Not a word was spoken, not a comment said. I didn't want to disturb Lori. She went through enough pain. I'm carrying her on my back. She must be in shock. Her clothes were ripped so I had to loot the clothes off the freshly killed. It was still cold for her, but at least it'll cover her body. I brought back the guns too. It was quite a heavy load for a single person, but I'm going to take it one step at a time. A shotgun, two handguns, and some bullets. It wasn't a bad haul, but the price was too high. I'm sorry Lori. I promise I'll make it up to you.
The moment I arrive at the town gates, I saw Kyle, he was reading a book. I wanted to shout at him, but my voice wouldn't come out. So I tried again, but my throat hurt. Maybe it was because of the fatigue and shock that my voice seem to give up, but I needed to grab his attention. "Kyle-" A loud whisper came out of my mouth. "Kyle!" He heard it. He saw me. His face turned white. It was a blur what happened after, but what I know after the blur faded was that I was sitting beside Lori in a dry long-sleeved office shirt and a pair of army UCP pants. The rain outside stopped. I just sat there, looking at her with nothing on my face except for guilt. Her body was wrapped under a blanket, and bandages were all over her. I couldn't bare to watch her like this, but I need to be strong for her. If she dies... If she dies, I'll be alone. She's like this because of me. Everything was my fault.
I need to get my mind off this. The guns. I got up from my seat and picked the guns I got off those three. The shotgun wasn't really in the best shape, unoiled, and the stock is splintering, but otherwise, it's still in working condition. 15 12 gauge shells. Guess I'll use it. Just as I sat it down. The door knocked, our house is an RV, it isn't really in peak form, but it got us through winters and summers alike. "Come in," I said, my voice barely got out. The door opened, and I saw Kyle. He had sympathy on his face.
"Umm... Luna, we're going to hold a meeting, you should come when you're ready, I'll wait for you outside," He said, glancing his eyes at Lori on the bed. "How is she?"
"I don't know Kyle,"
"Take it easy alright, if you don't want to come, I'll tell the others-"
"No, I'll go," I wanna go through this meeting and find those people's camp, they must have people nearby, they weren't bringing much with them.
When we got to the town center, the whole place was murmuring, everyone had weapons. Assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, submachine guns, perhaps they sent a scout out to check the story, or maybe they were about to send a scouting party. Maybe neither. Fuck it.
"Alright alright, calm the fuck down!" Patrick yelled, he was a national guard officer before this all thing happened, he was the first person that rallied people together in this town. Guess he's still the first person to rally everyone when things happen. "I believe we all know what happened to the Loud sisters, so now we are going to get everyone that can fight here and divide jobs... as a precaution of course. There's going to be a forward team that will go check on the surrounding towns to survey whether or not there are more hostiles that might come and a home team that's going to guard the walls. Those that want to volunteer for the forward team, please go to the gate in 20 minutes, the others, please meet with Sergeant Garcia for further info, thank you!"
I want to go out. No, I need to go out. I jogged back home and opened the closet. I need to change, I can't just go outside in an office shirt. I took out a black hooded jacket and slid it on. I opened Lori's bag and I saw her kevlar gloves, I sighed. "Lori, I'm gonna borrow this," I put it on. I grabbed the handguns I got off those three and shoved the one on my pants circumference and the other in my bag. I grabbed the shotgun and I taped a kitchen knife in front. I don't want to make any more mistakes. I want to kill.
I got to the gates, but I saw that out of the 100 people in the whole town, only five people were there. Patrick, Kyle, Jane, Jake, and me. Jane and Jake, they're twins, just like Lola and Lana. Jake, the slacking asshole, and Jane, the timid one.
"Just the five of us?" Jake asked.
"I guess so, the more's the merrier, but recon and potential gunfight ain't everyone's cup of tea," Kyle said. He had an army helmet on, the same as Patrick. "We're going to Liberty, 'cuz-"
"Why there?" Jake cuts him off, annoyed.
"Luna and her sister got attacked 2 miles away from us, and the nearest town from there is Liberty. It's only natural for us to search there first," Patrick clarified, patting Kyle's shoulder. "We can search the crash site after we search Liberty. If Liberty's clean that is,"
"Whatever, better than shoving shit all day," Jake retorted as if someone pissed on his ego. Unlike him, his sister is pretty timid and more reserved.
"And remember, we are not to engage, we're only going to do some quick recon and report back," Patrick added. "Only engage in self-defense,"
"Yeah, yeah fine!" Jake said annoyed.
We arrived at the outskirts of Liberty, but we saw no one, there were a few zombies bumbling around like morons, but nothing else. We sneaked past them with no issue. We got inside the town, but there wasn't a soul, just the dead. So we walked until we got to the church at the edge of town. Kyle went inside alone, while we waited outside, waiting for his signal. We waited and then suddenly, nonchalantly, Kyle popped his head out.
"Come inside, house empty," Kyle said. "except for this poor bastard,"
I got inside and the first thing I saw was a naked man nailed to the cross. His intestines were hanging out and his head was stuffed snuggly in the hole in his stomach. There was a puddle of blood beneath him.
"What's with the disgusted look?" Jake shoved me, giggling. "Are you afraid my little dyke?"
"Leave her alone, she had enough crap happening to her today," Kyle shoved Jake with his rifle, pushing him to the floor.
"Oh yeah, and so what?" Jake yelled. He got up on his feet and aimed his index finger at me. "If not for this bitch's sister, we won't be out here!"
"ENOUGH!" Patrick punched Jake in the face, making him fall again. "Nobody forced you to come with us, if you're going to be a bitch about it, don't fucking come with us, do you understand?"
Jake looked at the two men, pissed, "Jane, let's go, fuck these assholes," he said before storming off.
Awkwardly, Jane waved her right hand and followed him.
I couldn't care less about what Jake did, I couldn't care enough about that shit, right now, I only want one thing: REVENGE.
"I guess Liberty ain't clean captain," Kyle said.
"You two recognize this guy?" Patrick asked as he took the head out of the stomach cavity.
"No clue, but whoever he is, it is safe to say that we might be fucked," Kyle said.
"No shit," I said.
"No shit," The two of them repeated.
"Since we didn't see anyone on our way here, let's go straight back and warn the town, if we're lucky, the storm won't even touch us,"
"No, I want to hunt them down,' I said, clenching my shotgun hard.
"Luna, you and I know that is an incredibly stupid thing to do," Kyle said, "Never be the one that pokes the beehive, that's what my momma said,"
"THEY RAPED MY SISTER, AM I SUPPOSED TO ACCEPT THAT AND ACT AS IF NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENED?!" I lashed out at him.
"LUNA, LISTEN, FOR NOW, WE DON'T KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY MORE OF THEM, FOR ALL WE KNOW, THOSE THREE THAT YOU KILLED MIGHT'VE DONE THIS!" Kyle yelled, both of his hands on my shoulders as if he were trying to keep a jackhammer still. "Do you understand?"
I wanted to cry, honestly, I fucking wanted to cry, but nothing can come out. They were already red enough. I dropped the shotgun on the floor and sat down on one of the pews lining the church's insides. "...yes... I'm sorry,"
"It's fine, it's alright," Kyle sat next to me.
"Let's go home, it's no use anyway," I said. I wanted vengeance, but there was no one on the receiving end.
