"Merry Christmas, Ayanoköji!"
Kei Karuizawa pulled a package out of her winter jacket. The colourful paper it was covered in was as bright as the gaze on her face. The blonde smiled as she held the gift out to the one it was for - who was staring at it with the same black expression as always.
"Oh?" Kiyotaka Ayanoköji raised an eyebrow. "What's this?!"
"Your present!" Karuizawa winked at him. "But you're not to open it until Christmas Day, okay?"
"Sure." Ayanoköji answered flatly as he took the package. "Whatever you say."
Behind her smile, Karuizawa was a bit annoyed. It was frustrating for her to see that even upon receiving a gift from her, Ayanoköji be as indifferent as ever. This was supposed to be an exciting and happy time of the year. Why was he so as emotionless as ever.
"You didn't have to get me anything," Ayanoköji said. "I mean, I haven't gotten round to getting a gift for you yet-"
"Oh that's okay! You've given me all I could ever want!" Karuizawa chuckled as she waved her hand dismissively. "What more could I ask for than someone who protects me from bullies? All I've wanted is someone to come to rescue me when I'm in trouble - and I now have that in you!"
"Really?" Ayanoköji uttered. "There's nothing you want from me, Karuizawa?"
"Well, there is actually one thing I'd like from you for Christmas…"
"And what's that?"
Karuizawa half-closed her eyes, moving her beaming face towards Ayanoköji's blank stare.
"A smile."
"A smile?" Ayanoköji repeated.
"Yes, Kiyo." Karuizawa spoke in a sweet tone as she fluttered her eyelashes. "Would you please give a smile? For me? For Christmas?"
The girl remained in front of the boy as they stood together in the crisp wintering atmosphere. Snowflakes began to fall from the evening sky. They settled over the grounds of the Advanced Neutering high school - as well as the pair of teenagers.
"Then I'm sorry, Karuizawa, I'm gonna have to disappoint you," Ayanoköji said bluntly. "The one thing I cannot give you for Christmas - is a smile."
Karuizawa's face fell pouted as she pulled away from the person who had refused to grant her Christmas wish. She pouted with a fold of her arms. Snowflakes settled gently onto her cheeks, only to melt away from how red her face was turning.
Jerk! Karuizawa thought grumpily. I can't believe I've fallen for you of all people! If Christmas doesn't make you smile, nothing will!
The end.
