Mikey HATED Amelia. I can imagine that he saw his sister for what she was—a FREAK! Then she disappeared off to that—that school-!"
"That's enough!" Mike barked at Josephine. "I felt no such thing for Amy! Sure, I was disappointed that I couldn't go, but I was happy for her! And to say that her husband DESERVED to get blown up is victim blaming at its finest!"
Brian saw red. "Blown up?! You told me dad died in a car accident!"
"Yeah," Alastor said, trying to calm Brian down, "that was a cover up to protect your and your mother's identities. Sorry about that."
"It was?" Hearing that seemed to calm Brian down a bit.
Alastor nodded. "It's sad, but kinda understandable, that Brian wouldn't know his own story when every kid in our world knows his name."
"HE IS GOING TO RIVER CITY MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HE WILL BE GRATEFUL!" Josephine hissed at Alastor.
"If he wants to go to Ilvermorny, you can't stop him. You're nuts if you think you can! His name was written down in the books ever since he was born. Brian's famous and he'll be quite famous in Ilvermorny! He'll be going to the finest Wizarding school in the Western Hemisphere. Perhaps even the world! And he'll be under the greatest headmaster Ilvermorny has had since Isolt and James Steward: Agilbert Fontaine."
"I AM NOT PAYING FOR SOME CRACKPOT OLD FOOL TEACHING HIM MAGIC TRICKS!" Josephine roared.
But she had gone too far. Alastor took his wand out of his umbrella and pointed it at Josephine. "Never. Insult. Agilbert Fontaine. In front of me. Ever. Again." Alastor's voice was calm, but his eyes SCREAMED fury. This got her to finally shut up. He placed it back into his umbrella.
"Mr. Drake?" Asked Alex. "Can I go to Ilvermorny?"
"NO, SHE MAY NOT." Josephine said.
"No, she's gonna go too. Once she becomes 11, that is." Alastor corrected Josephine. "She's a witch too."
"WHAT?!"
"Yep. Just like her mom, bless her heart." He turned to Brian. "Anyway Brian, I shouldn't have lost my temper back there, but she's lucky I didn't do anything."
"Were you a student?" Brian asked Alastor.
"Yup! Graduated with all A's on my E.A.G.L.E.s and H.A.R.E.s. By the way, we've got a lot to do tomorrow. Amy, you don't mind if I take him shopping, do you?"
"Only if I can come with you!" Amelia stated.
"Then it's settled! First thing tomorrow morning!"
